rhb+chr550+reverse cam w/ pics

ok so i searched high and low on how to instal a lockpick and a reverse camera in a 2011 jku 4dr and could not find this anywhere..so i decided to do it myself and the right way..

i will show more pics than describing things so if you have questions feel free to ask away..

ok i started by buying a reverse/color/night vision camera and the chr550..

i then took a 5 gallon paintbucket lid and cut a piece to fit the tire carrier,,i then alighned it,marked holes and cut..then i cut a hole for the camera and sealed it in with weather tape..until i got this.

i then instaled it behind the spare running the wires behind the carrier and into the rubber plug behind carrier (plug had to be sliced to fit wires through, and i ended up with this here.

(after these photos i removed tire again and masked the red with a black electrical tape and looked much better.

then i opened the rear gate and removed the black piece of plastic on the door and made a hook to fish my cables through the hole behind plastic like so.

i then connected my power cable and my video cable to the ends comming from door and tucked the connectors back inside the door like so.

then i ran my cables along the third brake light cables and ziptied them together

then i removed my passenger tailight and ran my power wire through where the door catch arm is.

after disconnecting the taillight i snipped the white wire with grey stripe(reverse wire) and the black wire(ground)

i then reached through hole where light was to find power and ground for camera, then pull them through,,,and then connected everything back together like so.

i then ran my video wire along the passenger side tucking it away nicely to not be seen.

and for the lockpick, its definetly plug and play,,i ran my wires from behind my deck and into the rear area of the glove box and up and over and installed the pick to the back wall of glove box like so..

everything works like a charm with factory functioning camera that will automaticaly turn on in reverse..

feel free to ask any questions...and hope this helps someone out..

thanks man,,,it was pretty simple, hardest part being figuring out where to run all my wires to give it a factory look. but everything is stashed away and cant see a thing...
bigest reason for me doing the right up was because i was so frustrated with not being able to find it myself...
all i could find was wireless cameras,,garb if u ask me,,or someone had mounted one on the back window leaving the camera useless with top removed,or not being able to remove the top,,so this way you can remove the top or whetever and the spare has nothing to do with it either so changing a tire would be a breeze also,,i kept all of this in mind as i was figuring it out,,so no hopefuly someone else wont have to,,lol..

You can't run direct to battery, with just the switch--two much current-wait till your light package comes in and you'll probably have everything needed !!

Good luck -

Seelye,

Great work so I guess the Lock pick will work on the 2011, did it free up the nav and video while driving. Do you have the DVD player as well in your unit? Just curious, so the kids can watch a dvd while I do the driving.

Again great work, and yes I will be doing the lights on windshield as my first light weight mod.

doc,,yep,it unlocked everything,,also new features opened,,including VEC,TV,and AUX.
not exactly sure what they do yet except the aux. is an ipod input cable to the lockpick that lets you have full control of ipod through HU and wheel controls..

everything worked perfect,no cutting wires or anything...

the chr550 comes with 4 harness' the back of your deck has a space for 2 but only one is in there...so you plug the 2 harness' into the back of the deck and then the original grey one goes into the grey side of the lockpick harness',,then there is one more harness,,and it is left open,,nothing goes into it.....this had me so frustrated because i thought i was missing something but after hooking it up like mentioned,,it unlocked everything without a problem..
its a pretty expensive piece of equipment,,but my biggest reason for doing this is because i make trips from va to ny often and i never pay attention to the directions, therefore changing the nav on the fly is something huge for me,,had they done this from the factory,i probably wouldnt care about the dvd playing in motion,,but as long as it comes with the pick,i wont argue either..i'd say as long as you can aford it,its a good thing to have,,,,and like mentioned in many places,,,"you should be able to have total control over something you paid soo much money for"..

and also trust me when i say if you buy the pick, your money will be well spent..

you'll feel like you own your jeep again

Thanks for the camera info. Just wondering- do you have to uninstall this before taking it back to the dealer for service? Will it void the RHB warranty?

^ Oops.

To OP, your install looks great. Very well written up. I can't use it, unless I want to get a new NAV unit, though.

One thing I noticed, is that it looks like you have a door stop on the rear gate. Is that stock on a 2011? I wonder if it can be retrofitted on a 2010?

Awesome looking install and just what I needed to pull the trigger on something I've been thinking about!

Question though... Is your camera just taped to the paint bucket lid, or how did you secure it. I really think your install rocks!

under the weather tape there is 2 hinges that secure the camera to the lid plus i used silicone to seal the whole outside and the weather tape for extra seal,,and then i used electrical tape to hide the weather tape,,,lol..its quite secure and waterproof

to tell you the truth i have no idea as i do most repairs myself but if something major was to happen,i never had to splice any wires,so i could easily uninstall and take to dealer no problem.

i just recently put a back up cam in my wife's 4 dr jk and i slapped it on the rear license plate . i'm not really thrilled with the way it looks and may end up using your method. i'm just not looking forward to taking it all apart and redoing the whole thing. also, with the cam i got from coastal etech the image is mirrored and i cannot find the install guide. i know that eventually i'll figure out how to have it not mirrored but maybe one of you guys can point me in the right direction. i recall something having to be grounded for a mirror image but i cannot for the life of me remember the specifics.

i forgot which mygig locpick i put in the jeep.....i noticed yours is a bit different. the COD Black Ops jeep came with an RHB(?) head unit.

have you tried activating the cam while you're driving? it's pretty cool...just tap the U-Connect button a couple of times and violá you can see what's behind you. you turn it off the same way you turn it on.

I thought about doing this camera setup, but wanted to place camera under the Jeep (front differential area) so I can see how close rocks are and get better judgment when rock crawling.
