Rubi as a commuter?

Hey all. My first post. Have learned a lot from all your great posts and have become a bit obsessed with reading. Thanks for hours of fun.

Been wanting a jeep for 25 years. I have a 1-way daily commute of 29 miles and wonder if a Rubicon will be a rougher ride or if the low gear ratios, etc. will beat me up too bad. I think mileage we be the same whether Sport, Sahara or Rubi. Since I've waited so long I really want to go all the way to Rubi up front. Who knows, I may even go off road at some point! Thanks for any guidance.

I commute mine 9 miles less than you and she is fine. I have sat in traffic plenty with no complaints.

It'll be fine for commuting, the newer Jeeps are decent on the road compared to older ones. But the gas mileage may be another story depending on what you drive now.

It's a little rough at first but once you get used to it, it's pretty smooth. The lower gear ratio will hurt MPG but not too much.

Enjoy your new Rubi!

And believe it or not - I'm avg'ing 17.9 to 18.1 mpg depending on how much local driving I'm doing.

I used to commute my YJ 45 miles each way 3 times a week and never had any problems, you should be fine.

Not necessarily. In general they have stiffer springs, but not as a rule, and they have gas shocks. The Islander also came with the "Rubicon" springs and gas shocks. Some Wranglers with the tow package actually have stiffer rated springs than the Rubicon.

Mine's 3 years old with 50,000 miles on it. It got that high because I commute and drive it all over creation. Last night I drove it for an hour with the two Freedom Top panels off at sunset into dark using country roads....just for the hell of it. Smile from ear to ear. Today's trucks drive mostly like cars except for maybe some of the higher load capacity trucks. The jeep drives stiff like a high load capacity truck. A little bouncy but dang, I love it.

^The TJ is a lot smoother riding than my S10, but I do have the HD suspension on it and it's older, but still, her Jeep is like a Caddy compared to my truck.

Ok, ok, my point was that the shocks on Rubi's are nicer than say a Sport or X unless they were upgraded.... In relation to the ? asked by the OP, I still stand by my statement that the Rubi will ride smoother due to the gas shocks than your average X..... But if you wanna pick nits then by all means......

The freedom panels were all the way off? How daring! You are becoming quite the rebel in your old age. Next thing you'll be telling us that you rolled the windows all the way down as well.

I was just mentioning the 2011 Sahara shocks because I don't think many folks are aware of it. But this:

is absolutely true. Those shocks make a big difference. And absent an upgrade, it would also be true for any pre-2011 Sahara.

Welcome!

I have a 22-mile commute each way, some highway, some hills, some heavy LA traffic. My Rubi is my daily driver, and I have no complaints. Mind you it's no sports car, but the ride is fine, and there's nothing sweeter than cruising with the top and doors off on a warm day.

If you buy a Rubi, you're gonna HAVE TO take it offroad. I think it's the law.

Wow! When I posted my question this morning, I wondered if anybody would respond. Y'all are awesome. Thanks for the feedback. Very helpful. I just love your enthusiasm for your jeeps. Trouble is, it's like throwing gasoline on fire.

One more related question...since the Rubicon has the lower gear ratio I assume it will have a lower top speed (not that I hope to do 110 mph) and higher revs at a given speed than a Sport. I plan to go with a 6 speed manual tranny.

This is a great place.

One of the main reasons I like my jeep aside from its trail manners is its ability to tow a trailer up near the load limit for that purpose. All models will do 85 if you like that end of the equation. I had an 08 JKU Sahara that Chrysler bought back from me and replaced it with a 08 JKU Rubicon. There is a difference in torque between the 3.73 gears and the 4.1 gears. My mpg is 2 mph less in the Rubicon on average but it isn't just the gears. It is tires too. I have the stock mud terrain tires. I've enjoyed driving it for three years now. This one is a keeper.

I make a 60 mile round trip commute in mine.
Top and doors off for 3 weeks now, which makes it even better.

Same here, by fuel pump reports. This is a normal value over an American town that is not heavily clogged.

For commuting I suggest a VW diesel or Honda Civic.

I have a JKU Rubi, 6 speed manual. Drive 300-400 miles a week for work and commute. I really like the more "refined" feel of the JKU on the road vs. the TJ that I was driving before that. The longer wheelbase definitely helps.

Before the lift and tires were added, I was getting 18 mpg with the stock Rubi wheels and tires.

Hello!

Hi everyone! I have been reading for awhile and just got my first wrangler yesterday! 2011 Wrangler Sport Unlimited. I thought I would make my first post on this thread because I am enjoying reading about everyone using their Wranglers for their daily commutes. I traded in a Rav4 Limited so the Wrangler is a very different ride. I thought maybe I got in over my head, at first, but after driving it down to the shore today I am quickly adjusting to the truck feel it has. I am a petite 5 foot, 115 lb woman so I was a little overwhelmed by it all yesterday. I think I am well on my way to loving it though. A long highway trip helped! Reading about everyone driving theirs daily so much helps, too!

Love this forum!
