My local Jeep dealership is partnered with a Volvo dealer and my parents have bought tons of vehicles from them in the past and is friends with the sales manager. Well I'm looking to buy a wrangler and figured I'd try to see what type of "deal" I could get. I talked to the sales manager who we know that works on the Volvo side and he said he wont sell me a 2 door in good conscience because they are too unstable with the shorter wheelbase. I originally thought I wanted a 2 door mostly because it is cheaper. But I'm now having second thoughts on the drive-ability with 2 door vs Unlimited. I am in college and I drive around Baton Rouge weekly and a 2 hour hwy.(70+ mph) drive about every weekend when I go home. I'm not planning on doing any major mods because I want the willy's wheeler so that wouldn't be a factor in my driving concerns. I actually have not been able to test drive a 2 door yet because I'm waiting for my dealer to have one in stock. I don't need the space of the unlimited and don't really want to shell out the extra $3500, but If I'm spending this much I don't want to make a mistake, So I'm sorta on the fence. Maybe y'all could help with what I should look for/do
This is exactly what I thought, He's sorta a douche. He's My parents "friends", but I'm pretty sure He has screwed them pretty good over the years with their Volvo purchases
I think it is bull when someone says that he doesn't want to sell you a 2DR. Tell him it's either a 2DR or nothing and I am certain he will start singing a different tune!
But on a serious note, you will have to test drive yourself once it comes in. The 2DR is a little bit jumpier than the 4DR for the reason stated but it is by no means a horrid ride. Plenty of Jeepers have a 2DR and love them, swear by them, and would never switch to the 4DR. If you're a single guy like me around college age, the 2DR makes perfect sense because I'm not lugging around a family or tons of equipment. The 2DR handles fine for me on the highway speeds (up to 80mph when Motley Crue is playing.)
Just make sure you do get a few test drives in before you buy and you'll be fine. Remember to ask questions!
Sounds like someone didn't want to order a 2 door and is trying to clear his onsite inventory.
Get what YOU want. Until that salesman hands you a check or pays for your payments, he has no say in the matter. He's there to process the sale, nothing more. Other than being slightly lighter, and having slightly different breakover angles for off roading, they are both the exatact same width and height (based on model). Tell him he either processes the sale or you go to someone else who will. I've even been in a situation where one salesman tried repeatedly to sell me something I didn't want so I walked over to another salesmen two desks over and said, would you like to make a commission and sell me what I'm here to buy?
He doesn't have a "conscience" good, bad or otherwise to make matters worse - He's full of shit.
Get what You want and tell him to mind his Own business (which in essence He is already doing).
P.S. Remind him they stopped making the CJ-5 a few years ago.

THIS is why he's pushing it - not a stability issue. These aren't the '70s CJ that had a propensity to flip. When my wife was buying her CR-V she read somewhere that it actually had a worse "tipping" than my TJ or LJ did.
If the guy is originally a Volvo dealer and is older (in his 60's), MAYBE give him a pass as he might still be thinking of the CJ's that our mom's always warned us about. Otherwise, look for a different dealer.

He does fit those parameters...However I don't think he quoted me a particularly "good" deal. The unlimited he quoted had a msrp of $34,300 and he'd sell it to me for $32,220, according to him $200 above invoice. If I did tread lightly I could get it below invoice.
Wonder if the Sales Manager is looking to purchase a new ski boat, and got stuck on the trailer towing difference between a JK and a JKU?...
In either case, sometimes you just need to get what you want, regardless of others advice.
In the advice corner... I've had great luck emailing the Fleet-Internet saleperson at multiple dealerships, explaining that I'm sending out emails to my 3 favorite dealers, and letting them know exactly what I want by model and option codes.
Got the Jeep $2K under invoice this way. No haggling. Walked in, he had the order ready, and all the paper work. 15 minutes later I walked out with the Jeep ordered. When it came in, it took about 30 minutes to see if they could beat the financing I'd setup (they did). I had a total of just over an hour. A lot of that time was B.S-ing with the guys and checking out a really cool Viper in the showroom, while they got all the finance paper together.
Such an easy way to do it.
Hope your deal goes awesome for you too!
Ya never know, His Wife might have run off with a guy that owned a 2dr or his pet hamster "Goliath" got killed in an unfortunate 2dr Jeep accident when he was young.
People think strange stuff when they've been traumatized.
I find it hard to believe a Jeep can be had for $2,000 Under Invoice. I believe holdback is about 3%, that would mean the dealer is selling the vehicle AND losing $$

Get the 2 door! I drive 100 miles every day up canyon roads that are extremely windy and I deal with a ton of 18 wheelers. Driving by them creates a nice wind effect when your top and doors are off. In any case - I don't regret it one bit and feel totally safe in my 2 door. I don't care what they say I don't think the 4 door gets as good mileage and a manual is even better if you use the skinny pedal properly. Before I did a bunch of mods I was getting 23 mpg in my 2 door going up and down those steep roads.
I didn't deal with the "4 door" situation. Mine was I wanted a manual and they didn't have any on their lots so they were insisting I get an auto. I walked away from one dealership after seeing him on 2 separate occasions due to his attitude that I MUST buy an auto.
I have owned three two doors over the last 15 years. The two Tjs had shorter axles by a bit and they felt a bit wobbly at times. The new Jks are wider and feel a hell of alot more stable. I have a performance leveling kit and some Rancho shocks and took a corner at 40 trying to hit a light. No body roll, tire squeal nothing. Having sold cars for a while, this is the classic sales commission increase trick. Absolutely nothing wrong with a two door jk.
What they said. I think if he just wanted you to try a 4dr to see the difference between the models, that would be one thing. But for someone who **sells** this product for a living to disparage one model in that manner, that's just a B.S. job he's giving you.
We love our 4dr hard top, when riding in the back it's got a *great* smooth ride because of the longer wheelbase. But we travel a *lot* so highway comfort, and room to pack for camping was important to us. And we seriously kick-ass off road too!
Trying to get into the back seat of a 2 door is almost impossible. I just finally took the backseat out after owning my JK for 1 year because nobody ever used it and I wanted more cargo room.
For those that use the back seat a 4 door is a must! I have seen a number of 4 doors crawling over the rocks here in Utah - I was really impressed.
Forget the stability issue. That's an urban legend. I have a 2dr. However, if you think you're going to need more room for pasengers and cargo, and if you think you'll need up to a 3,500 lb. towing capacity, then get a 4dr. A 2 dr. is great if you're not going to be transporting more than 2 people on a regular basis.
I dunno if I would call it an urban legend. The short wheel base definitely gets a tiny bit squirrely in the right conditions but that's half the fun plus the stability control keeps it tracking just fine anyway. I used to call my tj the 3500lb miata (almost the same wheelbase and no traction controls whatsoever lol).
I am a Salesman for a Ford dealership here in VA. What is going on is that there is most likely a bonus and or better commission for the salesman to sell you a 4door. Buy what you want. I have a 2014JKUR and my dad has a 2015 JKHR. Only buy the 4 door if you plan on taking people with you alot or plan on taking alot of cargo, If not then get the 2 door. I wanted a 2 door but with my girlfriend having a little girl and what not the 4 door was more practical for me.
The ride of the 4 door (especially when lifted) is more stable than the 2-door. Lifted or stock, the 4-door can handle rough washboard roads and steep trails much better. I had a new 2012 JKR stock for 10K then after another 10K, I bought a 4-door and swapped most of the parts over to the 2014 JKUR. My girl did not like the ride of the 2-door much but much prefers the ride of the 4 door.
That said, get what you truly want. Drive them both and see if you can live with the lack of space in the 2-door. The advantage of the 2-door-very nice and nimble on really tight trails and kinda fun to go around stuff (almost toy-like) where the 4 door takes more effort due to the longer wheelbase. I could not live with the 2-door as my only Jeep...I'd get one as a second Jeep.
It happens! When I went to buy my JK there were less than 8 total on 3 different dealership lots and none of them were manuals. 2 of them were Rubicons and I didn't want to spend that much money. I ended up getting one that the dealer had previously ordered and was shipping from the factory within 3 days.
Just depends on the time of year, etc. but it seems like there is either an abundance of them or not enough.
I could have gotten a 4 door Sahara ALL day long but I didn't want all of those bells and whistles (more stuff to break) and I did not want a 4 door.
as many others stated, get what you want. With that said, I've owned 2 door jeeps in the past and bought my first unlimited in 2010. Recently traded it in for a 2015 unlimited and have no desire to get another 2 dr again. However, I am older and my tastes have changed. When I was younger, a 2dr was fun. Now, I enjoy and need the extra space.
Regardless, get what you want. You are paying the bills, not us and definitely not the salesman
Guys, the post (#27) I was referencing did not say 2% below invoice, He said "$2,000 below invoice".
I have no doubt a decent deal of 2% below invoice is feasible but last I checked our Jeeps do not cost $100,000
walk past the salesman/salesfloor. walk to the back, near the finance guy's office.
find the FLEET SALES office/salesman... tell him what you want, he will give you the best price available...
but, i urge you to make sure you know what you want... take a test drive... drive it like you own it... if you say you drive 70mph on the freeway, then take the test drive on the freeway at 70....it will handle differently then a 4dr...
I say stick to your guns and buy what you want. Sounds like an old bait a switch tactics to me. I would just put the pressure on the salesman its a 2 door or I go some where else to get the 2 door.
