Question Saw another Hertz JKU today

08 with 3 part top; gray; auto; etc "Sport X" model; Tires pretty far gone; salesman said he was new and didn't know much about the unit.

"$18,995".....with 78,600 miles on it.

Didn't look too bad inside for way more miles than I ~want~ to buy into at this point.

I'd guess that would represent about 6 years use for me; and definitely don't want a gray one.

Might get serious for similar with ~30000 miles/$14k or is that unrealistic?

ANY ONE with that kind of mileage have wear/tear/upkeep comments?

Don't even think about buying a rental JK. Can you imagine what that's been through?

Why oh why on earth would you EVER consider buying a rental car? ESPECIALLY a jeep that's likely been heavily abused...

Way stupid decision if you ask me.

At least if you buy a used one owner there's a decent chance they took good care of it and may not have even wheeled it, but a rental is pretty much a guarantee it wasn't taken care of and was abused on and off road by many many many different drivers over a long period of time.

This is a recipe for a lemon, bad bad decision.

Good advice, appreciated. Main reason to stop was simply was driving by.

There's TONS of used jeeps in a couple near-by university towns....all the way from stock to highwall mudders with jillions of mods.

I'm using this time to acquaint myself with the general market.

So far I'm drawn to the 08-09-10 models far more than older styles.

Used to lust after a buddies 75 CJ...but that was long ago and my taste has changed a bit.

besides....the 2010 JKU I drove was REALLY an improvement in many ways, at least on the few boulevard & freeway miles.

and I am familiar with the disadvantages of "being flogged like a red headed rental step mule"....to coin a phrase.

Some of the used rigs have incredible mods and way too high asking price.

Even those that look 'well done' raise some question of 'how has it been treated' etc.

Ran across a couple old TKs in the $8k range, clean, straight....way too old for my intent.

In SW Colorado, there are a number of independent Jeep rental companies that have deals in March and April that allow locals to place an order for a Jeep equipped the way they want it, along with color, etc. It's fleet pricing less a big discount for allowing the rental company to rent it out for four months. At the end of the season, the Jeeps are detailed and inspected before turning them over to their rightful owners. These rental Jeeps rarely have more than three or four thousand miles. Quite frankly, rental jeep drivers are scared shitless on the trails and abuse is almost not existent. When I was running the Telluride Rotary 4x4 Tour, participants in the Tour were allowed to due Black Bear in rentals. Otherwise BB was off limits.

I've been in Telluride a bit and those 'jeep trails' there are terrifying!

got a link to any of those rental outfits? I'll google to see what I can find.

Thanks for the tip. 4 months is a LOT different than 78k.

Yes, this is unrealistic for an '08.... You can probably find an '02-'04 with those miles at that price. Wranglers hold their value very well....
