Scheduled maintenance

I received an email saying its been 8 month since my JK has been in for service and it's time to schedule an appt. thing is, it's only 7 months old, purchased new, so unsure of what they want to service. Both the users guide and users manual say 2 year/ 20,000 mile before first service. I did an oil change already and will rotate tires soon. I have 5,000 miles on her. Is it really time for a service?

What does it say in your owners manual as far as what service to perform and when?

When I take my car in for its free oil change they sometimes try to sell me some other maintenance, such as telling me that my trans fluid needs to be changed even though it is still 20,000 miles away from needing it, according to the maintenance schedule in my manual. When I show them the manual they back down.

The dealers have access to the Jeep database so they know when you bought your Jeep and they are fishing for business. After a couple of year some dealers send you a letter they have a buy back program and they are looking for a Jeep just like yours.

You don't have anything to do then besides the rotation. Dealers have their own maintenance schedule they use.they don't really use the factory schedule.some do both. The email might of been set up before you took it in.

If you follow the factory schedule for the normal drive condition. You don't do anything besides oil change& rotation till you are at 80k or more. It's all inspection of everything really till then. I would still recommend changing the diff, transfer,& tranny fluid at 60k though.

The dealer is just fishing for business. Just do the maintenance that is recommended in the manual. An oil change would be the only maintenance that is really needed. Anything else on such a new vehicle would be screwing you over.

You already did the service. Tire rotation would be next. The dealer likes to get you in the door and the up-sell. They're in business to make $.

Don't pay any attention to those other guys. Go into the dealership immediately. Your Jeep needs its 8 month WL (Wallet Lightening).

If you don't do it, you will void your warranty.

What year is your JK? My 2012 says to change the oil at least every 8,000 miles or 6 months, whichever is first. I consider that a "service."

Mine is a 2013 but I guess I never really considered an oil change a service. They send some "coupons" but even the oil change deals are way over priced. Can keep doing that myself. I will wait for the ones referenced in the owners guide.

What do Jeep dealerships normally charge for oil change only?

As long as you have proof of the service being done. Your warranty isn't void. Oil change is a service. But you already had it done. So you don't have to do it again. You could do it every 8k if you want. I do mine every 5k. I'm doing a little experiment right now.

I used the bosch extended oil filter, 2nd time using it. I want to see when the service light will come on in mi beastie. Before, I always used the mopar one & the light would come on just before 3k or just before 5k. The first time I used it I was at 5k & the light didn't come on. I changed it anyways. This time I'm going to go till it comes on. I'm almost at 5k right now.

But anyways, just keep all the records of everything that was done to your jeep. Factory calls for changing the coolant at 80k. 96k change the spark plugs & wires. 120k change the belt & at fluid & filter. Everything before that is a oil change, rotation, air filter, & inspection.

I just had the dealer do mine this week. This was to be my first after the free 2 year maint. ran out. They sent me a "coupon" in the mail for oil/filter inspection for $39.95. I asked the Service Manager when I got there why so high? He said "you need to just by another 2 year maint. agreement". Huh? "Yeah, you gey 2 more years maint. with 4 oil/filter changes with inspection." How much? "$78.95" Well duh, 4 for the price of 2...
So I popped on that, and they used the first of the 4 that day. Got up to settle up, and actual bill was $71.45, with 2 years from that date. I'll take it...........

Just keep a eye on your oil levels and coolant, plus tire pressure, and nothing else is needed.......

These Dealers just try to get you back in, so they can rip you off!
So don't fall for it!

So, I just hit 20,000 miles on my 2013 JKUR. I've had the oil changed and tires rotated at every 5,000 miles (including the 20K mark). Do I need to take it in to the dealership to have them perform the inspections that are listed in the manual to keep from voiding the warranty? So far, I've only taken my Jeep to Discount Tire and Kwik Kar Lube.

You do not need to take it to the dealer, keep you maintenance records and you'll be fine. For more details search wikipedia for magnusson-moss act.

However I believe some of the extended warranties require you to come in for an inspection, I suspect that's something you agree to when singing the contract.

Read the words again. It says do not exceed. It doesn't say wait until. Most people make this mistake. You need to adjust based on your driving habits.
