roof leak... is it fixed with 2012 models? i mean hard tops?

Dear Owners

My Wife had serious problem with fried computer on audi Q7. We took to the dealer and found water somehow got its way into computer compartment right by the passenger seat console. after thoroughly checked, it was a leak (overflow) of the drain pipe being blocked by debries.
Now that i am considering 2012 Jeep wrangler unlimited, my wife is somewhat sceptical about the removalable top and possible leak. we can always justify that this rig is built for rough and toughs but nobody wants water dripping down on you during long drive, it's like a chinese torture, and having to fry or corrode parts in the long run...

oh by the way, what is the death wobble? please say this will not happen with stock items?

so please share your thoughts and experiences with hardtop leak

Regards Gantulga

We test drove a new 2012 JKU last month and it leaked.... We were not pleased. We drove a second one and the top whistled at about 35 mph...both hard tops. I would not worry about death wobble but I would check out the vehicle on a rainy day prior to purchase. Our 2010 (soft top) has not leaked at all. We will probably hold off for a 2013.

Here's some info on 2012 leaks: http://www.wranglerforum.com/f33/doe...ak-106184.html.

You should read the opening few posts of the death wobble thread linked above as well.

The bottom line on these issues is that with large, removable, manual, relatively inexpensive, interchangeable (hard/soft) tops seated on removable doors and a foldable windshield, leaks are always going to be a risk. Nothing magic happened in 2012 to fix this. Death wobble is an inherent risk of a solid front axle, though it is exceedingly rare especially if left stock. If it arises, it can be handled.

I never had any roof leaks on my 09 JKU Sahara hard top. Too early to tell on the 2012 yet.

3K+ on my 2012 and at the risk of jinxing myself 3 car wash runs a few rain storms and none of the stuff mentioned above has happened. My biggest problem is all I want to do is drive it places. You find with most message boards about any product most people come looking for solutions to problems they are having or information about modifications.
You just don't see too many threads started about:
My Freedom Tops aren't leaking, the gaskets were all properly placed during manufacturing, I've tried taking them off 3 or 4 times thought maybe I had pinched the gasket tightening it down but I hosed it down with a pressure washer and nope dang thing is still water tight!

I agree, i think i will soon go car problem-phobic with the phase i am researching...
leak was something cost us quite a fortune so i am not taking my second chance.

Already 12k miles on my 2012 and no leaks, whistling, etc despite the top and doors being off multiple times.

But, as was already alluded to, a luxury SUV these are not - anytime there are removable tops/doors involved, there will always be a risk of a leak.

I have no idea what an Audi Q7 is, nor do I care. The Wrangler is an open top vehicle that can be equipped with either a hard top or a soft top. If you're not careful about how you put them on, they can leak. The Wrangler is water resistant. They are built to get muddy and wet. Many people complain about their Wranglers leaking. I have never heard about one of them complaining that the leak "fried the computer".

You said that your computer was fried because a "drain pipe" was blocked by "debris". Sounds like a user issue to me. How did this debris get there?

i understand, i will not be able to have the vehicle recalled or have dealer change faulty parts as the car will be shipped directly to mongolia. so i don't want to hit my head after something goes bad and google it to know how common the fault was... and finding out the fix is with the warranty and that i cannot benefit since the item is out of country.

about the debries, it is quite dusty here in mongolia and when it rains, it's not that watery, i mean the droplets are not big enough most of the time, so slowly but stadily a layer of wet soil builds up on some bends and quickly dry out. rain water is not enough to wash out the build, it's only matter of time for Q7 drain pipe to clog and overflow... i would have fixed the problem if i knew this problem prior to the incident and proper bulletin was sent.. but was all too late and i could not benefit from the recall since it was not applicable out of the country (US that is)

all these are irrelevant to your jeep knowledge so i would deeply appreciate if you give me some practical ups and downs of wrangler unlimited..

Gotcha. I didn't realize you were the same guy posting from Mongolia. There is no problem with drain pipes on the JK. There are floor plugs that can be easily removed underneath the carpet.

I have done my test drive of Sahara today. so far, i did not find any problem with it. no excess noice or rattle over speed ramps (am i correct?) and some dirt mounds as well...
Nor me and the dealer knew as to why truck just simply slid down from the mound all the way to the base on drive mode me applying full break... i did not hear ABS kick back and felt simply slipped down, we got out of the car and went back to the tracks to see if the tyres actually rolled or slipped. threadmarks... concluding that tyres were indeed spinning at the time of discent. is it normal?
I did not reproduce the discent as the dealer took me straight out of the yard to my home. i will try with MSM which is the real Chrysler jeep dodge dealer.
other than that, i am more confident about the leak and HEATER i was concerned with and my wife seemed to be quite impressed with Jeep Pose...
i will now focus on dealer locating in USA. Paying 49 grands for Sahara seems very expensive to me if i buy from Mongolia.

Damn, that's some tough love. I laughed so hard I spit my water all over my office!
Seriously, my '12 hasn't leaked on drop through rain/snow and car washes. No whistles or wind noise beyond the norm. Frankly, this is one of the tightest vehicles I've driven. My dad's '10 4 dr rubi had a little wind noise, removing and replacing the hard top removed that issue. Just follow the removal and installation steps as outlined by Jeep and you'll be fine.
