Rugged Ridge Mesh Grill Insert MOD.

Its not secret that the Rugged Ridge mesh grill doesn't actually fit the JK grill. Nothing that a little engineering couldn't solve but what do you expect for $45.00.

I purchased one a couple of months ago and it was not even close to fitting right, but I figured that the three the left of center seemed to fit ok and the three to the right of center fit ok. If you do it from the center, only the center fits right but the three to each outer does not.

I cut the center insert out and mounted it separately and the the three outer inserts from left and right and mounted them separately. It is a much better fit and actually looks the way it should.

I also trimmed a little bit more for the Mopar hood lock and this is the final product.

1. Rugged Ridge Mesh Grill Insert
2. Dremel cut off wheel
3. Plasti Dip about 5 coats front and back
4. Plastic zip tie downs from Home Depot
5. Plastic zip ties
5. Hysol 2 part epoxy (I used BVM Aeropoxy since I had some (My other hobby - RC Planes))

about 2 hours.

Yea mine too. I used the two steel rods it came with to hold it in place and it fit the grill openings perfectly.
Maybe you got one of a bad batch.

I had ordered these as well an it was a piece. Didn't fit an the bracket that held it to the grill wouldn't allow the hood to close so I trashed mine an went another route

When I ordered it I knew it would be a hit or miss. Some where happy and some where not. For $45.00 it was worth the risk and I figured I could make it work if I trimmed a little hear and there. I love the 3d look and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

I installed this same one last weekend. The fit was OK, but nothing a little bending couldn't fix. After bending the mesh, the brackets worked just fine.

Same here. Bent it to fit and called it good.

Had to make a little room for the screws on top, but other than that ours went on pretty easy. This is what I did to it today, to match our spiderwebshade:

I had to bend mine out straight to make it fit. It was a very tight fit but like you said...it was only $45.

Ah, mine came from Rampage, and adapting it was simple enough. The only challenge came when I had to set the front to the Jeep - and noticed that the nuts for hodling it on top were a bit in the way. Had to make some minor adjustments, but it eventually got where I wanted it to.

It was also a good opportunity to insert those headlight grilles, while the front was off the Jeep. I'm now happy with the way our JKU looks - and the radiators are protected from flying rocks, which can happen in Southern France !

I have the Drake aluminum inserts. Went in perfectly. I had heard Drakes were good, so as for me, I'll confirm it.

I went a different way with my grille mod. I previously had the Rugged Ridge Black Grill Insert Set and used gutter guard from Home Depot. I have some pics of the process here:

Overall, I am very happy with the way it turned out and believe they are much more secure with the way I went about doing it.

$45 sounds like a rip off to me. I bought 30' of plastic mesh gutter guard, zip tie squares and zip ties at Lowe's for $17.38. Cut 13" x 4" strips, mount the double stick squares (3 between bars 1 above, 1 below) and fasten the mesh w/the zip ties. Finally a drop or to of epoxy on each square for added piece of mind. 2 hours total taking grill off, cutting/mounting mesh and re-installing the grill.

I think I got mine (Rugged Ridge) for $40 shipped on ebay. A slight bend, and it fit just fine.

Just ordered the RR $40 grill insert kit. Didn't realize it was RR until after I got the invoice, this is what I get for ordering parts after midnight. I'll let you know how the install goes, should happen in a few days.

Hey sqdnguns,

I have the Rugged Ridge Inserts like you and want to add the mesh just like you did. I see your pics, but can you give me a parts list of what to buy and maybe some tips? Thanks!

This is pretty much exactly what I want to do, except paint it a different color.
So what is the part # or product # of this grill mesh? Every time I google search it I find hundreds of girll inserts that look nothing like it

Is this what I need to buy??

That is the right one...but the price is too high. I was able to get mine for around $50.00 on amazon.
