Replaced JK Manual Shifter Knobs

I Just replaced the crappy, chrome plated, manual shift knobs on my 2011 JK with the husrt/billard ball style knobs I purchased from eBay (both the shifter and transfer case knobs...came as a matching set). Always preferred the hurst style...no matter how you hold them, they are still round.

Removing the stock was not as bad as I thought. Removed the round bottom trim, removed the top trip (pryed it off), and then I used a locking vise grip and just pulled the rest off while wiggling it (pulled right off with without too much force).

Here are some pics:

After I pryed off the bottom ring and the top trim:

After the stock knobs are off, this is what the shafts look like:

All the stock knobs in pieces:

The new knobs and hardware that came with them:

After the install of the new knobs....feels much better now:

After making my antenna shorter, this is the mod I am after.
For a n00b like me, pictures are invaluable!
Thank you very much!

knob removal

I got similar ones off ebay. Flame black and red. Love them.

Knob removal on the 2011 is as easy as using a crescent wrench slightly open just below the knob and hitting it upward sharply with a mallet. Knob comes off in one piece. You do not have to disassemble the knob. Works for transfer case as well.

Will add pictures later.

Make sure you put a towel or something over the knob for added weight. I assumed it would take a little muscle and was over zealous with the amount of force I used. Damn took my eye out.

I did mine in pieces. After taking the bottom and top rings off, it was easier to grab with a vise grip and it came off relatively easy...just had to wiggle a bit while pulling and it came off.

The stock knobs are going in the trash now.

Looks great taegee! Do you mind uploading a couple of additional photos? I am thinking of ordering the white ones and would like to see the shift knobs from the side and also how much of the adapter is exposed. Do you notice the overall height being taller or shorter than stock and are they heavy like a pool ball or more hollow feeling?

Love the old school look.

Thanks!

Will try to take some additional shots when I can. There is a small tab at the bottom where the 3 set screws are used to secure the knob. Practically unnoticeable on the transfer case but you can see a small part of it on the shift knob and sometimes feel the tab during shifting, but I still prefer these over the stock...these just feel better. They are not too heavy (not as heavy as the billard balls...I don't think these are billard ball size...these are only 2-1/8" while a standard billiard ball is 2-1/4"..the transfer case knob is even smaller)...Just enough where you can feel the weight but not too overbearing and heavy.

Hey JKbudman,

Here are a souple of closeups of the knobs.

Shifter Knob:

Transfer case Knob:

I didn't notice any change in the overall height difference...these just feels right when shifting....the stock knobs just didn't feel right with the egg shape (I also didn't like that stupid chrome look either). The balls are solid except for the hole drilled into it on the bottom for the shaft. It has a solid feel to it without being too heavy. If you've had any hurst shift knobs before, these are about the same.

Hope this helps.

About the same. the stock knobs are shaped like an egg (oval), but the top of the shifter shaft (post) lies just under the top of the stock knob. The billiard ball isn't drilled all the way throught either so it rests just above the top of the shaft. I think they are about the same...if not, the difference is so small I can't notice it. The stock knob just looks longer because of the oval shape but it also covers more of the shaft...so it's not necessarily higher.

You're knob may be a bit different depending on how it is cut inside for the shaft (how deep the shaft hole is cut). You're baseball is also larger in diameter too, I think. Still shouldn' make too much of a height difference (probably less than an inch, at most).

That looks like the set from SickSpeed (they sell on ebay). I'm thinking of getting them for my white jku 2012. But thinking of a bigger size and have looked at another shop that sells more custom stuff. Anyone buy from 'hot rod shift knob'? Thanks!

I can live with the knob for now....what I am looking for a longer shift lever. 6 foot tall, seat all the way back makes the reach a little uncomfortable at times. I've looked on the popular sites....any other suggestions?

Here's mine. Nostalgia Shift knob I had painted body color, then had the JP Freek emblem airbrushed and cleared over.

Totally awesome knobs. Very professional with the [laser?] engraving. You need to change your online name to something like 'lotsafriends' tho.

I recently purchased an 8 Ball replacement for my shifter. It doesn't come w/ any hardware, so I'm assuming I can press it on and it will stay put when put on. Yes?

All of these replacements look sweet!!
