Really weird warning lights flashing randomly

So tonight in my 2012 (2500 miles on it) I was slowing to a stop and I heard the alarm chime (like for low fuel).

I looked at the instrument cluster and it kept chiming. The Sway Bar light, traction control, and others were flashing randomly while chiming.

It stopped, and has not done it since.

Not THAT big of a deal, but if it is something major, I'd like to know now rather than at 75 on the freeway.

Any ideas?

Scott

I'd say it's major. It's also covered under warranty. Probably a fuse or relay but regardless, what ever is tripping them all together should be fixed pronto.

Think I saw that in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Did you happen to see any bright lights passing overhead?

I'd look to see if any fail codes in the check engine indicator first. In park, engine off, cycle keyswitch 3X between off and on ( not start) rapidly will display the codes. A ODBII code reader will show them if you have one. Not all codes display with the keyswitch. Some are held invisible until it happens several times.

A guy named Willee51 had some similar problems with his new Jeep not too long ago. Turned out his PCM ground wire wasn't connected properly. His problems started out with weird blinking lights like what you described, but progressed to where his Jeep died and he was frying coil packs.

Might be something totally unrelated, but worth looking into after you check the easier stuff.

Another ground wire worth checking is the ECU. On a '12 it attaches to one of the bolts that holds the ECU itself (thin silver unit mounted vertically on front driver's side of engine bay, just behind windshield washer fluid). Several peeps who've installed the sPOD had problems with it not being grounded properly, and causing dash lights, etc to go haywire.

Might be as simple as unhooking your battery, grounding it out to reset the computer, and hooking it back up.

I hate electricity!

Jk electrical problem
PCM fix .... negative!

My 2012 jk is doing the flashing trouble light and dinging occasionally too. I just dropped it off at the dealer shop. We'll see what they say is wrong with it. Last week the water pump started squealing and they had to replace it. I'm not real impressed with this jeep.

Update on Mine: Dealer kept it for two days and all they found was a loose connector at the alternator. They snugged it down, declared victory and gave it back to us. Guess what.
It is doing it again and getting worse.

It was the electronic sway bar disconnect motor in mine. They were not water sealed (imagine that) and started shorting out.

Mine is back in the shop for the third time for the same issue. It is getting worse and doing other weird things. The other night, it had no power at all for about 30 seconds when I tried to start it. Not even interior lights when I opened the door. After about 30 seconds, the power comes back on and everything works. The next day, My air conditioner would not turn on, but at the same time, my rear window defrost orange light started blinking for no reason instead. Still getting all the random flashing cluster gauge lights. The radio clock resets itself about everytime things go haywire (about once every 30 minutes or more). The blinker spead up and slowed down the other day too. needless to say, it is back in the shop.. One more time of it not getting fixed at the shop and I'm going to have to start looking at the lemon law options. I didn't pay $30+K for a new car that is startign top spend all its time in the dealership shop and not getting repaired.
Luckily, the dealership has authorized a rental for my wife to drive. They put a device on the Jeep to capture the trouble codes. They gave it back to us because they couldn't duplicate it after keeping it for a week. I had over 10 incidents in 2 days and recorded 4 of them. Hopefully this week they will figure it out and fix it.

From what I read the most common problem for crazy dash lights is the clock spring in the steering wheel.

Did they get it fixed? What did they find?

Check your battery connections to make sure they are clean and tight. The cable connectors on the 2012 are tricky. You will think they are tight when in fact they are not. Even the slightest break in contact will cause the condition you describe. I had this trouble and cured it by re-tightening both battery cable connections.

This. I had all of these same issues above and i couldnt figure out what it was for a few weeks. My speedo would drop to zero on the highway and my brake/abs/esp lights would light up all the time for no reason. I couldnt link it to weather or road conditions. finally one day my jeep got no power when i went to start it. Checked everything and in the process wiggled a battery cable. Started fine after that. Pulled off the cable loosened it, put in the whole way down the post of the battey with a few light taps then tightend it up and havent seen the issue since.

Thanks! I'll gave it a try tonight. I hope it works. FYI the connections didn't seem as tight as they should have been.

Update on mine: STILL in the shop. We are on week #3 of it at the dealership. They are waiting on parts to replace the instrument cluster. I think they have to program the computer that is built in with it so that it matches our Jeep and has the correct mileage recorded on it. Summer break is coming to an end and we have not been able to go camping and use the Jeep. This is getting old quick.

Well, after a month of my Jeep sitting in the Dealership's Service Dept and still not being fixed, I decided to trade it in for a 2014 Rubicon.

Probably a good choice. I may do the same if I have to take mine back again.

Congrats on your new Rubi!

My sway, ebrake and traction was flashing today. Traction light stayed on. Time to make that appointment and I only have 1400 miles.

Did you ever get this resolved. I'm having the same issue with my 2013 JKU. It's been in the shop for 4 weeks now. The dealership replaced the Powertrain Control Module but still the ABS/Traction Control/Hill Assist lights flash on the dash. I started experiencing this after 3000 miles. Now I have 7000 miles. I've been troubleshooting the problem myself because it doesn't register an error code. Frustrating.

I have a 10A JKU and started having this problem about a month ago. Took it to dealer got it back a few days ago and the problem continues. I will take it in and mention the PCM and loose battery cables. Anyone have any updates on this problem....My speedometer goes to zero, radio turns off, brake lights, hill descent and swaybar lights flash....driving me crazy!

Sounds like bad ground for pcm or clocks print issue... I had similar issue and it was the ground wire in the drivers footwell, just to the left of your feet in front of the door kinda behind the plastic cover there. The nut had come loose on the stud, I just tightened it up and all was good

I will try this out. It's been awhile since you posted this, did the issue ever come back?

Thanks Marslim, now that I think of it I installed a dead foot pedal on the driver side and it is mounted over a ground wire. I wonder if that could be it.....

Quite possibly is! I noticed mine after accidentally hitting the plastic panel with my foot one day and the steering wheel controls and radio flickered off and the traction control light and low tire light flashed on... so I kicked it again and they flickered again, got home and had a look and found that loose connection. Good luck!

Well it's been three weeks since I tightened the ground wire and bolts on my dead foot pedal. Also, checked the battery terminals and my sPod connection to the battery which was a little loose. No more weird warning lights! Thank you all for posting on this issue.

I had a Dakota with all sorts of weird electrical behavior. One day I was poking around under the hood and found a ground stud, for several wires and noticed the nut was crossthreaded, all connections were loose, sliding up and down the stud - trying to remove the nut broke the stud off, so I fashioned an extension - with a few bits from the electrical department of the hardware store and grounded them all on the firewall. Problems all solved.
