Rough Country Stubby Bumper Conversion

Very simple and, in my opinion, looks great.

Picked up the caps from Chris with JeepAddOns, who got me a very nice price.

Comments and questions welcome.

Thanks Mike-I mentioned before this is going to be my first mod. It's really that easy?

I like the hoop also. Is that the Mopar?

It's really that easy.

The hoop is a Rugged Ridge light bar, and the skid plate below the bumper (hard to see) is by Elevated Offroad.

Check out the ongoing Engo winch thread in the vendor section. They're a sponsoring vendor. Just shoot him a PM and he'll get up with you.

I bought the same kit and was simple. It's a huge improvement clearance and looks wise just gotta get a hoop and a winch.

Looks good Mike

I've been real hesitant to swap out the factory plastic bumpers. With the amount of salt they put on the roads here, most aftermarket steel bumpers that I see are already rusted out. The capped stubby look seems like a great way to clean up the stock bumper.

Looks real good man! Is it pricey? I have a stubby kit in my wish list at Qtec for 64, but it is for the stock bumper. Any difference?

Thanks--rust on aftermarkets? That never occurred to me but is not cool. I'd be spraying the thing with bedliner every week if I started seeing rust.

But these caps definitely scratched my aftermarket bumper itch for a little while.

Very cheap--I got mine shipped for about the price you mentioned.

Mine is also for the stock bumper. Q-tec has the stubby kit by VDP, mine is a competing kit by Rough Country. I personally like the squarer look of the Rough Country caps better than the VDP caps. The VDP set mimics the look of the factory bumper. Check out Rough Country's website and compare it to the VDP caps, and you'll see what I mean.

Crazy easy.

Measure 3.5" from the front creases in the bumper. Draw chalk line. Slice with sawzall. Put on caps. Drill holes in premarked spots. Push included pushpins through holes. Admire your slick tool skills.

Awesome man.. Look very nice! I want to put my lift on first, but I might not wait now... nice photos, such a nicer clean look, and appearance of more room in the front. Best part - no more crap from the front tires on the bumper..

great job!

That looks great MTH! I got several people over the weekend that sent me a PM about ordering them, which I thought was kind of odd as far as several people asking about the same part and then another person sent me a link to the thread and that cleared it up.

Glad you like them and yep, I do offer them pretty cheap.

Looks great Mike! Do you worry about getting in a "fender" bender now without those extra pieces covering your front? I've thought about doing this but I feel like I would be making the protection on the front of my jeep less with it. The flip side is that is looks great and gives you the open look from the front that really shows off the tires and the height of your lift without an aftermarket bumper and more weight.

Nicely done. Now I know who's helping me cut up mine

Have you looked at the ends of your bumper? The extra "plastic" will do nothing to protect the jeep. Kinda like all the Tj owners removing the milkjugs-I see this mod as doing the same as that

Great point. So I think I'll be doing this now and I started looking up videos of Jeeps with it on youtube. Found this one with a silver jeep and now I know I'll be doing it. Great vid too. Enjoy -

Yeah, as mentioned above, there really isn't hardly anything offered by the little plastic ends. There's a little metal you cut through as well, but the reciprocating saw went through it like it was nothing and you could bend the pieces by hand once they were off. I'd rather have the nice clear approach angle offered by the stubby.

Now if they only made a kit for the rear . . .

There's a few members that have done great looking DIY rear chops that really, really need to post write-ups. Ed-de, I'm talking to you.

Definitely! We could have you in and out in 20 minutes.

I think folks who still have their air dam have slightly more work to do (since you've got to chop it too), but for those who have gotten rid of that thing, this hardly even counts as a "project". Slightly more difficult than grab handles perhaps, but that's about it.

How cheap? Cheaper than RC themselves? I think they offer free shipping, if you mention that you are a member here?

Shoot Chris a PM. He asked I not mention price directly simply because RC's price to him sometimes varies, and he can only pass on discounts he's getting. I have no idea whether RC provides free shipping--they wanted $13 absent any mention of this forum--but that's about what my deal worked out to through Chris.
