Rims

I have tried to use the search function, but came up unsuccessful.

Can anyone describe the advantages of using a smaller rim as compaired to a larger one? I am definately buying new rims/tires before it gets warm out. I have chosen what type of rim I want, but it comes is various sizes. I am deciding between a 16x8 (with 4.03 backspacing) or a 17x9 (with 4.5 backspacing). Obviously the 17x9 is wider, but I don't plan on getting a tire over 285. Will a 285 tire fit around a 16x8 rim? If so, is there any of advantages of the 17x9 besides looks? I know a smaller rim with more rubber around it will be better for offroading.

Thanks for the help.

Smaller wheel = less $ for tires and 285 will fit 16x8.

Yeah, what he said..^^ Many guys are finding that they can get 16" wheels and tires for nearly the same money as 17" tires alone...

Smaller wheel and bigger tire equals taller sidewall. Which equals more rubber between obstacles and metal wheel. I have 18's, but I won't be keeping them.

Thanks everybody. I just purchased the Dick Cepek 16x8 DC2 wheels with 4 inch backspacing. I think they look awesome, and can't wait to get tires mounted on them. I am going blind looking at all the tire choices and really like the Duratracs MT's with Kevlar, but I don't know.

I did last year.... Mailed them both the same day. I think that the TL rebate is not considered the same as the GY rebate, so it works. Idk, but I got $140 back in rebate checks when I bought my Duratracs...

Good choice on the 16x8s

I have 16x8 with 285/75-16 Cooper STTs. My Jeep came with 18s; I've made my investment back several times over already.

How do you get this Treadlightly discount? I have seen several people referring to it, but no directions on how to get it?

Hilldweller - I think your rig looks awesome!. I have the same bumper, and want the same fogs. I see what you mean about the investment paying itself back. Spacers costs between $100-$150, plus the same tires I am looking at (Goodyear Duratracs MT/R's with Kevlar) are significantly more expensive for 18in wheels. I figure that by the second set of tires, the total cost of both options will be just about the same. After that I think I will save $$ in the long-run. Saving money is great, but the fact that I will have more rubber between me and the ground with a rim that I think looks way cooler. I figure, why not...

It's a win-win, all righty.

Treadlightly discount goes to Treadlightly members; just join and they'll send you the info.
