Roof Racks

I have a 2013 Sahara Unlimited. Wanting to put roof rack and kayak carrier on top using the drip rails system from Thule. Sounds good, but I have had some feedback from users that say the rails are not strong enough, and there is a chance they may snap off. The kayak weighs approx. 84lbs. I know there are other systems out there e.g bolt on frame racks and bolt on roof racks but I prefer this system. Has anyone heard of this problem and if you have any other options, would like to hear from you.

I've got a brand new (to me) kayak and I'm still trying to figure out how to carry it...

I am very interested in this too. I have a platform rack that I made for my 80 series Land Cruiser that used the Thule rain gutter mount feet. I had myself, fiance, and my two girls (both under 6) up there for a picnic. The girls loved it and I was hoping to use the same feet and rack on the inbound JKUR. I know that Thule makes a bolt on artificial gutter that could be bolted thru the roof just above the rear window but what to do about the forward mount. My plan was to use the existing gutter above the rear door for the forward mount but they may have to change now. If that isn't going to hold 500 pounds or more, I may have to rethink my mounting plan.

here is a link to the Thule gutter

For those looking for a simple roof rack installation for one or two kayaks, this is the way I chose to do it. It was installed by Rack Attack. It works beautifully, requiring lifting the kayak to waist level. Much better that trying to get it all the to roof level.

Sweet set up man!

I wish I could run that.. I'm struggling to figure out how to run a kayak support with a soft top with the top on. Any ideas?

If I may ask what Thule racks did you use with the Hullavator? Thanks you. Vee

I used the Thule #:
100460 Podium Foot Pack
103101 Podium Foot Kit
110065 65" Square Load Bar - Pair
201138 54" Track w/Bolts (trimmed to 50")
4 - Thule Lock Cores (2 for the feet & 2 for the Hullavator)
Hullavator

Rack Attack will usually price match. REI was having a 10% off sale on all Thule products at the time. So, I mentioned that and they gave me that discount.
