Roll Cage Options

Hello all,

I looking to enhance the safety of my JK by upgrading the roll cage. There are two options that I am interested in.

One is a weld in unit front and rear by Synergy Suspentions for $700.00, $768.00 if I go with the added dash bar (I have no idea what it does. Camera mount?) If I go this route I plan on welding it in myself so there will be no installation cost. My main concern with this unit is that the downtubes to the floorboards will pass in front of the speaker and AC gasper on each side of the dash installation and it will also limit the space I would have to get my long legs in and out (pics can be seen in the installation instruction PDF). My rig is also my daily driver and I am kind of thinking that this set up is more for pure off-road use.

The other is a bolt in kit by Poison Spyder for $849.00 and is front only. No installation cost either as I will install myself. The advantage I can see in this kit is that instead of downtubes going down to the floorboards, they use steel plate that passes outboard of the dash installation between the dash and door(There is no installation PDF, so I am assuming this by the photos). The downsides are cost and the fact that it is front only. I hear good things about Poison Spyder products in general, but I am wondering if this cage would be something I can count on in the event of a roll. I am attracted to this cage because it looks like it would be more daily driver friendly. I also imagine that painting the bolt in kit would be easier too.

Any opinions or real life experiences out there to help me with my decision are greatly appreciated.

Have you considered the OR-FAB sport cage?

Hmm, I haven't. Looks a lot like the poison spyder one, but about $250 cheaper. Do you have one installed in your rig? Happy with it?

Not yet but it is on my "to do" list. OR-FAB makes super high quality products.

There is optional floor brackets for this cage too.

Thank you everyone for all of the replies. I have been researching this to death over the past week and you have all given me some good alternatives.

I am leaning towards the poison spyder cage. It is a little bit expensive, but I like what they are selling. They have a good description of their design and why they engineered it that way. It sounds like they really went for maximum strength. If you select the link below and scroll down halfway down the page, they explain the design pretty well.

Jeep JK Trail Cage Kits | Jeep JKJ Roll Bar | Jeep JK Roll Cage | Poison Spyder Customs

I really want a cage that goes down to the floor and I'm not too hot on the welded unit so I am kind of torn between the OR-Fab and the Poison Spyder. The OR-Fab is nice because of price and it comes painted where the P.Spyder one I would have the added expense of getting it powder coated.

I'll let everyone know what I do and will be sure to share pics. Thanks again!

I'm thinking of a roll cage if for no other reason than this.

Not sure it would have helped in that one. That Jeep is split down the middle.

Unless you're wearing a five point harness and helmet - all of the time, all of those setups look like they would be more likely to harm you than prevent injury. A head injury from the interior hard surfaces look virtually guaranteed in the event of even a modest crash.

This thread reminds me of the recent thread on performance air filters (K&N), that are designed for racing, and have mostly negative real world results.

Padding kits are available if desired.

My Rockhard was delivered about 30 mins ago. I just opened up the box.

Really??? You think that the windshild caving in and smashing you is safer then having it reinforced. I have hit my head pretty damn had on the stock part of the "cage" a few times while doing stupid stuff. But never has my head come close to the aftermarket sport cage.

Well yes, really. Especially the protruding grab handles.

For an off road, slow motion roll over - give me an extra roll cage! But in a traffic accident, no thanks. My JKR has every air bag available.

Lots of stuff available on the general subject on the web, quick check finds similar discussion on a different forum : WHY are roll cages and racing harnesses illigal - S2KI Honda S2000 Forums

Not posting this to argue with you, just providing a different perspective.

Have you ever seen photos of the windshild of a JK that has rolled on the highway? Sometimes they smash all the way down to the dash. Airbags are not going to help that.

The handles are no where near your head, no way would you hit your head on it. (I can't even reach out and grab them with my hands when sitting back in the seat) Well unless you are not wearing a seatbelt. If you are running down the highway without a seatbelt on and get thrown into the cage it was because you are a dumb ass not because the cage was in the way.

If you dont like them fine, but there is no since trying to lead people into believing that it is dangerous to have extra protection. This is a mod that is mostly done by people who believe they need it. It is jot like all the mall crawlers are doing it to look cool.

Add a HANS device to the helmet and 5 pt. harness. Read the thoughtful comments of guys racing 911's. And you can bet these guys are belted in. It's not that I don't like them, it's just a comment regarding the increasing probability of of mortal injury in a traffic accident if your head comes into contact with anything hard. Again, low speed roll over off road is an entirely different risk than a high speed highway collision or roll over.
