Read OBDII codes on your odometer - easy!

You can easily read stored OBDII error codes in any JK by doing the following:

Starting with the ignition key in the off possition, cycle the key through 'Acc' to 'On' and back off (quickly - before dash lights display and 'ding' is heard) three times. Off-On-Off-On-Off-On. All stored codes will read out in the odometer display.

This works on the TJ, but it'd be awesome if it works on the JKs, let alone the '11/'12 revisions. Anybody confirm?

Yep, it works on the '10. However... It only seems to show currently "live" codes, any that are stored from a previous fault occurrence dont show.

I had the ABS/ESP lights come on for no apparent reason, but by the time I got home they had gone out and the dash showed no current error codes. Took it to the dealer and they read of a list of them pointing to an intermittent fault in the clock spring (which has since been replaced with no recurrence of the fault).

Yup, then it doesn't keep time as accurately as it would with a good one.

Just messin' with ya: it's the component that allows your steering wheel controls, air bag connections, etc. to get through the steering column while allowing the steering wheel to make several rotations at the same time.

Yeap, reads current codes while the CEL is still on only. If the CEL is cleared, the codes are no longer available by this method. But, they are still stored so other readers can access them. IIRC

Does anyone have a list of error codes for the 2011 JK? I have the ones for a 2005 Liberty. The same ignition process worked ( on off on off on).

ABS/ESP won't have trouble codes through OBDII anyways. They are independent of that system.

i have a Q: My sister's KJ had a bunch of codes showing on the odometer using the ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON trick, and fixed most of the problems.

I had to reset the codes to check if they are reoccurring, so i unplugged to battery for 5 min and the codes are reset, i used to do that with my TJ and my dad's wj all the time with no problems.

After a while the engine light came back on and on of trick is not showing anymore, i kind of suspected that this will happen this time cause usually when there are no codes, it only displays done, now nothing!

what's wrong?

Even pre-OBD II Chrysler vehicles - YJ's - any of 'em, I know as far back as '87, will give you codes. Same on off on off on with the key, then you'd stare at the check engine light and count the flashes to come up with two- digit error codes. At the end it will flash two fives which means end of codes. Ford and Chevy used to do this too, but I think they no longer do. One of the things I've liked about Chrysler.

Maybe everyone knew about the older ones. But if not, you do now.

Finding what the codes on any of them means is just an easy Google search using "Chrysler diagnostic codes" or some such.

If you have a cheap bluetooth OBD scanner and the Torque app, Torque will look the codes up for you. Highly recommend the Torque app.

Your "rhythm" is just off. Keep trying. My older Grand Cherokee was real sensitive to how long the ignition was in the on position....

When my Jeep ran really rought and sputtery a few weeks ago I got a CEL and took it to the dealer who told me that the ECU never generated a code and wrote anything to the computer even though it clearly came on and the engine acted like it was going to explode. The service guy also told me the '12's no longer have the ability to read codes by doing the above instructions. Was he full of $h1t and the '12's can still show you codes by doing the thing above? If so then I have lost what little confidence I had in that particular dealer.

He's full of it. I've done it myself. Try it yourself. If you have no codes it just says "done" or something like that, IIRC.

Edit: Apparently I don't recall correctly. Older Jeeps read "done" if no codes, 2012 didn't do anything for me when I tried just now... But, when I had a CEL, I used the on-off-on-off-on method to read it. (It was just a loose gas cap code.)

I had a scangauge 2 hooked into it at the time too when i got the CEL and didn't use it to read the code either because A.) I didn't realize it read trouble codes at the time and B.) I never would have guessed in my wildest dreams that the ECU would not have stored the code of the CEL in its own memory...

Next time it happens, if it happens again, then I'll use the Scangauge 2 to determine the code and record the entire incident on my iphone for the dealer. I mean the engine was running REALLY rough and acting like it was going to konk out and then it started really hard after that for the first time but all was well since.

FWIW.. this will actually work on most Jeeps and Chrysler vehicles of the past 20 years. It even worked in my '96.

This doesn't work on my JKU 2012. Any suggestions? I have a CEL solid, not blinking. The on/off 3X method does not work.

Yeah I finally did it right but it threw no codes, just "DONE". So maybe bad gas or something. The gas cap was on tight, so idk.

Ok, so, I got it to work, but it simy said "done" then the check engine light flashed 10 times. The light was on when I pulled into the garage so I know something is wrong. I've got a 2012 sport (2 door). Light came on two weeks ago and I made an appt with the dealer. The light went out before my appt on Monday, but it had the stores code P0302. Dealer tells me that is the code for a bad cylinder and may be the head problem but he can't be for sure since the light is no longer on and the engine seems to be running fine. Also re flashes the cup and tells me it didn't have te update that should have been done as it was released in Feb of this year and I bought the jeep certified used in October. Suggestions?

2015 requires you hold down the trip meter lever and only cycle the ignition cylinder once
