Rugged Ridge wheels with Duratracs

After looking at thousands of tire and wheel combinations while in Iraq over the last year, I couldn't be happier with the decision to go with the Rugged Ridge wheels and the GY Duratracs (285/70/17) when I picked up the new 2012 JKU.

I cannot say enough about how awesome the Duratracs are. After reading tons of threads on tire size, gearing, lifts, etc....I was confident that the Duratracs were the right tire, but I was still somewhat nervous that I would lose some of the stock ride feel. Just for the record, the ride and feel of the Duratracs is WAY better than the stock tires....

The dealer set the PSI at 32 as I requested based on info from the forum, and it seems about perfect. The ride is smooth and virtually no tire noise until around 70mph, and then only if you listen for it. My 3.73 gears are having no trouble at all with the size and weight, and I have absolutely no rub thanks to the backspacing on the Rugged Ridge wheels (no lift). I haven't done any serious trails yet, so that will be the next test to see if a lift is going to be necessary.

The RR wheels look fantastic, and the tires look aggressive with the inch or so that they stick out due to the wheels.

If you are thinking about tires, the Duratracs and RR wheels are worth the money.

I don't think I've seen those. You can get away with em in NC. Here in WI they'd be crusted with road salt like pier barnacles in less than a month of winter driving.

My wife is from Appleton, we might end up there at some point.....maybe global warming will occur before then and I won't have to worry about road salt....

Lookin mean You should do the stubby front bumper mod to really show the tires off from the front!

I'm in the Appleton area. If this winter's any indication, y'all can pretty much skip the long johns.

Although last year the snow piles were 4 stories high in some of the parking lots, so maybe hold off on that advice...

Small world, we got married at the Medina chapel. I will reference your post if I need supporting evidence to not move back there.....actually, how would I phrase "I can't get my wheels messed up" when its a Jeep? More thought required for that one....

Stubby bumper mod is on my list of things to do.I have a box of parts from quadratec that I still haven't had a chance to install what's one more thing sitting on my work bench.

That stubby looks good, I hadn't really looked at that before. Standby, I am putting more things in the house for sale on ebay to pay for more Jeep stuff....

Outstanding.

That's pretty funny.... I have the same color JKU, and just received my black rugged ridge wheels... I'll be making the final decision on Monday on whether to go with the 285 Duratracs or 295 Coopers. I like the look of the Duratrac better, but since I'm going with a 2.5" lift, I think I need the extra size of the Coopers.

The ride of the Duratracs is just awesome, they far exceeded my expectation. If you are looking for ride quality I don't think you would be disappointed. Anything larger than the 285s would require the lift I think, the pictures don't do justice to how large they look on the vehicle without the lift. At some point I may look for a 2" kit, but for now I am satisfied.....scratch that.....I WAS satisfied until looking at the stubby bumper pictures....can I post household items for sale in this forum? j/k

^ awesome wheel. I too just finally decied on the Rigged ridge wheel, ordered them over the weekend. I hope to get them in a week or sooner. tires are going to be either the Duratrac or Fun Country II (285's )

will post before and after photos after they are installed !

Jedi - thanks for the info here - I am in a 2012 JKUS (after trading in a 2011...) with 3.73ls so your input is a big help for me to decide on which tire to move too.

Do you have Auto or Manual?

I was thinking of trying the same tire on the stock 17" alloys I have (stock suspension), but you mention that the rugged ridge wheel you used has the backspacing, so I'm concerned that may not clear.

Chief,

I have the auto, and am very pleased with it. I have actually been surprised at how quite and smooth it is.

My guess is that the stock alloy wheels are 17x7 or 17x7.5. The RR wheels are 17x9, so it makes a considerable difference (and gives me the slight protruding tire effect). I am not positive, but you will be more likely to run into rubbing issues without that extra spacing. I did end up with slight rubbing of the front driver side tire on the air dam if I reversed on a steep incline. It took about 2 weeks for me to get the contact to happen, so it wasn't something caused by normal driving. Once I figured out what it was I simply sanded about 1/8 inch off the air dam with my Dremel. No rub at all now. I am willing to bet you will have some type of issue just using the stock wheels unless you install spacers with them. KBwolf or Jkeeper10 are two on the forum who seem to be the Jedi Masters....so you might PM them to get a more expert answer.

The 285/70/17 Jedi runs will not work with your stock wheels. It would be okay on the road, height-wise, but would chew on your fenders if you went off-road with it, especially if you disconnected your sway bars.

The width is the bigger problem. It's just under 11.5" wide, as opposed to your stock tire's 10". Your stock rims have 6.25" of backspacing, which is very tight against your Jeep. To run tires the size that Jedi has, you'll need to buy new rims (15's, 16's, 17's...whatever) with a bs of around 4.5" or less.

Now to figgure out if spacers ($200)+285/70/17 is more or less than a 15" or 16" wheel with a tire size which costs less...

Yup, the spacers would work. Spidertrax makes good ones.

I think it might actually end up a dead heat (or close to it) as to whether the 285/17's w/spacers cost more or less than the 285/15's w/15" wheels.

Be aware that the spacers require periodic checking to make sure they're torqued properly. If you rotate your tires regularly, that shouldn't be a problem. But some tire shops don't like spacers (and some states, as well...in VA you won't pass inspection w/spacers, for example).

A little research and a little math should get you where you wanna be.

Thanks for the compliments.

You can't get the RR wheels in any size expect 17. I debated on going to a smaller 16 to save money on the tires, but in the end the look and design of the RR wheels won out. They make them in silver (mine), a chrome type, and black.

If I remember right I paid $189 per wheel from ShopJeepParts. I don't remember if they gave me a military discount, so that might be a factor to consider. Worth the money though!

First off...Welcome back from the sand box...Wheels and tires look awesome...I run the same tire except in a 16...they are awsome.
