ready to buy a 2008 Sahara but. . .

I started researching them a little and am reading about rusting hinges and no-start issues. I really REALLY want to get this Jeep but am getting a little worried about future issues as this will be my every day driver. I have no problem working on cars but body work is one thing I leave to the professionals. So I guess I am just looking for a little reassurance. Do all 2007 and up Jeeps have these problems? I am looking at a Silver 2008 Sahara. I do not see any bubbling paint on its hinges yet so maybe not all 2008s had this problem? I do see i light dusting of rust on the hex bolts for the door hinges and windshield hinges. Anyone here ever switch to stainless steel hinges? Anyone hear have to no start issues?

So sorry guys/gals, this is my first post and didn't introduce myself. My name is Den and I live in Plainfield Illinois. I have always been a big Mustang person and have basically had one for the last 20 years. I am ready for a change. I was so awesome on my test drive I had all the good Wrangler drivers waving at me! That was so awesome! In the mustang the closest thing I get to a wave is the middle finger! Thanks for any and all advice.

I also have an 08 Sahara and have never had any major problems with it. I just suggest checking over the vehicle before you buy it and see what condition it's in.
The Sahara is a great Jeep model, looks great both in the interior and exterior.
I do wish now that I had gotten a Rubicon instead though.

I work at a Jeep dealer and have seen some used Jeep Wranglers in all years with that problem. My guess is it depends on how you take care of it. The big question is how much is the 08 vs. a brand new 2010 or 2011 for that matter. Everyone is on a different budget but it depends how big the gap is between the used and new.

That's funny, this is my first post, too. I'm also a Mustang person and looking to buy my first Wrangler. I've always kept a Grand Cherokee, but I'm wanting to get a 4 Door Wrangler for my weekend vehicle and get out of the Mustang game for awhile. I never get to drive the damn car unless it's to a show. I'm also trying to research these same issues.

I tell you if you're looking at 08s consider how much you're paying and how much you can get a new one for. I was just looking at used unlimited with hard tops and power package. I couldn't find one that wasn't torn up for less than 27k out the door. I decided to start talking new with the dealers. Eventually I found my perfect 2010 new for 28k out the door. Stick, power package, hard top, 3.73, trac-loc. It was a hard fun since there aren't many 2010s left but once I found it I knew it was perfect. And an extra 1k for a brand new one with warranty is a small price to pay.

I've found several in the 22k range with very low miles 07-08s. I have to have a hard top and it must be either a Sahara or a Rubicon, fully loaded.

Best heed the advice, it's not unusual to see '08 JKU Rubis prices, in the 31/33K range-

Yeah, the ones I'm seeing for that price range are Sahara editions.

I'll start looking around at some new ones. I had no idea they were going that cheap now.

I know what your saying about just going new, but I dont want a payment. I'm gonna give them my mustang and a few grand. I have found some really nice 08's here. One black one I looked at only has 6700 miles. The one I really like has 25k, navigation, and a big surprise under the freedom hard top, it came with a factory soft top too!

I tell you, I have Jeep fever! I'm at work and glance out the window and I see a wrangler go by. I'm driving home and theres a Sahara right in front of me. I get home and in the neighbors driveway sits a Wrangler. Its like God is taunting me!

I actually pulled all the performance parts off the mustang yesterday. The car is actually pleasurable to drive now. I'm waiting to see if the dealer will call me back and drop the price to get me back in the door. If not, there are so many out there I really have my pick of anything. Thanks for all the advise guys.

I've been driving pickups for so long that all cars, regardless of heritage, seem archaic and useless for my rural lifestyle.

But I do have the Wrangler Fever too.

I just got quoted $29,000 on a new Sahara fully loaded with a hard top and an automatic.

And they told me that if I wanted to wait on a 2011 that the price would be pretty much the same.

The Wrangler has the best retained value of any vehicle on KBB right now. Now that's saying something for quality and loyalty.

Damn it I wish I could sell this Mustang, lol

i hate to give this type of advice, but i think you can get a 2010 sport model optioned the way want, with warranty, at a pretty good price so you may want rethink getting new. especially if they have 0%. that coupled with being able to deduct sales taxes off your income tax return, you might break even.

I think I'm for sure going with a new Sahara and getting a LSD from the factory. I'm going to drive a 6 speed before I decided. I really wanted an auto, but now I'm thinking I better try out both before deciding. No way I'm giving $22k for one with 60K when I can give $28-29k for a brand new one with a warrenty.

Welp I did it last night! I got a 2008 Silver Sahara auto w/ nav/ freedom top/ and soft top. I traded in my 2008 Mustang GT/CS. It was really hard at the last minute to trade in my Mustang but I did it. The freedom tops came out for my drive home and there were no regrets. I got the Jeep for my mustang and 2 grand. Mustang had 50,000 miles on it and the jeep has 29,000.

This weekend the hard top is coming off. Can this be a one-man job? How heavy is it?

It's probably too awkward for one person.

You are not going to get that rear hardtop piece off by yourself. I am quite a strong fellow and there is no way I could do it without dropping it. If you have a garage (I dont) you could always back in to your garage, and lay a blanket down and slide it off backwards. That way would be feasible for one person, but you won't be able to get it back on by yourself.
