I appreciate you guys saying this. The short antenna I bought from AntennaX is really aweful, and yes, the AM station reception is virtually non-existent now with this stubby "billit" antenna.

Paleh0rse, did you just get the wrong adapter to begin with?

Just put mine on, pretty big gap, think I need to torque it more.

Not sure I'm down with grabbing the plastic part with anything like channel locks though ....

Thanks ...

Make sure you screw in the little metal threaded piece by itself first, then the middle black piece, then the antenna... doing it this way went a lot smoother than trying to screw in the entire thing at once -- and even on my initial defective adapter, it reduced the gap by half.

I bought one of your 14" Billet type antennas, and while the reception is pretty good (the major am station I listen to is fairly close) there is a whistle tone that starts out as a low pitch and gradually over a two minute climb hits a pretty high note then dissipates.... only to start again.
Do the 13" off road antennas have a better or stronger range? If so I may get one.
I have put the Jeep mast back on and the whistle has gone away.

I've decided against any "stubby" type antenna for the reasons so many have stated. I am prepping my stock and painting it black.. Trying that first any how. GM has black antennas for trucks. Ford too I think. Any one try an antenna from GM or Ford to see if it will screw in?

I can absolutely guarantee they will screw in to a GM or Ford. You could always try the wreckers as well, maybe something out of a Packard....Nash Rambler?

I installed mine today and had the same question about the gap. The packaging does not come with any instructions on installing the adapter first. I did not want to scar the antenna using pliers so I tightened as much as I could. I will try reinstall using the info from the forum. Thanks for the info.

I have the 15" and no issues on build quality ...I have a slight reception issue on a few stations way out in the boonies only but not a big deal for me!

I plasti-dipped mine...but it looks like I need to get my radio reset/flashed, so I can't tell if it made a difference in reception.
