I don't know if I would replace the radion on the JK. At least mine is an infinity radio which is far better than those mentioned here except for the Kenwood which I think is about the same sound quality IMHO. I would try to get the Uconnect adapter. It looks like something that can be done by anyone (Plug and play) I am looking to do the same on my JK, but not willing to give up that nice stereo that came with it. My wife has an Infiniti M35 and she swears to me that my JK's radio has better sound than her BOSE system.

The factory JK systems are pretty blah...and yes, I'm talking about the Infitniy or Alpine versions as well. Also, Infinity does not make any of the factory head units.

2) If you look on the lower right corner of the radio faceplate, you'll see a 3 digit code (I'm going to say it's "RES"). The reason why the dealer couldn't get it to work is because they were using the wrong Mopar kit. If you ask them, they'll most likely say that they were using kit PN 82212159. This kit will not work. They need to order the kit PN 82213221. I can assure you that they don't have this kit on their shelf. This kit comes complete with the harness, mic, module and a small touch pad that contains the Uconnect & voice buttons. This pad is about 1"x1.5" and is dash mounted.
3) I have another thread here that explains this same information,
RES radio / no Uconnect buttons Info
I have the same problem (Sort of) My 2011 JK has buttons on top of the radio. One has a little head with a phone on it or something and when I press it it says U connect not installed or not detected. Is this the radio you mention that does not need the complete kit? Also what's the make of the radio. I could swear it was an infinity radio. At least the subwoofer in the back says infinity. I might be wrong tho. But as far as U connect go I think my radio is U connect ready but just not enabled or the module needed not installed.

^Infinity is just the speakers and maybe the programming of the amp on the premium systems.

I won't argue that. The radio does look Blah... But I sure love the sound especially the Bass.

Well, I'm happy to hear that cause I won't feel any guilt now if I decide to get me another radio. Maybe one with touch screen a Kenwood I love their bluetooth interface.
