Questions about Tow package.....

Former YJ owner (should have never sold it) looking to buy a 2010 Sahara or loaded up Sport with the Tow package.

Can't find one with the Tow package anywhere. Dealer said they can add it on.

I don't think that's true. How would you have the trailer sway damping and the 4 pin wiring connector if it's added on after it was built?

Opinions?

thank you,

Glenn

I don't know about the trailer sway dampening, but the wiring is a simple plug in connect harness that plugs into the left rear tail light.

I got mine with the tow package. I have this thing about wanting with the purchase. I would check at dealers near you and see what snake oil they are all selling.

Daggos right about the elec. and the actual hitch uses four bolts at the rear bumper, I think all the JK's come with the 4-captive nuts tack welded to the back of the bumper-

It will end up as the same unit, supplied from the assembly of the jeep !!

Actually the nuts are welded to the hitch unit not the frame. There are a couple, I believe Smittybilt is one, that does not come with welded nuts. When installing one of those, it helps if you can get a friend to hold your nuts.

Just remember that if you get an "add on" tow package, you'll still have 3.21 gears. That would be supper doggy if you were towing anything of significance.

I'm getting the Unlimited in automatic (have two other sports cars in stick). I believe the auto comes with 3.73 gears, correct?

Correct me if I'm wrong gang... but I thought the 3.73s were only put in with the factory tow package or special order. All else (besides rubicon's) have the 3.21s.

I've had it added on after the fact by myself. My manual was purchased off the lot with 3.73. There is a difference between optional and special order.

Really? A special order means the only way to get a particular option or combination of options is to place and order and grow old waiting for it to come in.

Options are just that. Things that can be added at the factory or at the dealer. Many dealers order Jeeps with popular options to have in stock. I bought mine off the lot with the 23S package as well as LSD and 3.73 gears. It also had a dealer added dual top option which I had them remove.

Trailer Sway Control is just software, and the dealer can activate/install this as well. I have an '07 that I added the hitch and wiring to myself, but don't have the trailer sway control.

I had the dealer add the tow package but like daggo66 my already had the 3.73 gears, its a 2door manual. And now that you mention it I'm not sure it has the sway bar, I doubt it does I'll have to look.

Although that might make it more enjoyable, how does that help you get the hitch installed?

I have an 09 Unlimited, automatic. I bought the Rugged Ridge hitch for $50 on eBay. Four bolts to install. It was done in under an hour. The wiring was under $20 on Quadratec and it plugs into the drivers side tail light wiring. Under a half hour to install. I don't know about factory gearing or anything, but honestly, I just didn't think of it when I was at the dealer, so I wound up doing it on my own a few months after I'd bought it.

Nobody here has addressed the fact that there is a larger transmission cooler on a factory tow package. Putting an aftermarket cooler certainly makes sense if you're pulling anything over 2000#. While you're at it, install a transmission fluid temp guage and filter.

The cooler would be for an automatic.

You might be better off to ask in the TJ section.
I wish I could help, but I don't know

When I bought mine the only thing it did not have that I wanted was a hitch. I negotiated the hitch install at a ridiculous price because the dealer said the `12 is different because of the exaust placement AND there was some "programing that needed to be done". Really? But after reading this there may actually be something different in the programing?! BTW, it has been 6 weeks and the dealer says it will be 6 more...they have the hitch but the wiring harness is made by Jedi warriors in Endor or something.

The basic tow package is simply the hitch bolted to the rear of the chassis and the plug in wiring loom (ours plugs to the back of the tail lights).

The official tow package had minimum 3.73 gear, the hitch and wiring loom, plus the added programming to the ESP system for the anti trailer sway. Basically it uses the G sensors that the ESP uses to detect the vehicle being pushed side to side by the trailer. It then activates brakes and decreases engine speed in the same manner it does for all other detected abnormalities. Personally I thing people should just be taught how to drive and how to load a trailer before being alowwed to tow one.

I am about to add a hitch and wiring loom to my 13 JKU. Will this cause a check engine light or anything else to come on (due to the added wiring into the CANbus system) also how much should I expect to pay the stealership to "Activate" the towing software?

Holy dinosaur thread batman!!!

The install take about 40 minutes to do yourself, including getting beer. There is nothing that needs to be activated by the dealership on your 13 and the harness is plug an play with the CANBus

If you do this, go ahead and buy the 7 pin harness instead of the 4 pin. It's a little more work to install, but gives you far more options for towing.

Mike
