Read This BEFORE buying a 2012 Wrangler -QC

Well, it's time to share all that I've learned with the crew here on WF. I ordered my Wrangler way back the first week the order banks opened and got exactly what I wanted...or so I thought. Lets get right to the point: with 2300 miles on the clock, here are the problems.

* Roof leaked onto center console and into stereo

* Rolled off semi with chunks under the paint (aka junk in the paint) on
several spots; makes paint sharp and pointy (added security?)

* Over-spray on fenders

* Loud bearing sounds come from auto tranny when cold (between
1200-1400 rpm) sounds as if something internally is loose.

* Recovery hooks scratched-up from factory.

* Driver door barely closes (needs to be man-handled)

* Windshield/door gasket installed incorrectly at factory (misformed, sticks
out of the door jamb)

* Rear head-rest on passenger side won't fold down

* Vibrating noise comes from dash.

* Underbody pre-rusted (thanks, no charge)

Let me say that I understand there are going to be 'Jeep things' (this is my 2nd Jeep), such as grinding noises when you shift into 4L and greater wind noise, etc. There are also things that you can't let pass by, after shelling out over $31,000. If I had just laid out $3000 for an old beater, no problem, but not a Jeep with 2 miles on it. The best part is that Jeep/Fiat has a slogan printed on the top of the build sheet that says something like, "Our goal is to deliver the highest quality vehicles in the world". I completed the Jeep survey and gave my email and phone (several weeks ago); no reply as they stated. The other awesome part is that all the problems, were already on multiple choice boxes; thanks for knowing about all these problems, but refusing to fix them. After waiting forever for my Jeep to get through VASC and all the other supposed quality control checks along the build, it still came off the line with all these problems. My girlfriend's Compass was flawless, why skimp on the icon?

Well, I ordered a 2012 Wrangler in June also, my Jeep doesn't have any of those problems. I would consult with the dealership if those complaints are all verifiable . That's is excessive.

I would most definitely have jeep take care of you. Those are almost all issues that should never happen.

No problems with mine, ordered Aug 29 delivered sep 28. Should have never left factory like that, and should have never left the lot like that. Your dealer failed to inspect it, and you should have never accepted it.

I spent a full hour crawling in around and under mine before I ever signed anything. That being said I still missed a minor broken trim piece that the dealer replaced the next day.

Hopefully they will fix the issues, but this crap is not uncommon on the big three. I worked as a cop for the last decade and spent many nights just looking at new cars on the lots of local dealers. For whatever reason, early production vehicles seemed to have a lot of these issues. Not just new models, I mean vehicles that had been in production for years, the vehicles built in July august seemed to have issues. Maybe because it is still summer and guys are jacking around, hung over and looking forward to the next weekend? Mine built on September 17th was nearly perfect. After labor day, and far enough into the fall that everyone was in the groove?????

Add me to the list of why did you drive it off the lot? I can see missing a few of these issues in the rush to get it home but the way you describe it makes it seem that they were immediately noticeable.

Thanks for the words and support (though I wish one of you was Mike Manly from Jeep).

The only issues I realized on the dealer lot after looking at it for over 40 minutes were the paint; they're response was, "No problem, leave it here. Our guy (fill in jabroni name) will grind those spots off and repaint them; you'll hardly notice it was even there". I said no thanks, I could live with them, but still not happy it's f'd from the factory.

All the other items didn't happen until I had about 100 miles on it (as it was perfect until then). Then the tranny noise, the leaks, the rattles. I noticed the door gasket seal after it started leaking, as it's not very noticeable unless your searching for leaks.

The dealer's response was basically; "It's a Jeep, they all do this, but we can take a look'.

I just posted this so that someone who expects a 'new level' of quality for Chrysler, with all their flashy new commercials and great ads, should know it's the same old crap for their true flagship icon, the Wrangler (which, like a red-headed step-child, I still love).

That's the biggest issue....people who come out of Honda Accords and Toyota Camry's, etc. into a Jeep Wrangler are going to complain about everything. They drive bad, quality is bad, reliability is bad, fuel mileage is bad, and dealer service is bad. There is a reason the Honda Civic and Toyota Camry sell so well and are rated so highly in consumer reports, car & driver etc., it is because they are built right.

I have driven Wranglers since 1998 and have had numerous people ask me if they should buy one.....my first question EVERY time is...What are you driving now? Followed by, will you take the top and doors off? If they are driving a BMW or Honda I tell them NO!!! You will not be happy with a Jeep, or if they are the type who won't take the top AND doors off, I tell them NO!! You won't be happy with a Jeep.

They say one good day in a Jeep with the top and doors off makes up for the rest of the crap you put up with the rest of the year!!!!

Yea, take it back to the dealer. Most of if not all of them should be covered under warranty.

I'm a hair under 1k miles on mine and I have none of those listed issues, or any for that matter. Mine did leak, but that was my fault, and has been bone dry since.

I would like to suggest that you add or reword the question about taking the top and doors off. I LOVE my Wrangler, yet I won't take the top or the doors off because it's a lot of work, and I don't want it stolen. Besides, my lifestyle, how I live and work, makes it very difficult to get the top off (I'm a single woman and have no place to put it). If I lived in a house with a garage, I might do that. I don't like the sedan vehicles or most modern foreign vehicles available here in the states; I've had enough of them, having driven them for 30 years with the exception of a small station wagon and a hatchback, both Big-3s. They're good cars, but gosh, come on! It's just not the same, no adventure to it. I love my Jeep also because I feel like I step into a simpler time. There was a time when I had dreamed of multi-level air highway systems for people to fly their vehicles in, powered by some technology we don't have today, wondering how long it would be before we reach the time of Star Trek. After I've had a taste of how technology is being applied by our enemies, I now dread all of it. I flashed back 40 years and got stuck there. Jeeps give me that feeling, plus that they are easier to work on than pretty much any modern vehicle 4-wheel vehicles on the road today.

If you've never taken the top and doors off.....you've only experienced a third of the fun that is Jeeping :-)

Get some friends over the next 80+ degree day, take the top and doors off, even if it's just for the day I promise it is worth it, and cruise around for just three or four hours and watch all of your stress and cares melt away ;-)

I'm new to all this, and I don't have a place to even set the hard top down anywhere, not to mention putting the top back on is a pain; even the dealership couldn't put it back on correctly without their "hard top specialist" - my right door deal was ripped up, and the dealer replaced the seal and reattached the hard top at their cost (because the PO had NEVER removed the soft top from inside).

My 2012 is perfect. I've had a couple of minor issues, but I have no complaints. So far with 5000 miles on it, it's in the top 3 vehicles I've ever owned.

I havn't got a clue as to the '12's, but I do have an '11. I bought my first Jeep because I always wanted one, but what sold me was the classy way my Jeep was done. Its a 'different, even unique' vehicle, that you cant miss, but I love the creature comforts I have as well. Sure PW, PDL, Heated Mirror's, Sat Radio, AC PS, PB, arn't hard core JEEP, but I like them.

I love the way my Jeep looks, rides, and drives. Sure the 6 spd isn't Porsche smooth, but the breaks are WAYYYYY better than on my Frontier. Steering is very good, 4WD works great, but the seats are comfy and the interior is very well done.

I find the 3.8 ok, not a great motor, but its ok, paint was VERY good, fit and finish was EXCELLANT. Frankly the interior is wayyyyy better than many other vehicles IMHO.....ya its got some 'stark' to it but its also got some class as well.

I bought it because it was actually a step UP from my then ride......And I don't think you have to "go native" to own and drive a JK......just my $ 0.02.

I hear ya....but it is not hard and your dealer must be horrible. There are simply 3 torx head bolts on each side holding the top on, two nuts on each door hinge holding them on. Remove those and lift off. It's heavy, no doubt, you need a couple strong people, but all in all much simpler with fewer steps than a soft top.

Hopefully some day, you'll be able to do this.....very very sad story..... :-(

That is tough news. I'm sorry you had to get all those issues.

Although, I have to agree with a lot of the others on here. I've had my '12 JKU for close to 1000 miles (and the hard top has come off almost every weekend on Friday) and I've had absolutely no problems. Love every second riding in it. Regarding hard top removal, I installed a pulley in my garage, replaced the torx with hand tightened bolts and it literally takes me less than 10 minutes to remove the top, leave the top stored in the hoist and take off.

Good luck resolving this and don't let those morons get away with this garbage!

Well ......................

I still have not sold my 2003 Tundra, so I am not putting many miles on my 2012 JKU (only about 500-mi so far).

In that 500-mi not one problem, even been to a hi-pressure auto wash, no leaks!

At 65-yo and months away from retirement, and ~20-yrs since my last Jeep, I chose this one HANDS-DOWN!

Now for the $$$$$$ for Mods! Happy 4-wheeling to all!

My '12 jkur

I've been in the process of buying my Jeep from a dealer 120 mile away in California, did all the "buying" online using the TL program and doing the whole deal remote. Dealer's delivering on Tuesday. Read this post, and I'm sorry about you problems. I was so scared I jumped in my Bimmer (I promise I won't Hate my Rubicon, lol) and drove 120 miles to the dealer. No problems and I was happy that It took me 2 minutes to voice pair my phone.
Can't wait for Tuesday.

Well, Not with the Jeep dealer, But I've had issues with Lithia in the past. I would have purchased from them, but they order most of their Jeeps with leather, nav, etc, I didn't want to order and wait so I started looking online and AutoWest orders their's with auto, tow, connect, hard top and that's me, and It's white, I'm really excited!!!

I live in Toledo,OH where the jeep is made. In the Summer they hire kids to replace the normal employees that take vacation or layoffs. So yes, If you have one made in the summer it's probably gonna have more problems.
