Rubicon as Daily Driver

I've been lurking here for a few weeks and am getting ready give up my Titan and to pull the trigger on my first Jeep. Up to tonight I was set on an Unlimited Rubicon, while at the dealer they tried to suggest a Sahara instead of the Rubicon and I started to doubt my decision. My wants were Billet ext, Black/Dark Saddle Cloth, Dual Top, Connectivity, Heated seats and Auto Climate. I wanted a Rubicon since they first came out, it just wasn't practical until now. Also, I don't do a whole lot of off-roading now, but I hope to get into it and try to get the kids into it also. I plan on keeping this Jeep for a long time, so down the road I would add a lift and larger tires, so the Rubicon seemed to make more sense to me.

A little background on myself and situation. I have two children 4 and 1.5. Both love riding our ATV's with me, so I'm hoping they're going to love the Jeep as much. Now, the Jeep will be my daily driver. I go 6 miles to work one way, on backroads here in PA. Down hill to work and uphill coming home. I avoid traveling the interstate when possible, I like the scenic routes more and less traffic.

The dealer was saying that since the Rubicon has lockers it will lead to more wear when using it for longer trips. Also that the ride will be worse and more overall wear and tear (tires, etc). I test drove a Rubi and I didn't notice much of a difference in the ride.

My question is for those who do use their Rubi for a daily driver, do you have any regrets for doing so? Any positives/negatives to doing so. I know ultimately it's my decision but I just wanted some more opinions from the people who actually have the Rubis (the person I was speaking to at the dealership was one of the owners who gladly showed me their Billet Sahara, so they may have been a little biased). Anyhow, thanks for helping me out and hopefully I'll be posting in the Billet Waiting room soon.

If you've always wanted a rubicon and its within your means maybe you should get it. If you would be envious every time you saw a rubicon then you might regret your purchase. That being said a Sahara can still off road just as good as any other vehicle(with the exception of the rubicon). But even still, getting good at off roading can make you perform better in a Sahara than some random guy in a rubicon who doesn't know how to drive off road

As far as the lockers go, that has no affect whatsoever on every day driving. They are selectable electric lockers. That means when you hit the button in 4L it locks them up, but on the street when they aren't activated it'll be just like driving that Sahara with open diffs. Jeeps are great! No matter what you get you will love it

I bought a Sahara and wonder if I'd been better off with the Rubicon. I'd say there's no perfect answer.

rubicon has the best resale, although all wranglers have high resale values. For the price difference, the rubicon has a lot of standard equipment and you get the better transfer case, lockers, and electronic sway bar disconnect. The rubicon has a better stock ride than standard wranglers.

I am in nearly the identical situation you are. 2 boys 4 and 2 years with one on the way and never had a jeep although always wanted one. Never offroad but cant wait to try the whole new world of random offroad situations, mud, sand, woods, trails, etc... I went back and forth on Sahara and Rubicon and so far besides the stock tires I didn't see any significant down sides to the rubicon. Basically I had the means to pay another few grand for a rubicon and I always like to have equipment I won't likely have to upgrade in the future and will have to work hard to overcome its limits. I really like unique models of cars so I was interested in the Moab and 10th Anniversary rubicon and they were nearly identical in price outfitted the same with Moab having rear locker and the rubicon having the Dana 44 up front edisco sways and a front locker, not to mention the other great features of the tenth anniversry.

I have a 2012 Unlimited Rubicon and it is my daily driver. The ride is not harsh at all. Whether the tires wear quicker than the others is a question I can't answer. I have 10,000 miles on mine and plenty of tread left.

I drove all three models of Unlimiteds prior to purchasing my Rubicon. I did not notice a huge difference in ride quality; not enough to make a difference, anyway.

I have no complaints whatsoever about it being a daily driver, other than the gas mileage isn't the best, but we already know this. I love it. I can't say enough good things about it.

Not sure why the dealer thinks there will be additional wear because it has lockers. There's no wear going on if you're not using them, at least not to my knowledge, anyway...

I got my Rubicon (manual) in October last year and used it as my DD. Awesome ride and I still enjoy it everyday!

My 13 JKUR is my daily driver. Only thing that made ride slightly harsh was the tires. I replaced with P285/70R-17 Firestone Destination A/T. Ride is much better now. sold stock tires in 3 hours on craigslist for $500.

I got my Rubicon to use as a DD. I would not have bought any model except a Rubi...mainly because of the availability of the .410 gears. I knew long before I bought it that I was gonna run 35" tires, so those .410s were very important to me. It is a very nice, well equipped, comfortable vehicle and I have absolutely no regrets. If you let a salesman talk you into something that you don't really want, I suspect that you will have regrets. If you can swing it, get what you want.

...And it sounds like you want a Rubicon. Don't settle for something else if you want the Rubicon.

I have a 2013 Rubicon (you can see below what I did for mods) and I look forward to driving it every single day, as well as to occasional offroading like in Moab. You will see that I did replace the stock BFG MTs with SilentArmors because they are better on the highway and in packed snow and ice (wife skis). We have also taken it on a long trip- part freeway, part two lane, part forest road- and it was great. Without the lockers we would have never gotten through the deep snow we encountered on the forest road.

I have never seen anyone who got a Rubicon and regretted it here on this forum, but I have seen those who didn't and regretted it. I think the dealer is just trying to sell you inventory instead of ordering what you want because, like jkjeeper06 said, that's BS he's serving about wear and the lockers. You can't even engage the lockers unless you are in 4WDL (and can't do that except at very low speed).

Bottom line, you are far better off to have what you may need later than just get what you think you need right now. That Rubicon capability is a bargain compared to adding it piecemeal to a Sahara. If this dealer keeps pressuring, I would go elsewhere. Good luck. You are in for some great times in a Jeep!

I had a '11 70th Sahara because I got a really good deal, it was a beautiful jeep. Now I have a '12 Rubicon, would never go back. If u can afford the Rubi then buy it. Ya you will pay for features u may not use often BUT they're the best.

My Rubi is also my DD and it's about 5 to 6 miles on highway / pavement. I wouldn't say the ride is harsh at all - and I did also test drive a Sahara.

Tires and suspension are things you can change on all the models so that really shouldn't be an issue. If you want to do it cheaply from the get go, changing the tire pressure is another option.

The reason I got the Rubi was because I do plan on doing trails and more, and I didn't like the same color flares of the Sahara. When making my choice, I was also deciding between the dual top option, side airbags and remote start... but ultimately the dealer talked me out of them because they had a Jeep on the lot w/o those features. My guess your dealer is just trying to get their existing inventory off the lot and will say anything to do so. If they had a Billet Rubi on the lot with all the options you want that they can sell you for way more, I'm sure they'd be pushing that one instead whether you need it or not.

Benn driving it as a DD for 4-5 months. I am switching back to my 4Runner as a DD since it is quieter, more powerful, better in snow, and I don't want to keep putting the miles on the Rubi (I bought it to explore off pavement). However, the Rubi is certainly fine as a DD. No extra wear due to lockers either.

I was in the same boat, Sahara one day Rubicon the next, could not decide, ordered the Rubicon never had any regrets.

Most people (including myself) who toiled over whether to get the Rubicon are concerned about being able to afford it and/or paying for equipment they will rarely if ever use.

I guess if money isn't an issue and you plan to use the Rubi equipment, buy it.

If the difference in DD ride between a Sport, Sahara, or Rubicon is something you're worried may disappoint you ... you're setting yourself up for disappointment in that respect and hundreds other fine details.

If you want a Rubicon, and you buy a Sahara... Every time you see a Rubicon, you are going to wince and/or kick yourself...that is not what you should feel with a new Jeep...

+1 on this... I love my Rubi, and she does great for a DD. I also think she gets a lot of looks, but I could be kidding myself! If you can afford it, get it. You won't regret it at all. Plus, stock, the rubi is ready to hit most anything.

The last thing you want when you leave a car dealer with a new car is buyers regret. The kind of money you will be spending make sure you get what you want and for the right price so you leave there happy.

If you really want a Rubi, you should get it. Don't spend $35K on something close to what you want, when you could have spent $37K on exactly what you want.

Just be aware of what you are buying and why.

As for re-sale value, if I remember correctly, 2 door Sahara's actually have the best re-sale value of all models.

Had an '11 sahara...gave that up for a '13 rubi. One of the best decisions ever. AND I drive quite a few miles to work everyday.

by the way I too drive my 2013 JKRubicon every day; before my 2013 JKRubicon I had a 2012 JK Unlimited Rubicon which I also drove daily and never had a problem whatsoever. I never regret my decision and I actually love being behind the wheel of a Rubicon every day!
