Redline Goods Shift Boot Install for 2011

As some might recall, we were having issues in our 2011 with the manual shifter popping / jumping out of the even gears, so I cut off the OEM rubber boot and have been running that way for months without issue.

Redline Goods didn't have a pattern for the 2011, so they let me be the guinea pig. I sent them an OEM boot for the pattern and asked them to make a plain black one in leather.

Here's the install.

1) Remove both the shift knobs for the shifter and the transfer case. They both pull straight off. I found it easiest to pull levers toward the rear of the car, then stand in the back seat and pull. Be careful to not punch yourself in the face when then let go. Here's what the top of the shift levers look like:



2) Pop off the top of the center console. It needs to be removed to unclip the shift boot. Pull the emergency brake up to the top click to give yourself room. Grab the edges on either side of the console down by the carpet and pull up. It will pop right off. Here's what it looks like removed (sorry I forgot to grab a picture before I removed the boot). As you can see it also forms the top of the cup holder.

3) Squeeze and unclip the two clips holding on the shift boot underneath the console.

4) Now that the boot is free, you need to cut off the rubber upper section because you need to reuse the frame that clips to the console.

5) Take some sand paper and rough up the rubber coating on the frame so the glue will stick better.

6) Now glue on the new leather boot. I chose Elmer's Stix-All because it doesn't dry instantly and it's supposed to be rated for cold and hot applications. Run a bead around the inside of the boot and clamp it to the frame. I used binder clips and a clamp with a couple pieces of wood. I understand you can use contact cement too, but I didn't think I was talented enough to get it positioned correctly in one shot.

7) Wait 24 hours for the glue to dry.

8) Remove the clamps and reinstall the boot. It's a tight fit to get it back in the console since the overall size of the frame/boot is bigger, but it fits. I used a putty knife to help slide it into place.

9) Now install the console the same way it came off and slide the shift knobs back on until they click into place.

That's it! The quality of the stitching and assembly is excellent. Highly recommended!

We'll see if we have some more cold days here in Michigan to see if the jumping-out-of-gear issue stays away. I have no reason to believe it will come back since the leather is so much more compliant than the OEM rubber.

Nope -- genuine simulated leather grained rubber.

I glued the boot back on with the same glue since I had a tube left over. This should work better...

First off, I wanted to say thanks to the forum for helping me solve this problem. I was having all kinds of trouble with my Jeep popping out of 2,4,6 seemingly at random in cold weather. I checked online and realized it had to do with the shift boot on certain models of JK. I found the tech bulletin, called the dealership and arranged for a service appointment. When I got there, they acted like they had no idea why I was there. I took off work to bring my car in and they didn't have the part. It was like the conversation on the phone never took place.

I came back here to see if there were any DIY instructions and found this thread. I decided to give the Redline Goods site a shot based on the OP instructions and review. I've attached screenshots of the product I ordered so you can see the workmanship. I'm a huge fan of the video game Mass Effect, and have N7 decals all over my Jeep. I sent a link to Redline showing them the distinctive stripe pattern of the N7 uniform. I ordered it on the 14th of the month, found a discount code on their site for the order, so I splurged on a shipping and had a finished product installed in my car on the 20th. That is insane. In all the times I've ordered custom phone cases, custom motorcycle leather, even custom cut decals, I don't think I've ever seen a turnaround so fast. In fact I had the new shift boot installed before the dealership even called to apologize for their terrible service. I was happy to tell them the problem was already solved.

Anyway, I just came back to give Redline a well-deserved plug. Would definitely use them again.
As for the technical issue, it never came back after the new boot was installed. I didn't make any other modifications. Much less resistance pulling the lever into those positions and it doesn't pop back out.

Only thing I could add to the above instruction is that I found you really need to TWIST the knob while pulling for all you're worth, alternating between the 11:00 and 1:00 position and "walking" it off a little before it finally pops off in your hand. I ended up scraping up my stock shift knobs in trying to figure out how to remove them, so I replaced them with the Drake knobs you see in the photos. (Use loctite blue on the set screw, trust me.)
