Exclamation Questions on a jeep for sale urgent

Looking at a 08 JK for sale with 53k miles on it. Its going for around 19k. I had a couple of questions and took to this forum for help with answers. The JK has 35s on it but doesnt look like it has a lift can this lead to any type of problems. Another question is it came from hawaii and has rust inside interior to bolts maybe a little in the under carriage. Took it for a test drive and the 4x4 was not ingaging. If the dealership fixes it is it worth it to make offer.

They had a 4x4 on the lot that wouldn't go into 4x4? Did they even have anyone look at the car when they took possession? I'd be pretty worried, definitely bring it to a mechanic you trust before even considering the purchase

I bought an '08 JK unlimited X auto hardtop (4 door) for my daughter, 55K for 18,500. It was in mint condition, not a scratch, no rust. Must have been garaged winters.

Yoo don't mention 2 dr/4dr, auto, manual, etc, but a new 2 door leftover 2011 base model can be had for a few thousand more. The tcase might be simple, rust - not so much. Need more info, and I'd have an independant inspection. if it's a manual, 2 door, softtop - that's pricey. A 4 door Sahara auto hardtop, might be a fair price. JMHO

yeah 4x4 wouldnt engage but what about the tire size would that cause any type of damage to axles or gears. Its has 35s but no lift I think

Sounds over priced to me.
I'd let my 4 dr unlimited with 31k go for less than that.
I'd do some more looking around.

Speaking of tire size and gears.....

Is this a Rubicon by chance? If not leave it alone. To turn 35s with any kind of meaningfulness will take some gear. The Rubicon has 4.10s. All the other JKs will have either 3.21 or 3.73. Neither of those will do much for 35s, but if you get something with 3.21s it will cost about double to regear it.

X2. I bought a 2010 Unlimited Sport with all the options, manual trans, hardtop and 16k miles on it for $22k. You're talking about a 2 door, 1/2 the options, soft top and 3x the mileage. Now add in the possible issues that you found (and probably more that you haven't) and that makes it overpriced.

Also, if a dealer is willing to put it on the lot without making sure the major selling points of a vehicle are operable, I wouldn't buy ANYTHING from there.

Good point salesman did not even know the 4x4 didnt work, the stick was easy to move around. Never driven a jeep before but did not see any lights indicating it was in 4x4 mode. He then told my wife he was embarrassed because of it. This was no mom and pop dealership. It was a brand name dealership.

What you describe with the 4x4 engaging sounds like the plastic "clip" that is designed to break when someone tries to force the shifter. This is an easy, inexpensive fix. Still doesn't change the fact that this is probably a bad deal.

I used to work at a Dodge dealership until I got too sick of the cheating and games they played. I'm not saying every dealership is shady, but there are plenty out there that are.

Most likely the dealership bought the Jeep at the auction or took it on trade, cleaned it up and parked it out on the lot before it could be properly inspected. If a dealership has a vehicle they know will quickly sell, they will skip steps to get the vehicle in front of the customer. I wouldn't even consider this Jeep. Find another and make sure you get a CARFAX or Accucheck report on it and find out if it came from an auction or it was traded.

Another question I have is how long it has been since it was in Hawaii. If it was shipped out of state to sell, that was a huge expense. The history on this vehicle is important, but unless Elvis is listed on the Carfax there's no way in hell I'd pay $19k for it. The way you describe it I wouldn't pay $15k for it.

I've seen the Jeep Elvis owned...it was pink and white. You wouldn't want it

Keep looking, IMHO.

Compare: 12/10 I had been shopping for a Jeep for nearly a full year.

Bought 08JK Sahara 24G options, 15k miles; absolute mint condition, $21k. Private party.

Advise: learn the local market, prowl around for a while, do a lot of looking and comparing for what YOU want. And there's always a better one for less money out there.

......although it may not show up until the day after you finalize on another 'good deal'....

My personal opinion, is that unless one has decent mechanical knowledge any vehicle that requires an unknown amount of wrenching to get it up to par, isn't what I'm looking for.

YMMV

If it lived on the Islands, it has rust you can't even see yet. I know. My husbands parents live on Maui. And once rust starts to appear, there's lots more that you can't see... and it - like a cancer - grows. Fast. Take heed of everyone's advice..... run away...
