Satellite Radio...renew or not?

I'm halfway through my free subscription.
Satellite has been moderately entertaining.
51, 53, 70, 81, 102, 103 and 114 are my usual go-to channels if Im listening to SAT.

But realisticly I'd say that 50% of the time, I just prefer quiet.
30% SAT
10% FM
10% iPhone (tunes or Pandora)

Just trying to figure out if its worth the additional fee to keep SAT. I got along fine before I had it. Nice to have it when I want it.

What does it cost to renew?

What decision did yall make?

Looks like about $14.50/month, or I assume they have a yearly rate.

You can easily talk them into about 70 a year. My last offer from them was 25 every 6 months. Depends on what it's worth to you. For me based on my usage rate and channels I listen to, I figure about 5-7 a month. Don't ask me how u came up with that but I'll just say that's what it's worth to me

I like the music but the reception is bad in my area with Sirius, I have XM on my other two cars and it is much better. Doubt I will renew.

I've only had my Jeep for about a month and it isn't my DD but I will definetly renew. I think it's worth it for sure and i really only listen to 1 or 2 stations on SAT. Every since the wife got it in her rav4 a couple years ago i have really enjoyed it.

I think I'll probably renew if I can get them around $50-70 for the year. Since going with a stubby antenna I get crap for radio stations, but I also have unlimited data on my phone so I can stream whatever I want. So to me it's not worth more than that. We'll see...

How does one go about getting them to drop the price so much? Multiple calls until one says yes, or what? Mine ends Friday.

I wouldn't. Music quality is awful. Sounds like its streaming at 96kbps.

I have renewed several times already. Whatever price they give you just say "is there anything better"? They will put you on hold for a few seconds and come back with a better offer. I did this several times till I got them to $60 for one year if paid all at once. DEAL. It's worth the $5 a month to me even though I listen to the ipod 80% of the time.

I love it, and will never give up Sirius. I'm a news radio junkie, and a Little Steven's Underground Garage fan, and I spend lots of time up in the Sierra Nevada's where there is zero radio reception. My hard drive tunes satisfy me for the most part, but I when I "need" some news or talk, I've got it.

I love it in my car, but I have Sirius. I'll end up paying extra for XM so that I can still listen to things like Opie and Anthony. I travel a lot, and so it is really nice to have a radio in my car that I can listen to and know the stations where ever I go.

Of course, I'm also a PC gamer, so I don't generally balk at $15/mo for entertainment. I have multiple subscriptions to things anyway.

I'm like 50/50 at the moment. 3 months in. Depends on what rate I get when it comes time to renew. Between the radio, iPod, and pandora...I technically don't NEED it.

I had XM for about 6 years, on a Pioneer Inno when they were a new thing. In my rural location, it was an improvement, but the price kept increasing and when they merged with Sirius it was not beneficial to my tastes.

They did a couple billing tricks that were not only objectionable but illegal, requiring changing my card number finally to resolve the issue.

I got my Jeep with OEM satellite ready, but since I fired the company did not activate it.

Granted there are some good things about the technology.

Mostly I drive without radio anything, and don't miss XM. And the more music I did listen to, the more dissatisfied I was becoming with the base-line Jeep radio 7-speaker set up. The cost of upgrading is beyond what I want to spend for minimal use anyway.

When my subscription came up, I called them and they worked out a deal. There are several "line ups" that you can get... I went with basic music, which includes the channels you listed,...dumps all the sports and talk. I paid like $55 for the year.
Octane, Lithium, Boneyard, Outlaw country, Lil Stevies and Willies Roadhouse. All you need.

My wife haggled them for like 35 mins....and got EVERY CHANNEL...for an up front $70/yr. She'll be calling for me next time.

It's not advertised, but, if you ask them you can get a lifetime subscription for about $400. My wife bought it and I forget the exact price.

If you have a smart phone you can just stream music that way for free(well not including what your service provider is charging) and of course you can play mp3's off your phone too. I like the sat radio but I don't see how i can justify paying for it.

Very true.
And as indicated above....I do.
When I have service.....which is a vast majority of the time.

I was merely looking for the decision making process for those who have similarly wrestled with the choice of renewing or not.

00% SAT
20% FM (NPR and Sports)
10% AM (Sports)
70% Flash Drive

Not a huge fan of Sirius and never renewed in any of my vehicles.
Don't plan to in the jeep either.

A lot of places I drive, my phone spends more time buffering than playing music. In those places, my satellite radio is still working fine. I don't really use an mp3 player (ipod/phone/otherwise), plus, I don't have the radio shows that i like on my phone. Really depends on what you prefer to listen to while driving.

3 years ago I purchased the Lifetime plan from Sirius. Basically a $400 plan and you never have to renew anything ever. I will have Sirius until they go bankrupt.

The only catch is you can only upgrade the ISN # 3 times ($75 fee each time). When I had my Escape I was doing a lot of traveling in New Hampshire which has zero reception, so it was worth it.

Im not sure if they still offer the Lifetime plan. I transferred the plan to the new HU in the Jeep.

Now if they ever got a full time U2 channel, that would rule.

Wait until trial expires. Don't renew before it does.

Give Sirius about a week, and they'll start begging for your business back.

Got 50% off for the year, which I find reasonable.

Also, make sure to pay by check or money order - that way they can't use your CC 'on file' and auto renew at higher rates.

I do agree the sound quality eats it compared to CD/iPhone/FM - I don't know if that's the 130's fault or Sirius's fault (certainly sounds better when I fire up Sirius to listen online).

Love the classic rock and country stations, never had any issues with reception. I don't get country on my FM as my FM stations in my area have been taken over by spanish speaking stations.

If you do not haggle the price is reduclus and you are paying all these fees. It would be great if it was less than 10 bucks a month but everytime you renew they zing you with costs. And good luck canceling they make you wait. My wife and I will not renew. Its sad but Sirius/XM are a bunch of crooks. People need to stop spending stupid money they don't have, save it and listen to regular radio. If Sirius/XM goes bankrupt its ok with me.

I would not renew. If more people did this the price would go down or they would change their tactics.

I like that they have a blues station on satelite radio. There is nothing that plays that around here, except for one station from 6-9am thursday mornings... Only thing that would make me consider getting it.

I've had Sirius/XM for 6 years now. My price hasn't gone up every year. My major complaint is that with Sirius and XM, despite being the same company, you cannot have both types of radios on one account. Since my Pontiac has Sirius and my man's jeep has XM, we had to start a new account. That also meant we had to cancel part of our subscription at that time. I haven't been a victim of any sort of shady renewals or anything like that.

Also, what makes you think people don't have the money to spend on satellite radio?

My technique for avoiding subscription hanky-panky:

I report my card missing every year and get a new number.

Minor PITA but it beats having any stealth charges sneak in just under the surface and bite me.
