Seeking advice from the wizards of Wrangler

Wise Wrangler Veterans,

I'm a long time lurker on this forum and I thought I would finally seek some advice. I have loved jeeps since I was a kid (Huge Jurrasic Park Fan!) as I am nearing 30 the time has finally arrived for me to seriously consider my first Jeep purchase. I always loved the 2 door wrangler and when the 4 door came out I was certain thats the way I would go when the time came. Fast forward 5 to 7 years, however long they've been out, and for some reason I've lost the passion for a 4 door (not that I don't still think they're beasts) and have all but decided on the 2 door. This brings me to the advice portion. For the past 6 months I've been looking at different versions of the Jeep Wrangler and for 3 of those 6 months I have been fixated on the manuel 2 Door Rubicon in Anvil w/ Red Seats. I absolutely love that color combo! I can't get this jeep off my mind, which is a problem seeing as they no longer manufactor that version. I realize the Rubicon X is basically the same thing but, and this is a huge but, it doesn't have the red seats. So do any of you wrangler masters anticipate/know of a version in the near future that will offer red seats? Is it possible to order a version of the Wrangler X with red seats? Lastly, I have a good friend who has owned several jeeps over the years and has questioned me buying a new wrangler, which could cost upwards of $35,000 for the 2dr Wrangler X or used 2dr 10 Anniversary Rubicon (which you can't really find), as opposed to buying a used jeep and moding it. I'll be using this jeep as my daily driver and I have a small high mileage car I'll drive some to keep miles down on my Wrangler. Do the elders of Wrangler feel the improvements made over the last few years to comfort, convenience, and gas mileage justify the high cost? My theory has always been that Wranglers maintain their resale value so well that one may as well purchase a new one, perhaps I am wrong. To anyone who responds, thank you for taking the time to read this novel of a post, and thank you in advance for your wisdom.

Welcome to WF

I think you are out of luck on the red seats. Maybe red seat covers?

Also...buy new. Wrangler's hold their value so well that you will be paying close to new anyway unless you find a smoking deal.

Good luck!

Really?
That is pretty sweet...

I always thought the red leather was awesome. But the question is...(knowing Jeep)...will Anvil be around?

Wow! That's great news, I hope (pat@fieldsauto.com) is right about that, I'll be ready to buy in about 2 months and I thought I would wait until they release the 2015 to see if I could get a little better buy on the 2014's but if the 2015 offers red leather It'll be a done deal. I do hope they maintain the anvil but I think its less of a deal breaker than the red interior. I just wish I had been ready a year ago. I wonder what other proposed changes they'll make to the 2015? I'm sure there's a thread for that. I hope they're not gonna go all fiat on me. : )

^^^agree with katskins, there are several places around here that will do all the seats in whatever you want for about $1000, and considering its about a $1300 dollar option i think you will come out ahead. Most dealers will have it done for you and just roll it into the financeing just like it was factory.
And DO NOT OVERPAY!!! Don't let them tell you that wranglers are so hot that they really cant come off of it (thats what i was told before i joined the forum and really got looking)....

From Websters
: a person who is skilled in magic or who has magical powers
: a sorcerer or magician
: a person who is very good/skilled at something

Simply by replying to my query you have solidified your status as a Wizard as you are clearly very good at helping the wrangler enthusist find his way!

Thanks Gandolf!

Op, as to your question on comfort, convenience, and gas mileage, from a Elder, (old coot like me).

In 2013 they came out with a updated more comfortable front seat. I am 70 years old, but in good health. I use mine as my primary DD, and also to and from our cabin, up on the Rim, in Arizona. It's about a 350 round trip.
Mine is a 2 door Rubicon, with no MODS. My wife and I find it very comfortable to ride in, and drive, both on highway and off!

Now for the second part of your question convenience. My wife is only 5ft2, and finds it somewhat of a challenge to get into, but so far so good. Please keep in mind that ours has not been lifted, but does have the 14/57 springs with the 255 tires, so it does set up higher than most other vehicles. Convenience of hauling, let's say groceries. We have removed the rear seat, so the hauling capacity is fine for what we need for space.

Gas mileage. When we go up to our cabin, it is a very mountainous drive. We also use it up there for driving locally, and then back in the wooded area's. We average 20 to 21 mpg. Not great, but o.k., for a rather heavy, lack of aerodynamics vehicle.

Good Luck on your Purchase!!!!!!!!

Thank you very much for your reply, I'm actually about 6'4 and my wife is around 5'7 so gettting into it shouldn't be a problem, I will be doing alot of highway driving as well, to & from work and such. I'm glad to hear you're getting around 20 on a hard drive from a factory model. I will probably end up getting the Rubicon X as it's already got a few hard core extras from the factory and I won't intially do much modding. I'm quite excited to learn that they'll be bringing back the red interior for 2015 and cant wait till they release so I can join the Jeep family.

I am not a wrangler vet and have only had my 2DR for 6 months, but wanted to throw this at you as something to consider.

If you think you are going to mod your jeep at all, I would look at the less expensive Sports and make it your own. If you do not want to do the mods, go with what you are looking for.

I bought mine with some upgrades I am not replacing and I am kicking myself in the butt, but hopefully the black Rubicon wheels will sell.

I probably won't do many mods which is why I'm leaning toward the X, it seems pretty capable from the factory and has some of the conveniences I'd like in a daily driver. BTW if thats your Jeep in the profile it looks raw!

Not sure where your located Rowen but if red leather seats are what you want you have some options.
A competent upholstery shop can recover your seats with red leather center panels and matching vinyl surrounds.

Another option is aftermarket seats from any number of seat manufacturers.

Recaro and Sparco are both well known brands and make direct fit brackets for the Jeep JK.

If your significant other is vertically challenged you may want to avoid the high seat bolsters and opt for something a little more flat to ease entry and exit of your new ride.

Yup, that is factory there and thanks! I should have picks up Monday evening after the lift (3in and 35's) is done. I am hoping I will have my bumpers/trail doors on by then too!

Thats definitely an option, my plan right now os to monitor the news on the 2015 in hope that it comes with a Anvil/Red Seat option in the X. If that doesnt happen I'll likely do the 14 X and go for the re-upholster. I hate to do that seeing as I'd be paying for leather in the X version and then paying for them to cut it off and refinish but I suppose if thats what it takes. Fingers crossed for red interior in 2015 : ) Does anyone know when the new models are typically annouced?

Well they don't cut it off, they just remove the old covers and install new red leather covers. You probably can sell the old covers too for a good price.

New models, typically July through Sept. It varies some, year to year.

Yes, color is one of the most important items. After all, that is the first thing that we see when looking at it externally, and internally. Anvil/Red should be assume!

Mine is Black, on Black, which has always been my favorite choice!!!!!!!

I have a JKU in Anvil and bought red seat covers at Quadratech. I'm sure red leather would look better but most everyone I know with a jeep buys seat covers and floor mats as one of their first "mods". If it's going to get covered up with a seat cover anyway why pay extra? Just get red seat covers. You'd be surprised at the quality of the covers. Mine look factory, they aren't the cheap "Walmart one size sort of fits all but not really covers" you may be thinking of.

Oh, and in the interest of full disclosure I'm not a wizard. I'm only a second level thief/illusionist.

Thats a good trick, and I hadn't thought to ask how well the leather on the more recent model wranglers holds up. I own an 03 Dodge Ram 4x4 that I've babied since buying it new and regardless of care (garage kept btw) the dash cracked to pieces due to poor quality materials. So I should probably be asking how well the leather holds up to being constantly exposed to sun, wind, occasional rain ect. Oh perhaps I shouldn't call it a trick, so much as an Illusion, we all know a trick is something a whore does for money

Awesome thanks so much for the info! I'll be monitoring for any information about the new model. Most people seem most interested in the diesel but I'd be happier if they just improved the mileage of the current gas engine : )

Side note for your questions about NEW vs USED purchase, someone above was right on when they said might as well buy new. I bought a made for me brand new 2012 Unlimited Sahara in August 2011, think I ended up getting it out the door for right around $31,000. Fast forward two and a half years to last month, and I traded that JKU in for my new one. Within a week my buddy at the dealership said they had sold my old one for almost $29,000. There has been a base price increase since 2011 so I'm sure that helped my trade in price, but still only two thousand dollars price difference between first sell and second sell for the dealership. I highly recommend buying new, for one thing its more fun to put every mile on a new Jeep, and you can get personal with it at your speed. No surprises from past owners mods or mishaps. Just my $.02

Dealerjoe has a good point. That's why I bought new. For what the were asking for a used 2 year old jeep, for another $1,500 I could buy a brand new one. I just passed a dealer lot yesterday they had a 2000 jeep for $8,000. It was basically stock accept for an aftermarket bumper. $8,000??? It's 14 years old!

+1 -- The reason I just ordered new is after negotiated discount, my cost was about 800 more than they were asking for a '12 with 35,000 miles. Now askin' ain't gettin', but still, the delta was just too low to make any sense to me.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Also I'm not sure how comfortable I would be buying a used wrangler knowing what they're typically used for...Off roading and such, not that there is anything wrong with buying used but you never know. Plus I'd like to put every single mile on mine

if you don't mind me asking what kind of flexibility did they give you from sticker price? I had a dealer tell me once that wrangler resale is so good you can almost drive them off the lot, and trade them in the next week without loosing a dime....that doesn't exactly inspire great confidence for the haggling process.

that's a sweet looking jeep, I don't know why but I love the red on that blueish anvil color....maybe it's because I really like the jurrasic park jeeps when I was a kid and they featured a lot of red. The exact combo I'm hoping I can get when the 2015's release is this

$4000 off MSRP. 2014 Willys, ordered. Inked it last Saturday. This dealer does add a mandatory $599 Prep charge to every sale (in GA if you've ever charged it, you have to charge it 100% of the time), so it cut the actual discount to $3400. MSRP was $28,480.

Mind you, this was after working hard on it all week last week. Did all negotiating by email -- never once talked to anyone till I had a written agreement on price. If they get you on the phone they'll yammer and clammer and confuse the issue and sales talk you. I didn't have time to do that with the 6 dealers I contacted with an RFQ.
