Removed sparetire carrier question

So i removed the spare tire holder for the time being and was just wondering if anyone else has done this and if so what did you use to pulg the whole where the brake light wiring comes through the tailgate?

Haven't ever removed mine. How big is the hole?

Hmmm....well I've already over-complicated it in my mind, which means I'm probably overlooking the obvious/easy solution. So I can't think of anything right now.

I was going to suggest silicone but that wouldn't be very easy on that size of a hole.

That being said I suppose you could cut out a piece of rubber or something about 1/4" wider all the way around, run a bead of silicone around the edge of the hold and then slap your new "patch" on it.

Sorry, best I can come up w/ for now.

There are a # of companies that make plates to cover that hole. Seen em on other forums...but I believe most of them bolt on.

I guess the question is, are you planning to go without your spare for awhile?

I have a Mopar Bumper/Tire carrier, and it doesn't use the tire stops. I found plastic caps at Pepboys and they fit perfectly.

Come on, you know you were thinking it.

Use the same groment that the 3 rd brakelight wire is ran thru. Tuck the plug into the tailgate then push the groment back in and it will work fine that is how i did it.

Heh.

I tried to resist saying it, but figured I'd beat someone else to the punch. LOL

When I installed my rugged ridge bumper and tire carrier I had to relocate my third light wiring. The bumper came with a rubber/plastic plug sort of like a grommet but without the hole.

To the OP, why did you remove your tire carrier?

i removed for the time being till i can either get a lighter tire setup or get a better tire carrier. the tire/rim setup i have right now wiegh 90 pounds and i was worried that it would mess something up back there. For the time being i did what BIGCOUNTRY10 did with his which for the time being worked very well.

Thanks for the help everyone

I think quadratec has a kit. Plate and a third light or you can also relocate the licence plate to the center and there is a plug for the hole in the quarter. Do a search and there were some pics. Also google images has it. You might like it and keep it off, it will reduce weight about 80 pounds or so.

I have been wanting to get a cover plate for my tailgate on my TJ. I have been looking all over the place for one that fits. It looks like the majority are for JKs. Does anyone know a site or where I can get one for the TJ? Or can I use the same one as the JK? Does anyone know if it can even be done? I have removed the entire mount etc. before but I didnt want to leave it that way without it being covered up.

I would appreciate the help!

Thanks
