Repainting Rubicon rock rails

I have some unsightly minor surface scratches/ scuffs on my Rubicon rock rails. Has anyone ever used black spray paint for metals such as the following to bring it back to new? Any recommendations/ tips?

Krylon Fusion 12 oz Spray Paint Black Satin

Krylon Fusion 12 oz Spray Paint Black Satin - 6 Pack (K02421001) - Spray Paint - Ace Hardware

How did they turn out? Did you have to sand/ primer the rails first or just spray painted directly over? Is the new paint holding up well? Is Hammerite tried and true for auto metal parts, never heard of it?

I keep a couple of cans in the garage. No sanding or priming. Just spray it on. It is made by Krylon and is used for outdoor iron furniture.

Hi Bob,

In addition to pics, do you have any tips for painting them? Just back and forth motion? How many coats?

Can you post some close up pics? So if I want it to match the factory black color as close as possible would I get the flat, satin or gloss black finish? Also how is the durability of this product? Will it hold up or will I have to continually dip it every few months? It won't be seeing much offroading. Sounds like based Plasti dipping is the best approach for me. Based on how safe it is to apply and durability. I just want to make sure the black spray can matches the original color.

On second thought I'm having some reservations with going the plasti dipping route with the rock rails because they will stepped on a lot while getting in and out. I imagine it will start to peel right away since the rails do protrude out a bit. Thoughts?

Yes the factory rubi rails by Mopar. They do protrude out a little, enough that it is possible to step on them by accident when getting in and out.

I used black textures spray paint when I first got mine, but it has since rubbed off. I would recommend something more heavy duty like bed liner.

For those who repainted your rock rails did you sand the surface first or just paint directly over?
