Roof rack question

I have a JKU and I've been thinking about bout taking my soft top off and mounting a roof rack on my freedom top. We live in Florida and thinking it would be useful for hauling beach/fishing gear and possibly a couple of surf boards. Any recommedations ? TIA Mike.

Are you looking for just the cross bars or something like a cargo carrier?

I'm nervous about mounting anything on a fiberglass top. But that's just me.
I got a Cargo Master Congo cage and like it a lot.

Holy moly!! roof racks / baskets are on the high dollar side ! I may fab one up out of 3/8" cold roll, angular in the front with a wind deflecter. I wonder about the fibreglass cracking with maybe 6 properly spaced/ shaped mounting feet........... Think I'll post this up in the builders corner forum and see what they think. Thanks for the responces.

I've had my MBRP JK/JKU RACK, on for over three years and it has 16 mounting bolts thru the hardtop, will carry over 700 lbs and 350lbs--Mobile

There is a reason why Garvin/Gobi/Congo... make roof racks that mount to the body. Jimbo (a member here) has a roof mounted rack, and loves his... it looks good too.

I need to be able to stand on mine (set up my tripod and shoot) so really did not feel fiberglass mount was the way to go for me. I have a Garvin Wilderness, and love it. The Freedom panels are easy to remove with the rack in place. To remove the entire top, I have to undo 6 bolts, and tip it back 90 degrees.

I'm particularly leery of drilling into the fiberglass since I live in winter temps that typically range from -20 to +20... the summer temps around 70 - 100. And I transport a lot of art inside... that simply could not get wet.

Ha Ha.... Jimbo beat me to it!

MBRP has pictures of the RACK supporting 5-200lb guys/w no damage to the hardtop-

I've carried over 300lbs on the freeway-

It's all personal choice

You can't get the details from Quadratec, but you can from MBRP.com and the rack doesn't depend on the hardtop for verticle strength--

There are (4) pressed steel stanchions inside the top, that attach to the jeeps tub-

Good luck-

I am leery about drilling/mounting things to my fiberglass hardtop, but I am glad to know it is being done with good results. I am not going to take that path, because most conversations that I have when something is broken start with Mr Usry, we have a problem and I can see that with my luck.

So, on to the roof rack question. Who has what and how do they like them? I looked at Smittybilt, they don't have one listed on their site for a 2012 Wrangler Unlimited but Extremeterrain.com says its ready and let me know when I am ready to order. I also looked at GOBIRACK which is pricey, but I am leaning towards them at the moment, SRC has one...I want quality, versatility, and not to drill into my body or hardtop. I will weigh all that against price.

I am going to keep going through the forums, but this thread started today and is relevant to my question, so I went ahead and asked.

Thanks!
