Remote starter

Now that the snow is here to stay and i have to wait a good five mins for the defroster to clear the winshield, I am looking into getting a remote starter for my jk unlimited 2013.

Looking for your insight on which ones to get and if they are worth it or not?

Thanks?

I can clear my windshield in 30 seconds with a scraper.

We have the factory one in our Jeep and it works really nice.

My truck did not have one so I added a Viper alarm/remote start. Most of the cost is installation so if you want a remote start I would get the alarm too. I would also find a shop that solders all the connections and offers lifetime warranty on the installation. There are allot of hack installers out there that will cause you nothing but problems. I purchased mine from a company that only does car stereos, alarms and remote starts. They are not the cheapest but I have had mine for years and not one issue where my brother that had his done elsewhere went back over and over to have his fixed.

Good aftermarket units usually have much more range than the factory unit....and you can have an alarm installed as well. My factory unit works fine, but I do wish it had a bit more range....and a power windows option.

This is all true. And the range is better on aftermarket. That said I had the factory one installed anyways on my 2014. I have been happy with it. I use it every morning before work. It was fairly expensive to add at 450 parts and labor. But I now have 4 keys 2 with remote start and 2 without.

The 2 old keys will open the door but not start the jeep. I also have the factory remote start.....worth every cent.

The stock one on the Jeep is nice. I like how it automatically turns on the rear window and mirror defrost. I also noticed that it speeds the heater fan up no matter what setting you left it on the night before. My aftermarket one does not do either one of those.

I installed one in my Yukon and loved it. Can't recall name. Had "valet" in the name.

Un-obstructed 300' you won't get that distance thru a building window or even a full parking lot.

Some cases when I am leaving work it won't start until I am 30' if I don't have a clear shot.

Good idea. Mine worked through buildings. Don't know exact distance. Worked over very long distance if I had line of sight.

A nice option to buy is one that alerts you to let know the vehicle started. Helps when you don't have line of sight or if you start it by accident. It happens.

On the factory remote starts, can you change it to where it automatically turns on the AC rather than the heater for the summer time?

It knows what to do based on the outside temp. So if its over 75 outside ( I think its 75 ) it turns on the AC. If its under 45 it will turn on the heat.

Here's what I had installed (aftermarket, of course) in my 2012 JK, and I absolutely love it:

VIPER V4203 2-Way Responder Remote Car Starter
Winner of the 2009 CES Innovations Award, Responder One offers one button remote start with range of up to 2,000 feet plus LED confirmation! It's our smallest 2-way remote starter ever. Includes two ultra-miniature 1-button 2-Way SuperCode remotes. Bypass module required on most models - $29.99 and up.

Factory one here also, love it, works great. In my other rig I have one I can use my iphone to start it which is cool too. Endless range.

Why would anyone ever need to start their vehicle from 1/2 mile away? That's one hell of a walk to the parking lot.

Has anyone gotten a OEM Jeep remote start to work on a manual JK ?? ( I know all about leaving it in gear and crashing into a building and then the world ends etc etc etc) I just want to if anyone has done it? Obviously I want a remote start and I want the OEM one for the stock key as well.

Thanks

I agree 1/2 mile is quite alot. The Jeep warms up so quickly when I get in it's toasty.
