Question Right stuff, right price?

Hello, I'm currently looking at purchasing a Wrangler Unlimited and figured I list my options etc to see if I'm missing anything or getting something that's simply not worth it.

Barring waiting for a 2014, another topic...

Sahara
Automatic (other car is a stick)
24g package
Anti-spin dif
Trailer tow group (have nothing to tow, yet)
Connectivity group
Heated seats (why not)
AC w/auto controls (want filter)
Supplemental side air bags
3-piece body color hard top (want white to reflect heat if my pups are left in for a few)

Use, no off-roading, but someday want to plow my driveway.

Current price I've gotten is $34K

Previous Jeeps 83 CJ7, 95 Grand Cherokee.

You should get the 3.73 gears, they are included with the max tow package. You can add the tow hitch yourself cheaper if you want to save a fist full of dollars but you will want the 3.73s.

Good information now reading about these 3.73s

But being as worried as a Jeep owner can be about MPG, still the 3.73s?

If you are driving around town and not on 55-60 mph highways the 3.73's will be better. I have a '12 manual with the 3.73's and am getting 20-21 mpg's. I really wish I could have gotten the 4.10's in my sport.

If you are looking at a 4 door, bite the bullet and get the 3.73's. I hate my fuel economy (14 mpg in winter daily driving...very little highway...stock. Lots of remote start does not help).

I really wanted 3.21's for better fuel economy, but if you get 3.21's on the 4 door, Chrysler limits to tow rating to 2000 pounds. So 3.73's it is.

The manuals do much better with 3.73's than the auto's.

What, if anything, do you plan to tow? I just bought a 13 JKUR w/3.73's and my only regret is getting the factory tow package. You only get 4 pin wiring and a class 2 hitch, which is a frickin' ripoff for what they charge you. For the same price you could have the dealer add a better hitch and 7 pin wiring with a 4 pin adapter so you could go either way.

Also remember the 3.21's have a much lower towing capacity. Unless you plan on doing a whole lot of driving at 70 mph and not towing anything substantial, get the 3.73's.

Remote start is nice if you are in an area where it gets cold.

Re: body colored hard top. I just wonder if those who have them get freaked out taking the panels out? I am pretty hard on my freedom panels. Just a thought.

Get the 3.73's, you'll never regret it. And, it's a Jeep, you're not buying it for gas mileage.

I'm not personally fond of the body color hard top. That money could be used for a lot of other things in my opinion.

This is exactly what I needed to know the optional gearing 3.21 vs. 3.73 it didn't even come to mind!

Since I'll be ordering I wan to get things right.

I'm sticking with the automatic and 99% of the time I do highway driving t/from work 30 mile commute both ways. On weekends I'll do limited unpaved roads, the truth be known any car driven carefully could do.

I'll probably never tow, figure tow pkg (simple) just in case but as advised will most likely strike and add myself if I have to.

But what I want to do is plow my 400' driveway.

So no hard core off roading, lot of highway, will plow, 3.21 or 3.73 keeping in mind gas prices. If the 3.73's offer a slightly lower MPG and all the pros of get'up and go, passing, etc. I'm leaning towards the 3.73s.

Side question, gas goes to $6 a gallon (yikes!) could one with 3.73 put say an inch larger tires and gain MPG?

I would assume the larger wheels would be heavier.
What you would gain in highway mpg, would be lost in city driving. It would probably be a net gain.

Let me ask since it is harder going to 3.73 from a 3.21 due to carrier, is it harder going to 3.21 from a 3.73?

I know this is nuts but figured I'd ask.

I had the opportunity to drive two JKUs today, 2.31 and a 3.73.
My personal observations were that the 3.73 felt smoother around town driving and had more pep as expected. But I could also see why it could consume more gas in my mind as the RPM came easy.
On the highway I had concern since it I was turning around 2,500 RPMs keep it at 70 MPM were as the 3.21 stayed a nice to me 2,000 RPMs.
Since I drive 99% highway, and yes I know it’s a Wrangler, etc. MPG is a concern to me. No off roading, no towing. Looking at it as a family daily driver, and expenses I decided on the 3.21s.
PS: have to Monday morning to change my mind.

X2 have a 13 sport with 3.73. Im averaging about 20.4 with a 6 speed.

i just ran the numbers and $34,000 puts you at just about 2% under invoice...thats respectable
