Rattle in 3rd Gear

First time post (long time lurker), so go easy on me....

I'm a proud new owner of a 2012 JKU sport with the 6 speed manual.

The truck has about 1500 miles and I recently started to notice a soft rattle from the stick when engaged in 3rd gear. It's intermittent, but when its there, its noticeable.

Does anyone else have this problem? Any idea if this is "normal"....

Also, can the sage forum experts confirm that the transmission is a bit more clunky (for lack of a better term) than transmissions in more sporty cars? More resistance and more of a rubbing feel when changing gears?

I'm used to driving a manual 04 VW GTI and 91 BMW e30, both of which are much more smooth. I assume this is just the nature of the JKU being a truck and not a sports car.

I don't mind the way it feels (it actually feels great), but should I be concerned or bring it to a dealer?

Thanks y'all.

Yes. This tranny is very noisy/clunky.
Some days are better then others IMO.
Cold days

Can you explain "the rattle" more?

Grinding as you shift? Or just driving in 3rd
gear it makes a noise?

Thanks for confirmation re the tranny. No problem.

As for the rattle issue, there is nothing grinding but rather when fully engaged in 3rd, I have a metal on metal-like soft and quick rattle noise coming from the shifter.

I wonder if the reverberations in the stick from bumpy roads are causing the stick to bounce against a tranny component?

Shifter does bounce around in the jeep. I myself have not heard any noises though.

Yup. Some days my shifter bounces all over the place and perhaps rattles a little bit. I would say yours is acting completely normal.

Irish17,

Congratulations! The noise / vibration you are experiencing in 3rd gear is common to quite a few of our "trucks". It is affectionately referred to as "Wrangler Rattle".

As far as the transmission overall goes, it is definitely a "truck" transmission. It likes slow and precisely executed shifting on your part. If you double clutch, it will just love you. It is definitely not a Getrag 420G, Trmec Tr6060 or an Aisin AR5 which just about demand to be shifted extremely aggressively.

This is common in the JK NSG tranny, usually heard in the 3-4 gate.

Is there a certain rpm range?

this is great hahaha

I've been-for the longest time wondering what this noise was. Well it appears I myself do have "the wrangler rattle"
Reason why I asked "what rpm range" is because I can only hear it at around 2000 when the engine is quiter.
3rd and forth it's there, comes from the shifter.
I never really put much thought or effort looking for the source.

I get somewhat of a rattle as well, but mine appears to come from underneath the truck, regardless of the gear - in between 2800 to 3000 rpm. Is this normal as well? I thought it might be the cat convt cover but was unable to reproduce the noise when I was under the truck checking around...

The shift lever can act like an amplifier from the transmission especially if you rest your hand on it. That's just the normal noise from the gears, shafts and bearings spinning around.

No, it won't shift like a sports car. It's gonna shift like the truck that it is. Enjoy it, it-is-what-it-is.

Mine started doing that too, only it wasn't nothing! Mine was the CV joint on the front drive shaft where is goes into the Tcase giving out! Happy times! I have an appt with the dealership to see if they are going to cover it.

I agree... it certainly wont shift like a sports car, but thats what makes it a JEEP! You actually feel like you're "driving" a Jeep, and thats what makes it different, and enjoying.

@av8er50 - how exactly would you describe your noise, and did it occur at certain speeds/rpm's, or always?

The noise is also exasperated by the stock plastic shift knob. Shortly after picking up my 12 I ready all the shifter and rattle threads and threw a rocknob on mine. For the next month or so it was great and now i think the rocknob needs to be clamped down a bit hard as the noise came back. Either that or I'm going to jam a baseball on it like some other members here. Enjoy the Jeep!

Mine does it as well. I noticed that while driving in 3rd or 4th when I hear the rattle if I apply a little side pressure to the shifter the noise goes away...hmmm. Figured it was normal, good to hear that all I need to do is get used to it.

Well had my appointment today at the dealership and they are replacing my driveshafts. Both front and rear free of charge. Due to be done next Thursday, I will compare after its done to see if said noise is gone. Also told me I have a leak on my intake manifold, that's getting fixed at the same time. Thankful for the lifetime power train warranty right now!!

Well, an update. Repairs done to my drive shafts and the "rattle" from the shifter area is resolved. I would explain the rattle more as a vibration but it created a rattle type sound from the vibration. I know, hard to understand...
Anyway its gone. Not sure that is the same thing everyone else is talking about but in my case that seems to have been the problem!

I havent heard the noise but my shifter shakes like crazy. But its all normal to me cause it does pretty much everything my YJ did. I suggest to get rid of the noise, turn the radio up.

I have the same noise. 2012 Wrangler Sport Unlimited. Noticed the noise around 1500 miles. seams to become noticable when its warm outside maybe 50 degrees or higher. I hear it going 40 mph in 4th gear and if i apply pressure to the shifter the noise goes away. Also hear like a skid plate rattle or exaust rattle when i'm waiting to pick up my order going through a fast food drive threw. I took it in to 2 different dealerships and they said that it was normal. Now all I hear is my wife saying " I told you you should have gotten an automatic".Also 3100 miles and the ABS light comes on. Dealer replaced a speed sensor and repaired a wiring connector. I'm a little scared to take this thing off road. I know that it's a jeep thing and I'm trying to understand.

Those wheel sensors are sensitive.

I truly believe some noises we hear are because of the lack of insulation.
Even when I have my heater blower on -the sounds are not heard. The engine is quiet the exhaust is quiet. You here every thing else. IMO just characteristics of a jeep

Mine does the same in 3rd only. Its a wierd ticking/clicking sound that I found if I push up on the shifter it goes a way a little. I believe its completely normal though.

Mine '10 has done this almost from the start, kind of like the shift knob rattling sound. Kinda reminds me I'm driving a real offroader!
