Rubicon X ordeal

Wanted to get some feedback on an issue. So purchased a 2014 rubicon X on saturday. They dealer said they had located exactly what I wanted and could have it here by Friday. So now today was told the other dealer had sold it and they are having a hard time finding what I want. So as you can imagine I am somewhat upset at the whole deal. Thoughts? Similiar experiences?

Nothing strange or out of the ordinary. If you were the dealer with the JK in question "What would you do?".

I don't know for sure, but I don't believe the dealer with the unit being requested gets anything out of the exchange.

To avoid similar situations run a search on Jeep.com in your area and find the location of the Jeep you want. There is still plenty of availability. If it's not too far, make a day out of it and buy it at the remote dealer. It's a good opportunity to spend some quality time with your new Jeep.

I agree but my point is i was told they could get it. They said they are searching again but having a hard time. However when I search there are numerous rubicon x within 200 miles.

Dealers are basically con-artist, or politicians, they will do anything to get money out of someone else's pocket. First, don't rely on anything they say, second, search for what you want and then go to the dealer with that Jeep on his lot and purchase it directly.

Was there certain features you wanted that dont come standard with the X?

How are you searching? Are those still available?

Dealers want to sell yo a Jeep....they have no reson not to get one.

Hold your breath, stomp your feet, and then get over it. It happens. I'm willing to wager your dealer thought they could deliver it up until the time the other dealer sold it.

The buying dealer simply buys that unit from the dealer that has the desired Jeep at whatever the dealer cost is.

Sometimes you may pay a little more in the destination charge depending on what the original dealer paid to have it shipped.

I guess I was being lazy by dealing with a local dealer. I have done dealer transfer before and it worked out fine. So they are still searching and have given me a brand new Sarah to drive for now. They only thing I said I wouldnt budge on is color(anvil) and i want a manual.

It's not your local dealership's fault that the dealership they were trading or purchasing from backed out. If it's a really difficult combination of options you want, it is very possible they can not locate one near you. Have you thought of ordering one?

As someone already mentioned, the dealer isn't going to back out of a deal that makes him profit. Something else happened to make it not happen. Try again, or order one.

The other part of this is the dealer with the Jeep might have said no to the trade. It might not actually be sold. I refuse to do a trade with a dealer that doesn't have a vehicle I can sell to give back.

An unscroupulous dealer might tell you they can get a certain vehicle in order for you to place an order. They may not actually have an agreement with the other dealer to get the vehicle. When dealers locate a vehicle in the possession of another dealer, they have to work a trade. Perhaps they can trade another similar vehicle, or maybe even another model, if it is desirable. It is at the discretion of both dealers that a trade can be accomplished. Sometimes money might even change hands. If the dealer in possession of the vehicle you want can easily sell the Jeep, why bother going through the hassle of a trade?

Whenever you order a vehicle - no matter if it is coming from the factory or a trade from another dealer, you MUST write in the purchase agreement that your dealer has until a certain date to deliver the vehicle to you. Give them a reasonable date - you and your dealer need to agree on a drop dead date for fulfillment of their obligations. It should be clear in the purchase agreement that if they cannot deliver, you can then walk. (When I write this into the purchase agreement - guess what, they always deliver.) It should be clear that any deposit you made would need to be promptly returned to you (should they not deliver the vehicle by the agreed-to date).

If the dealer does not agree to this, you should take your business elsewhere.

Alot of good feedback thanks. Hopefully I was clear that I purchased the vehicle and put money down. As in my first payment is in June and it had the VIN # of the jeep on the contract. Now isn't it dirty business to sell a vehicle that you do not know for sure you can get. They looked me eye to eye and said we can get it. And when they speak its like no big deal but I think its a huge deal. When I bought my wifes VW tiguan I didnt have to sign anything but the offer letter and get approved for financing. Right now I am being patient and seeing what else they find. Also if they do find one that has other upgrades I didnt want for example NAV should I have to pay the difference?

Shouldn't that have come up in the beginning? Or do these dealer trades take days to figure out?

Last time I did this it was all handled on the dealer network and it took my dealer maybe 10 minutes to hammer out the details and the trade was a done deal. That was a nissan though.

I got mine in a dealer trade. At first they said they couldn't find any that matched what I wanted. They were looking for exactly what I wanted so I told them that was the minimum equipment I wanted and I'd accept more as long as it wasn't crazy like a 730n or the premium sound and leather options. Then I showed them the Jeep that was sitting on another dealer's lot. They called and got it within twenty minutes.

Look yourself on Jeep.com or on Edmunds or Cars.com. Then print it out and tell them to call that dealer or call them yourself to verify its there. Maybe just go get it there. I just wouldn't trust a dealer to do all the leg work or assume anything.

Sounds like they took it a step or two farther than they should have, but the reality is the X has gotten VERY hard to come by. I contacted 4 or 5 dealers about Rubi X's they showed "in inventory" on their websites, and every last one of them was a special order that was already sold. So..... I ended up ordering one and waiting 8 weeks to get exactly what I wanted.

Don't sweat it, they didn't process your payment, so you don't owe squat.

If your purchase agreement listed a specific VIN # and that vehicle is not available, then the contract is invalidated and they owe you a prompt return of your down payment. I would absolutely ask for your money back, and pronto. You do not know what can happen while you twiddle your thumbs. The dealership ownership can change overnight, and their employees come and go. At the very least they have already established to you that their business practices are suspect. I am sorry to be brusk, but you can get left holding the bag pretty easy - all in repayment for being a nice guy. You can certainly be cordial about it and let them know politely that when they secure a suitable vehicle, you can put money down on it again.

Don't settle. It's your money. You can still order a new one to your specs. What do you mean, you "missed the order cutoff"? Did the dealer tell you that? He's full of BS. The dealer is simply trying to clear his inventory. If you haven't signed any paperwork you can ALWAYS get your down payment back. NEVER settle! I would get your money back (promptly!) and walk away from this dealer. You are simply anxious to buy and this is the oldest trick in the book that the dealers use against you. They try to pressure you into something you don't want, but they need to get off the lot. Car buying is a very tedious process that requires patience. In the end, you will be MUCH happier if you slowly navigate through the process instead of rushing through it because you're so excited about getting a new Jeep. Trust me on this one. If you settle for what you don't want, you'll kick yourself every day and twice on Sundays.

Both AriFleet and LeasePlan are reporting it is too late to order the 2014 JK/ JKU, however I would confirm this with Pat at Field's or your local dealership. AriFleet was last updated on 04/16 and states the information could change without notice.

I looked around at other dealers and could find a single X that had what I wanted; basically because 2dr, manual soft tops seem to be going the way of the Dodo.

I found a couple myself and ask my dealer to see about getting them. They had dual tops which I didn't want or need a hard top and the dealer was unwilling to take it off to use on another wrangler and discount the sticker. What I found was that just about every X that I came across were special orders for customers, but there is no way for anyone to know that by doing a self search online. Even my dealer said they could get one, then came back and said they couldn't because when they called the dealer that had it they were told it was sold. But they were encouraged to try to sell it for more than sticker which in and of itself is quite shady.

Anyhow, after 7 weeks and 1 day, I got my X, exactly the way that i wanted it. The moral of the story: never settle. Get what you want even if it means having to wait for it; you'll be glad you did. Waiting almost 2 months was excruciating at times, but I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Update: Dealer is still looking for a Rubicon X. They aren't communicating with me well at all. This morning said we are working on it. I even found 4 and sent them the details.

^, I would contact the bank that is on your finance contract and tell them you have not taken delivery of the vehicle and that the vehicle financed is not in your dealers possession and they will not have that Jeep with that VIN available for you to take delivery. Also call the dealer and tell them that you called the bank and you want your money back.

from an email earlier this month:

The Spring Selling Season is here….Vehicles ordered now will replenish your inventories in time for the summer market. April orders will be built in May/June and arrive at your store in June and July.

· The 2014 build-out schedule begins this month – the April allocation period will be your last chance to order Challengers and Fiats for this model year. Our May allocation run will represent the final period for Grand Cherokee, Journey, Cherokee, Wrangler, Caravan and Town & Country models. Dealers who wait for the final allocation month are almost always short of the hottest selling products we have.

@Pat why would they be jerking me around on this. I am pretty pleased with the deal I got. I really hate the car buying process so I do not want to start from square one. They only thing the dealer has done right is give me a vehicle to drive. Ive called around and there are some out there. Ive been doing leg work for them. I even said I would settle on certain things for example I would take NAV (originally did not want NAV) i said the only thing I cant settle on is color and hardtop and would take automatic if it has 4.10 gear ratio. Next question if they do find one that say is more than what I purchased would I be asking to much to have them eat that difference? Or at least split it with me. Thanks for your professional opinion. I am comparing it to a dealer locate I did last year we did with VW the sales guy was texting me with updates every few hours and We had it within 4 days. Thanks again.

They assumed they could get it. I'd be scared that they already submitted the paperwork to the bank they financed you thru and have already been funded. That's why you need to call the bank and make sure the paperwork has not been processed by them. Last thing you want is 2 payments for only 1 Jeep.

I'd want the same price if it has extra equipment. At this point, you did them the favor already.

We never complete paperwork with the customer until the vehicle we traded for is here and the customer has seen and driven it and gives us the ok to finalize.

wow, 2 things... get a lawyer if you have a loan with a vehicle VIN on it... and no vehicle... and or report the vehicle with VIN # stolen..
Pat has good points about contacting your bank....
cover your ass because no one else will.
I wouldn't trust this dealer and I would also say you blew it when you signed paperwork with out a Jeep in hand...

I've done several dealer trades and never did the dealers want me to do paper work before the vehicle was at thier store... I also had one dealership sale the Jeep out from under my dealership.. which happens. like folks have said..

good luck.
