Thanks. I have one, too. What I wondered was if the antenna under the rubber coating was a whip antenna or a coiled 'rubber ducky' antenna. Rubber duckies bring in signals better than whips of the same length, and the Off-Road AntennaX 13" seems fat enough to be a rubber ducky.

we use to sell a rubber one with a coil in the base but our new design in the past few years no longer has it--reception stayed the same

I just took the time to read completely through the entire thread. I saw a lot of opinion about reception but no physics applied or objective measurements. As a ham radio operator, I know that there are a few antennas that provide optimum reception with no tricks like capacitive top loading or inductive bottom loading. Typically we use 1/4 wave whips or possibly 5/8 wave if space is available and that way there is no loading and no signal reduction.

A 1/4 wavelength for the middle of the FM band is 30 inches. I haven't gone out and measured the length of mine but if I were making an antenna for 98MHz I would start with 30 inches. Then I would use an antenna analyzer to verify that the antenna is cut to the right length and adjust the length from there.

Any antenna that shortens the length from the 1/4 wave distance is a compromise and WILL result in less signal than that compared to the 1/4 wave. This is physical science, not opinion.

The shorter antennas will APPEAR to have no effect on signals close in the the receiver and there is good reason for this. In FM the information is in the frequency shift of the transmitted signal. In an FM receiver there is a circuit known as a limiter and just before the limiter is signal amplification. The signal is amplified to the point that the limiter then "clips" the top and bottom of the received sine wave. This reduces any possible noise that may be generated by the effect of amplitude differences. So when close to the transmitted signal and the limiter is doing its job, the reproduced audio will be high fidelity. As you travel away from the transmitted station and the limiter can no longer provide limiting to the received signal, the effects of audio distortion on the received signal by fading will then become noticeable. This will happen sooner with antennas that are shorter than 1/4 wave. This is why folks who live out in the sticks are reporting that they have presets that no longer work.

This is the long of it if you are interested. My stock antenna stays put until it gets yanked off by the brush on the trail or some other malady and then will be replaced with another stock antenna. I don't use the built in Sirius satellite reception on the radio and love listening to certain FM radio stations. Some are weak to begin with so around town, I need good reception on FM.

Anyone who tells you the reception is just as good with a shorty is ignoring physical science.....trust me on this one.

BTW, Jimbo.....you got a design on that aluminum hat antenna that you mentioned earlier in the thread?

It sounded interesting. May want to do some measurements on it

just ordered my off-road antenna today. Now all i need is a jeep. (waiting on delivery)

oh and in regards to Jk'n - agreed.

I am a volunteer search and rescue member, and we have our stubby antennas for our radios general use, and then when we are stopped for any length of time or we need more reception we have a longer metal adjustable antenna that we can swap out and it makes a huge difference. Unfortunately we can't hike with it, as it would snap off, and having a 30 inch metal antenna sticking off you while hiking would be challenging. :-)

However, for my jeep, i like the stubby - it looks cool. I listen to MP3's most of the time anyway.

I will probably have another long antenna installed for my VHF radio, not much i can do about that though.

LOL - I know Sjeupie posted this a long time back but I just read it, and yes, I have an excel spread sheet for future mods too.
Didn't think of it but yes, I guess it is kind of geeky, but then again, what's wrong with that?

Heard good things, and if it sucks, they all have return policies. Plus, for under 20 bucks, it's worth it. Just do it!

Go to AntennaX, get the black, flex, stubby! I did and am DAMN pleased with it, particularly in the Mtn's with low-hanging branches

Just installed it myself. Love it. No difference in reception at all.

I started with an 8", and I did lose reception to the point that even the stronger FM stations were not received well enough to listen to. The AM was non-existent. [I live in South Jersey, these are Philly stations.] Returned it in unused condition and got refund no problem.

Got 13" from Antenna X and it works 90% better than the shorter stubby I tried. The FM stations are just about as good as with the stock antenna (slight drop in reception but not enough to return the product over). KYW 1060 AM is scratchy but comes in enough that I can hear it if need be.

I haven't had the Jeep up closer to the city yet so this may not be any problem at all for folks who live in "civilization" aka the 'burbs. I'm out in the boonies a bit.

Given how much better the Antenna X 13" looks, I'll take the slight drop in reception. I kept my stock antenna in the garage in case I ever have cause to throw it back on.

The stock antenna got amazing long range AM reception for me. But, it kept catching branches on trails and twanging around wildly.

So, I got the AntennaX 13" Off Road stubby. No more catching in branches, but, lost a lot of reception quality/distance.

So, I cut off the stock antenna to 22", soldered the ball back back on the end, and painted with Rustoleum flat black. Reception is back, and no twanging in the branches, and looks better, IMO.

Done with antennas......

I'm almost glad I encountered the twanging effect with the radio antenna before I decided to mount my CB antenna. Now I'm mounting my CB antenna low and in the rear to avoid that.

Stubbys rule. Mine has been great in the woods. I noticed that long range reception is less than the stock antenna, but that's completely expected when you reduce the antenna length and I listen to Sirius anyway.

As a precaution I stashed the stock antenna under the carpet in the back, however.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the stock antenna is great to use as a depth gauge for fording in a pinch.
