Seat belt buckle damage

Yesterday I was detailing our 2012 Jeep Unlimited. I was in the back seat when I saw the seat belt buckle on the smaller drop down seat was all chewed up with a nice big sharp piece of plastic sticking out. Luckily it didn't cut into the leather seat face.

It looks like it got stuck between both of the seat backs when we had them down a few weeks ago to bring something home. If you look at the buckle, they have a piece of elastic cord that tries to keep the buckle on the seat bottom when the seats are folded down.

I checked the owner's manual and there is nothing in there warning you about this. I've contacted the dealer to see if this will be covered by the warranty. It's not a real big deal. Just need the two parts of plastic that snap over the seat belt mechanism. Just something to keep in mind when you are dropping the smaller seat back down.

Have a look at your rear buckle and see if it's chewed up too!! Maybe we can have a Class Action Buckle Re-Call!!

This happened to mine early on bc I put the rear seats up and down a lot. They fixed it under warranty. Now I feed the belts cautiously during folding/unfolding the seats to avoid any repeats. Stupid jeep engineers. My Grand Wagoneer, Cherokee Sport, Grand Cherokee Limited, LJ all had flawless seatbelt interaction when folding the seats. Then again the stupid F$!%# engineers and bean counters also removed the rear view mirror lights that all the aforementioned Jeeps had too. The JK is refined but also has done seriously annoying but minor flaws!

We do not take risks to escape life, but to keep life from escaping us.-Unknown

Anyone else broken a seat belt buckle?

Happened to our JKUR a couple of months ago. The retaining bungee for the left rear passenger seat was out of position. It also appeared that folding this seat first caused the buckle to be contacted by the right rear seat as it folded, which pulled the left buckle toward the right rear seat hinge/frame. Corrected the retaining bungee position and now always fold the right rear seat first if both rear seats are to be folded. No problem since these actions were taken.
