Replacing the 730n with aftermarket stuff

Or am I. I used to be in the car audio business many many years ago. I could build a killer system that sounded good and could blow up the decibel meters. So I am attempted to install a new system in my 2013 Sahara. Im not building a competition grade system but something that sounds better than stock and has a little kick to it.

The first step is finding the right head unit. I started with the Alpine ICS-X7hd. Its a nice looking unit but functionally is close to useless. It is slow and no way to get navigation on it unless I have a Droid..which is not happening. I pulled it out and promptly shipped it back to Crutchfield.

Next round (I figured I would step it up a little) I got the Kenwood DNX890. This is a much nicer unit but still is very buggy. My iphone will pair to it but phone calls will not go through the speakers. It makes the call but no sound. Same thing with bluetooth streaming audio. I have reset the system and tried to reconfigure with the same results.

I had similar results with Alpine INE-W927 and Pioneer AVIC-Z150. I did not install these units but spent several hours going over the features that I know I would use including pairing of the iphone....and they all are pretty disappointing.

Both the Alpine and Kenwood system sound much better than the 730n but the 730n is functionally a much better radio than any of the high end units from Kenwood, Alpine or Pioneer. Too bad the 730n sounds like everyone is singing through a tin can. The factory speakers actually are not horrible when hooked up to a good audio source. I am going to keep working on the Kenwood until I have had enough, but I am tempted to stick the stock unit back in and just be done with it.

Im done with my rant for now...just had to get that off my chest.

I've got a sport and was thinking about getting a 730n. Do you know if it has an HD tuner? I can't seem to find anything that says it does or does not have one.

I put a Kenwood DNX6190HD in my 2013 JKU and it works great. I have a cheep flip phone (work phone) and it paired just fine. My son's iphone 5 paired up with it too. Everything so far is working just as it should but it's only been in for 2 weeks.

Have you checked whether you can be heard by the other end when you make a phone call via Bluetooth? This will tell you whether it's an issue with the connection or the output.

Also, iPhones are a pain in the arse to work with. I've had all manner of problems connecting my wife's iPhone to several different head units, both factory and aftermarket, in three different vehicles.

Other end cannot hear me but Siri eyes free works. I have had the iPhone 5 since it came out and have never had pairing issues with it. I travel for a living and it has been paired to many rental cars.

DNX890 issues resolved. Default settings for bluetooth go to front speakers and the PAC to OEM amp is rear channels only. (yep..I can take the idiot award...LOL) Now I get to recover this boondoggle and prepare to add the JL Audio 5 channel amp and some speakers and this thing should rock pretty good.

So the Kenwood sound much better than the factory head unit, but I still stand behind what i said earlier. The 730N functionally is a much better radio than any of the after market radios I have messed with, it just doesn't sound as good.
