From looking into FM reception a bit, it seems that the stock antenna is longer than ideal for the mid FM band (mine is 35 inches). Has anyone tried shortening it down to around 29 to 32 inches? Maybe the cowl reduces the effective length?

Still won't keep it from whacking and chipping my freedom panel and windshield area, though...

Might slip some thick-wall 1/8 vacuum tubing over it to see it that works or if it just flops around more. (or whistle like crazy on the highway).

Got an Antenna X 14 inch off Amazon for under $20., and it looks good. Checked the reception and didn't notice any difference.

That's different than the US version... ours are spiral, and silver... I cut mine down and painted it too, but the replacement from AntennaX is way better.

So is mine and I have a Canadian Jeep. I have the replacement coming. If it works well I'll put the old one for sale online (I can sell almost anything it seems).

I definitely don't want a Canadian flag on my Jeep... maybe if I was in the military.

Yup, it was spiral and silver. I just put some black heat shrink over it and Voila!

Just an update i had to ditch the hidden antenna it didn't work well enough for me. I loved the look of no external antenna so i extended the cable to the right rear and tucked the oem antenna into the rollbar padding. I grounded it at the sub enclosure top bolt and it works great. I used some RG6 "catv" cable and a male antenna pin connector from radio shack. Also needed a metra adapter to the stock jeep radio. I soldered the connections for longevity/vibration. I read nothing works as well as a 32 inch mast and apparently that is so. Except for the new badge I'm into it for about $12.

Definitely more than unscrewing and screwing in a stubby, but I like these type of projects. Inexpensive customization. I have decent mechanical skills I was done in about an hour.

Great but, I'm sure you'll put something tasteless on it that many others would definitely 'not' have on theirs either.

Nope, nothing tasteless would go on mine. Shorty antenna, KC lights, wheels & tires, cat back exhaust... that's about it.

Got mine put on now too. I had to replace mine because it went missing when I had the dummy dings fixed on the fenders from the doors over opening when Chrysler replaced my heater core.... love the way it looks.

Mine is on order. I plan on NOT putting loctite on the threads or over tightening it. As I learned in my VW days, nothing worse then going out to your car and seeing your roof dented and your antenna screwed up from someone's unsuccessful attempt at stealing it. I would rather just go buy another. My $0.02.

I'm taking my 13" shorty off today and putting the stock antenna back on, since I switched the signal has been noticeably worse. I want to switch back for a bit to be sure that it is the new antenna that caused the drop in quality; if it is, I'm going to be looking for a plan B. I love the look of the stubby but I like listening to the radio, and right now this isn't working for me.

I think it all depends on your location... my reception is so/so with my long one so I don't think it'll get worse with the short one (signals are strong - overloading I think). Stations are within 1-15 miles away. Reception is better when I drive out to my parents house, about 20 miles farther away.

I think my reception will improve where I live. I bought the 14" black billet, still waiting on it to come in.

I am going to try a home made 5/8 wave dipole (37 11/16" long) in the rollbar padding and see how that goes.

Let us know how that goes... interested in this type of stuff. Maybe you'll pull in FM from 100 miles away

Instead of spending money on a shorty, I just Plasti Dipped mine black. :-D

My Jeep came with the stubby on but if I had the stock one I would put it on too. Though I don't know if the stock is better since I never had one but I would imagine it would be. This one sucks. Definitely could be my location but all stock vehicles I drive in have a ton of channels. With this one on my Jeep I barely get 25%.

Should be no problem fitting the stocker i believe is 34". I mounted it at the base of the roll bar in rear and it bent up around the curve. I have a 2dr. Looks so much cleaner on passenger fender. My son commented , "what did you do I don't see anything different". What type of cable are you going to use? I thought about mounting it behind sub and up under padding to keep it straight, but it worked great as is so didn't bother any further. Plus I didn't want to modify the base of the stock antenna to make it any narrower in case someone will put it back to stock location later. My other thoughts/option was to put a power antenna in the stock spare tire carrier.

Installed the stubby 13" from Antenna_X, fits perfectly, no issues with reception in the city.

I have the same one, and it looks and works great! I also found a 3" one somewhere. But, I was reluctant to try that one.

Looks great! Reception is good (will test more when I drive out of town) as I can get all my stations clearly in my garage. Antenna is black like my vehicle. Lots of glare in first photo. Stock antenna measures 35" right down to the base, this one is 14". Pretty happy. Took 8 working days to get it from the US which is pretty standard.
