Satisfied with factory gear ratio?

Curious whether folks who could do it over again would get the same gear ratio or would choose a different ratio if they could buy their Jeep new again. Just to keep the number of poll options down I will exclude the 4.10 gearset and just consider 3.73 vs. 3.21.

Would've gotten 3.73 with Max Tow. 3.21s stunk. Re-geared to 4.56 and went to 35s. Was too spendy.

Also if you could post a little about why you voted the way you did, I would personally appreciate it. I think buyers who do their research on this forum may also get some good information.

One thing about axle ratio is that it is fairly expensive to change because you have to do both axles. It is not like a remote start or heated seats that you can just add later for about the same as it would cost to get on a new one.

Isn't this similar to the other gear ratio thread that got locked a couple of days ago? Aside from the personal attacks that it degenerated into it would seem that there is a whole lot of data in that thread to draw some conclusions.

Anyway, I voted "I have 3.21's and would get 3.21's again.". Our 2013 Sahara is my wife's DD. The 3.21 is plenty for her needs, combined with the 3.6L, 285hp engine.

The other thread was constrained to 3.21's. I am glad you are happy with your Jeep, thanks for posting.

I've run 3.73 by preference in pick ups for many decades.

My last pick up, also a Chrysler product, was perfect with 3.73s for my needs.

That it works so well in a Wrangler must be more than a coincidence.

On the other hand, if I were in a position to be looking at changing gear sets due to off roading needs, probably I'd go several numbers lower along with tires/lift package.

The O/D button makes it real workable for my towing and hilly country demands.

Much better questions i82much, non bias, but I think 4.10 should have been included.

FYI - Real world MPG results from all of us on Wranglerforum.com. It's pretty clear there are real world big jumps in gas mileage 4.10 to 3.73 to 3.21 when you review this thread.

2012 Gas Mileage - let's get some real world numbers!

Happy New Year

I've had 3.73's in quite a few vehicles and loved them. They were on my must have list when I bought the Jeep.

Struggling on the 3.21 vs 3.73. Easy choice when it was 50 bucks but 495 makes you think.

So I made a spreadsheet of the stock options. Here is some data at 70mph.

3.21/3.73 manual 16"
2057/2390 rpm

3.21/3.73 manual 17/18"
1877/2182 rpm

3.21/3.73 auto 16"
2142/2489 rpm

3.21/3.73 auto 17/18"
1955/2272 rpm

3.45 2014 grand
1831 rpm

3.07 2011 grand
2027 rpm

3.21/3.73/4.10 jk with theoretical 8 speed
1571/1826/2007 rpm

So, if we take the assumption the 2014 grand is maxed out economy gearing; the 3.21 with the manual and 17/18" stock tires is really pushing it (especially with extra drag). 3.21 sounds good with the manual and auto 16", and okay with the auto 17/18".

Oh, and I have driven every option basically and am leaning toward 3.73 but think I could live with 3.21 on the manual with 17/18".

I voted to get the 3.73 if I bought again. My last Jeep had 4.10 auto and the 3.8. It really sucked on the highway. My new one has 3.21 because that was what was sitting on the dealer lot. I got the limited slip, and would have liked the 3.73, but I went with one that sat on the lot for over 7 months working for a better deal.

My Jeep is fine with 3.21, but I think the 3.73 might have been a small touch better.

On a side note, I just finished a 20 hour drive from KS city to Orlando Fl with a fully loaded Jeep and 2 fullsized 20 somethings. My computer said I almost hit 25 MPG. My old Jeep could barely hit 21. I realize the computers are not perfect, but dang thats a bit of a difference.

BTW I also realize my trip was mostly downhill

Manual transmission? I am in the OP area also. How is 6th on the highway? Considering the 3.21/manual just because it is fairly flat highways for hundreds of miles.

I feel left out. I had 3.21's on my 13 jku (19000 miles in 11 months) and have 4.10s on my 14 jkur (3000 miles in less then 2 months so far) and if I was ordering a new one tomorrow I would go with 4.10's if a rubicon and 3.73 if a sport and at $495 they are still a bargin for me. If jeep would offer 4.56 for $995 I would bite. Sure I would rather have paid less but after having them I would pay more as they are worth it to me.

Yeah I thought about different ways of phrasing the poll but wanted to keep it simple. I voted "I have 3.73's and would get 3.73's again" which is true if I traded my Rubi for a Sport or Sahara, but if I got another Rubi I'd get 4.10's for sure.

If you want to vote whatever is closest to your situation I don't think the forum police are going to show up at your place with a warrant. Hopefully people just vote whatever makes the most sense, post some insightful comments, and some folks will read the thread before buying their next Jeep and make a more informed decision.

I did the best I could to keep it simple, I acknowledge that the poll is not perfect. No poll is perfect. If you have a better poll in mind, by all means post it and I will vote in your poll.

My Rubicon X came with 3.73 and im happy with them. It had everything else I wanted and I did not want to order just for 4.10. I will never go over 33 inch tires and with the 4.1 TC the 3.73's are great for me

I agree. I think it will be flawed unless people are honest with what they really have and only vote if they really have 3.21's or 3.73's. If you get guys with 4.10's voting saying they have 3.73's and would get 3.73's again that will skew the true results. Give us 4.10 guys a vote

I've had my jeep for almost a year. I have a 2012 JK sport that's manual. I've had no issues with 3.21. Having said that, if I knew then the benefits of 3.73 before my purchase, I would had changed over before buying it.

6th is fine on the highway around kansas. After hearing horror stories on here about mountains, I got nervous when I hit the mountains in TN on my trip. I think I down shifted once, but again it seemed like everything was downhill. Will let you know how tough it was on the trip back. : )

I think people get hung up on 6th too much. 6th is an overdrive on a manual, the every day gears are 1-5. 6th ratio is .84 (that's under 1.0), it's simply not meant to pull the vehicle in any but overdrive situations. 6th is one reason I love 3.21. You lose your overdrive when you gear lower.

I have 3.73s with a Dana 44 rear on my 2003 TJ Sport on LT33x12.5R15 tires.

I have 3.73s with a Dana 44 rear on my 2013 JK Sport S on LT285/70R17 tires.

I like this combo for most of what I do. I do not want larger tires. Both get wheeled a decent amount, but also serve as DDs for us. These tires and gears work great for the way we drive, wheel and haul.

Talking Polls are tricky lol and gear low for the right reasons.

What did you expect from your poll on an enthusiast web site? If you put 5.13 as a factory option they'd all be drooling over it on a Rubicon (4.10 is great, but you really want 5.13 would be all you heard).

Polls are tricky to get a set of valid results, and as you can see you are drawing criticism for not including the 4.10 option. I liked your questions, but also realized the flaw and made a comment. But you're such an expert, you think you got it all figured out don't you.

Anyway, I believe I know one of the real issues at hand, everyone is confused about what 3.21 gearing is supposed to be on a manual tranny, it is 1-5 PLUS an overdrive, but they say to themselves 6th is worthless.... The real question should be is 1-5 worthless for all situations where you need to pull the Jeep, and count your blessings for having the deep 6th (.84 ratio) OD.

Sure 6th is nice when you do gear lower because it still lets the Jeep move fast at relatively lower RPM's, but if your are gearing lower to specifically make 6th useful for pulling it's too funny.

Gear low because you want to crawl, tow, or get more utility, not to make 6th a useful gear to pull the Jeep.

Hopefully folks will review this poll, the other poll, and whatever other information is out there and make a good decision for themselves. From what I have seen on this forum, too many folks get the 3.21's and wish they had gone the other way and gotten the 3.21's. Very few get the 3.73's and regret not getting the 3.21's instead.

But hey - most people who have been around Jeeps for awhile already knew that.

Seriously, you can poll about polling questions to get feedback about what it is you are trying to solicit and what people think will be a valid set of results.

I have 3.73 with Max tow and anti-slip. My son has 3.21. I am not sure if it is just my perception or a real world difference, but on street/highway driving, the 3.21 feels more like a car (I did not kill any kittens as I said "like a car" not "is a car"!) where the 3.73 feels more like a truck. We both have the same factory tires for now the GY Wrangler 255/75/17.

If you recall I said something to the effect of;

An educated crew that prefers 3.73 will always be happy they bought 3.73. People who did not educate themselves and purchased 3.21 will want lower gearing as an enthusiast. Your results are 100 percent expected, and with leaving out 4.10 you've just destroyed the validity of your data.

Everyone else is probably ignoring this poll now because of the previous... should have asked the question, "are you ignoring this poll because of the previous 3.21 poll".

This thread should be locked so you can redo it for the real factory offering poll. Seriously.
