Sell 4 dr truck to get 4 dr Jeep - Yea or Nay?

I currently have a 2011 Chevy Silverado Z71 4 door truck with 50,000 miles. It has been a really good truck thus far. But the Jeep bug is geeting to me. I found a 2012 4 door Jeep with 15,000 miles that I could get into for the same payment I have now and only add 6 months to the loan duration (26 months left on truck and go to 32 months on the jeep to keep same payment). I am really having a hard time making the decision. So I thought I would get some thoughts/opinions. Here is some background info.

- I am married and have 3 kids
- We do own a small utility trailer
- We do not have any heavy equipment, travel trailer or boats to haul.
- We do have a 2012 Chevy Suburban for long trips and if we were to ever get a travel trailer or boat.
- Typically I don't haul alot of stuff in the bed of my truck. It has a bed cover so I can't haul real tall things anyways.
- Other than an occasional trip that we might take in my truck over the suburban, the only time I have alot of stuff in the bed is during hunting season when I throw alot of my gear in there and leave it since I have the lockable/weatherproof bed cover.

So what say you....sell the truck and get the jeep or keep what I got for now? Biggest hang up for me is extending my loan by 6 months. However, I would be getting a 1 year newer and less miles vehicle.

Thanks.

Can't take doors off a silverado, can't take the top off a silverado.
Just saying, I had a 2500 silverado and other trucks. I love the jeep. I can't seem to find a cure for the jeep bug. There is a lot of room in the 2012 jeep.

I traded in a great 2007 F-150 Lariat, pretty well loaded and I'm very happy I did it. I do have a boat, we're selling our ATVs and trailer and I'm getting small utility trailer, first made sure I could tow everything I needed to. I don't regret the trade at all, in fact I'd say that I enjoy driving again. The F-150 was great, but it's a truck, it was big, poor MPG and overkill 90% of the time. Jeep doesn't get great MPG but better then my truck did and it's 110% more fun to drive.

Just after we bought the Jeep we had 5 of us in, 2 adults and 3 teens - I'm going to modify the rear seat to lean back a bit, but reality is that we don't take my two boys and his GF that often anyway.

You're call but I can say I've been very happy with the trade.

with just 26 months; I would suggest that you wait, scrape, save and plan for the 2015/16 Wrangler. I have a Ford F250 4dr 4x4 when the Jeep bug bit, managed to do above and got the 2010 JK....was worth the wait cause now I have both,,, the fun two door JK and a big truck.

My dad was in the same boat as you. He had a z71 crew cab. He loved it but it was a little too big if you know what I mean. It was too long for our garages and he didnt use the bed as much as he imagined. For skiing, his boots would get cold in the bed which wasnt very comfortable to put them on. Also the dog can't ride in the bed as it didnt have a cap. He ended up trading for a 2014 grand Cherokee(I couldn't convince him of diesel). He doesn't regret it at all. Like you he has a utility trailer and I gave him an extra hitch cargo basket I had.

I'd test drive the wrangler. If you like it you should definitely get it. You can't legally have more fun in any other vehicle. Between taking the doors and top off and taking it in the woods they are a blast to own

You clearly want the wrangler and have thought this out. Just get the wrangler. There will be pro's and con's but you'll enjoy it which is what's important.

Maybe the wrangler won't be a good choice in the long run, maybe you'll need a truck afterall. Who knows? You can deal with that if the time comes. For now, just get the wrangler and smile.

And with a super high resale value it's a pretty safe investment as far as cars go

If you're looking at a 2012 with a Pentastar, you may want to listen for a ticking sound coming from the engine bay.

Update on ticking Pentastar..new head...

Make sure you're getting a good trade-in and price, and they are not constantly talking about the trade difference and payments...tried and true car salesman tricks.

Anyway, if you're offroading, of course. If not, it is a tough call and really depends on you. I assume you have driven it and like it a lot. Many here are fanatical fans. While I like my Jeep, I would not have one if I did not go offroad as much as I do. However, I have a 2-door, and bought it for exploring. The 4-door is more practical and comfortable,

i think you have the decision made in your head but need a rationalization to go for the jeep. Everyone has their needs and desires. It seems like you have everything you "need" but desire the wrangler. Id say go for it, because the JKU will still suffice as far as hauling the kids and possibly hunting equipment. pick up (no pun intended) an older pick up as a beater for hunting season and towing around town.

I traded my 2010 GMC Denali pick up, fully loaded for a 2012 rubicon unlimited and have not regretted it. It is roomy, comfortable and easier to park. Believe it or not, I get almost the same amount of lumber and other building supplies in the back with an extra foot lengthwise. Mattresses are problematic.

i you have a Suburban and a trialer, well then...
go ahead....you know you want to
i have an Avalanche...when i got my Jeep, i kept it. its got 175,000 miles on it but its in perfect condition..the thing was that it's not worth anything to anyone..EXCEPT ME.. if i traded it i woulda got about $5000. no thanks i'll keep it for the bed and the fact thats its a great truck.
If a Jeep were gonna be my ONLY vehicle i might not have got one...or at least not a 2 door.. but with the Avalanche AND my wife's Grand Cherokee Limted in the driveway, i went for it.
I actually bought a 2 door to use as a work vehicle..so 90% of the time it's juts me... i manage site work for a developer...so far its working out really nice.. I LOVE IT

The two reasons to keep the truck would be (1) the bed and (2) the towing capacity. With a Suburban and a utility trailer, there is absolutely no reason to keep the truck.

In fact, with the resale on these Wranglers being so high and the ridiculously low interest rates these days, I would venture to say it is something close to cost-neutral for you to trade your truck in on a Jeep. Really. Do the math, consider resale, interest rates, insurance, gas cost, maintenance, all of it.

I also traded a 2009 F150 super crew. Traded for my 2 door sport. I have only used my utility trailer once in a year and a half. Did not miss or use the bed near as much as I thought. Sure spur of the moment things may require a trip home to get the trailer but that is just more seat time in the Jeep. Win win I think.

Man if it is what you want go for it, I did both for a while, the truck had a bedcover and was never used to haul much and after buying the jeep, it just sat since he jeep is actually fun. Sold it and have not missed it yet in 6 months.

I bet you can get almost the same payment on a brand new 2013. Try another dealer and see what you can do. Have them give you an appraisal on your trade before you try to deal on the Jeep. Then go for the Tread lightly discount or offer them 1 or 2% below invoice. Dont try to deal based on monthly payment.Get the trade in value up front and go from there.
