real axle seal leak?

I usually do all the regular maintenance on my Jeep but I took it in to a local place to do an oil change. The mechanic brought me over to show me that the rear axle seals/rear wheel seals were leaking a little bit on both sides. Is this covered under our 100,000 mile warranty?

I just noticed the same problem on mine today. The driver side rear axle seal is leaking. The backing plate is dark and wet with oil. I have a 2012 with 59k miles. I bought the additional lifetime powertrain warranty. However, I have a 3" lift and 35" tires. I hope this is covered under warranty. I'll know soon.

I'd be interested to know if you get this covered with the large tires.

I have no extended warrenty, just the 100k powertrain that came with the vehicle. They replaced the entire axle shaft on both sides at no cost and under warrenty.

Do you have stock wheels and tires?

Mine started leaking at about 3000 miles. Already had it lifted with 35's and the dealer replaced it under warranty without issue.

If you went through a seal at only 3k miles I would seriously look at a wheel being out of balance.

Yea everything is stock. Besides some cosmetic stuff I did the only thing changed on the jeep was the recall for the ac line. The leak was noticed after that

That's good that it was caught and taken care of.

I hate to sound like a dealer but I wonder if this is my problem. I know how hard it is to balance a 35" tire just using stick on wheel weights, which usually fall off. I'm going to get mine rebalanced before I have the seal replaced.

Seal was defective. Do a search, you'll see this is a relatively common problem, even with unmodified JK's.

I had this prob. at 12500mi. Left rear seal, 2012 Wrangler Sport. Took it to dealer(outside of my area, I was on the road) and they wouldn't cover it, they said I modified the seal plate. Huh? It's a new Jeep. Why would I do this when I have warranty to fix all drive train issues?? They showed me the plate, see photo, SOMEBODY had spot welded the pressed in bolts! This melted the plastic seal. HUH?? WTF?? How in F### did that happen? I had to pay for the repair. Took it to where I bought it, Lancaster Chrysler Jeep.--- To make a long story shorter, they had no answer, finally agreed to repay me after many phone calls to corp/ Chrysler, it took them five months to get me a check. No apologies. No reason for modification. Wow.

I'm a little late with my reply, but the dealer had my Jeep for 3 days. They refused to order any parts until they I left it with them. They ended up replacing both rear axle seals for free. I do have the lifetime powertrain coverage; I'm not sure if I would have been charged if I didn't have it. I thought only the left side was leaking, but it's nice that they did both sides. They also gave me a 2014 wrangler as a loaner for free for 3 days which I was very happy about.

The receipt makes it look like they did the bearings and brake pads also. I know they didn't do the pads...

Some people are reporting that they twisted the axle shaft upwards. Does that make sense? Like the u joint would be up towards the cab. Weak welds from the factory and a too much fun offroad...

EDIT: also my 2014 jkur rear diff is sweating a bit... the dealer pointed it out when I went I'm for routine maintenance and said they'll cover it under warranty. I was just about to change the fluids anyways, score!!

I just got my oil changed today on my 2013 JKU and they said both rear seals and bearings are messed up :-/ no loft, no off-roading other than my crazy driveway and stock wheels. 50,275 miles. Thank goodness its covered under the power-train warranty, but it seems to early to be having this kind of issue.

Not too early, as stated before it's a known issue, crap seals. Mine were done at 10k.
My question is would this be a Chrysler issue or is this a Dana issue. Doesn't Chrysler buy these units complete from Dana, if so why have they not addressed this as of yet. In the end of course it's all Chrysler issues, at least as far as us end users are concerned.
