Recall: 2012 Chrysler vehicles—potential engine seizure

While the wrangler is not listed it is the 3.6

Chrysler is recalling 667 model-year 2012 vehicles because debris inside the engine block could cause connecting rod bearing failure, which can lead to engine seizure and thereby increase the risk of a crash.

All of the recalled vehicles are equipped with a 3.6L engine and include the following:

Chrysler 200
Chrysler Town and Country
Dodge Charger
Dodge Durango
Dodge Grand Caravan
Dodge Journey
Jeep Grand Cherokee

Maybe the unique features of the Wrangler version kept them out of the problem batch.

makes you wonder about quality control if that many made it out with dirt in the engine.

Has anybody posted an engine problem with a 2012 JK?

667 Vehicles, across that many lines, is probably about 2 hours of production.
Chrysler also stated that most were not sold.

It's worth keeping an eye on though to see if this becomes more widespread, but I wouldn't sweat it. There are hundreds of thousands of those engines in service, many for more than a year, without any problems.

They had problems cleaning out the blocks of the 3.6 because they don't have freeze out plugs. Allpar mentioned that a while back Chrysler was aware of it and it was supposed to be addressed by Chrysler. This is another reason why I change the factory fill of oil early. I'd suggest anyone with a 2012 Wrangler to drop the oil early, and more than once in the first 1500 miles or so. JMO

That's good advice for any new vehicle IMHO. I was going to do the first change at 1000, but I think I'll be doing it at 500...just to be on the safe side.

Hmmm....not sure how I would feel about having my engine replaced in a month...or week.....or day old vehicle.

I'm thinking...."Nah....give me a loaner and build me another one....and handle my car note for a month or hook me up with extra options as well".

What if you already put 46,990 on the odometer?

The quality control at the Pentastar plant is amazing, granted its tough to say that after an engine recall. The quality checks that are done there occur much more often and the tolerances are much tighter then anything they have ever done before. Nice thing now is with modern tracking systems it is very easy to locate and quarantine any suspect parts/motors.

Cleaning out a block with no freeze out plugs is a major chore. I'm wondering if they might need to tweak the design of the block, or still further improve upon the cleaning methods?

I agree although I doubt they'd replace the vehichle w/o one hell of a fight.

In a month or a week or a day? Damn...you might want to invest in some Preperation H, No-Doze, and a diesel engine!

- the manifold and intake-runner tuning are exclusive to Wrangler Pentastar
- redesign for the upper and lower oil pan to accommodate increased grade requirements
- relocated alternator
- and most importantly...unique acoustic engine cover (probably blocked the debris - dropped beer bottle caps and roach clips)

LOL I wouldn't be surprised if some of the 2012 Wranglers become part of the recall. The block is the issue, and the block is the same for all 3.6L Pentastar engines. I'm sure Chrysler will stay on top of this and make the corrections if need be going forward.

It was a two week interval, vehicles built between 8/31/2011 and 9/13/2011

This does kind of make you wonder about those metal shavings people are finding in the oil filter, doesn't it?

You beat me to it! Knowing this, I'd drive home from the dealer and dump the oil, and filter, then again at either 500 or a 1000 miles. Safe than sorry in this case. Since Allpar mentioned cleaning issues when the P-Star engine first came out, it appears they might still be having some problems. I'm glad they caught it before it ended up being thousands.

Great. My JK was built 9/02.

Pat, is there any explanation as to why Wranglers don't seem to be involved?

It would be reassuring.

How do you find the exact date of manufacture? My door sticker has date of manufacture of 9-11. Is that September 11th? They don't put a year? So is it 9/11/2011?

Chrysler knows the batch of 3.6L engines affected and where they went in the supply chain. If any went to the Toledo Wrangler plant, they would have recalled them. They didn't. Relax. (until they do...)

Search this forum for 'Insight'. You'll find out how to use your VIN to get the entire history of your Jeep's build from order to delivery to dealer. The date it goes to "I" status is the date of build.
