Service department wants $200 to remove....

...the soft top from my new Wrangler Unlimited. I carry tools and the soft top is in the way. Figured I'd get the service guys to do it, rather than have to remove the hardtop myself. This is my 1st Jeep. Just bought it on Saturday, and pick it up tomorrow.

Is $200 a fair price? How difficult is it to remove the soft top myself?

Super easy with two people. Eight torx screws, disco the wiring for the rear wiper and just lift it off. Shouldnt take more than 5 minutes

Yeah, just get a friend to give a hand. I'd personally say though that it's easier with more people - at least the first time when you're still figuring it out. Once you know what you're dealing with, two people are enough for the job I guess.

One piece of advice I might think of giving is - unscrew the torx screws & dicsonnect the wiper hose & electricals (wiper hose might need a pair of pliers - doing it by hand might be hard). Then open the swing gate and raise the rear window. Then close the swing gate before you remove hard top. Or maybe that might not work with everyone - but for me, I left the swing gate open, and so we ended up bumping into the spare when trying to walk behind the jeep with the hardtop in our hands.

Super easy to do, doesn't even take 30 mins. Two guys, and a drill gun with a torx bit. Done. We the sales guys do it all the time.

Once I was transferred to the service department, the guy I spoke to said it was "pretty difficult". What a joke.

Anybody here deal with DownsviewChrysler on Allen Rd? Getting pretty frustrated already....

Yeah, crazy easy. Do it yourself and find a different dealership to have your jeep serviced. That is nuts.

Just curious. How do you plan on getting the soft top home? I assume the hard top will have to go back on before you leave the dealer, so where will the soft top be if it's not inside the Jeep? Also agree with everyone else that it's maybe 30 minutes with two people to remove the hard top if you take your time.

I've installed and removed the factory softop by myself. I would not pay me even 50bux to do that job.

I'm guessing that would work. I just rigged up the hoist in my garage the morning after bringing it home and did the removal there. Just wanted to make sure you had a plan so that it didn't end up being a wasted effort. Still, $200 is a rip. Pay a buddy in beer or pizza to help you for a few minutes.

Tell them it should be included in dealer prep. I have no idea if it is (according to Jeep), but it definitely should be. It is their choice to ship it to the dealer that way. It should not cost you anything.

It's also worth noting that the owner's manual explicitly states that having both tops installed simultaneously is a no no. So they deliver it to you in a condition that the manfacturer states is not cool. For that reason alone they should be willing to remove it free of charge.

Do it yourself so you know how to put it back on. You are not going to ask the dealer to switch tops are you.

The service guy I spoke with told me that "it was difficult" to remove, and would take a couple hours. That's when he quoted me the $200.

I just called the sales manager back and said "what is this....fleece the newbie day?". Gave him a scolding.

Got the name of the service guy I spoke with. Told the sales manager that I know the service guy lied to me, and we now have an issue.

The sales manager goes on to say that it has nothing to do with him.

Said he's gonna talk to the service manager.

I responded " I'm not sure if this has anything to do with you, but we'll find out."


Then hung up the phone.


Must. Calm. Down.

Absolutely not. Just figured they would remove it as a courtesy. It's freezing here. Was hoping I wouldn't have to remove the hardtop until spring.

I just got a JKU in July with dual tops.

No way for $200 to simply take the soft top out. I got the hard top off easily with my wife and two sons helping, and taking the soft top out is a piece of cake.

Looking back, I would have paid $200 to take the soft top out and put it on because of all the trouble I went through - could not get it to latch in front. (Of course, then I would have no way to get the hard top home, so this is really a moot point.)

Just a thought, but did the service guy know that this is a new delivery (part of delivery prep)? He could have been quoting you the price of an existing owner just wanting them to swap tops because they do not have the means to do it themselves. Usually the service manager only waives the price if the sales manager coordinates things. Again, still think that $200 is a rip, and "difficult" is not the word I'd use to describe the job. More like "cumbersome."

Chris, you're gettin raped. When I bought my JKU, I had to have the hardtop removed to get the softtop out of the trunk (I got the Dual Top option). The dealer charged me between $20-$25 to remove the hardtop so they could remove the softtop, then reinstall the hardtop. This took them about 1/2 hour.

$200 is preposterous. That's nearly 2-2.5 hours of labor they're charging you for something that should take no more than 30 minutes with three other people.

Right on! Brand new vehicle. All my local dealers jump through hoops for business and keeping customers happy. Plus the chance for referrals. I'm sure if I asked for it mine would provide a no charge tutorial on how to handle the tops. After all this is no typical vehicle with not so obvious features for a 1st time owner.

Also, removing my soft top alone taking my time having not done it before took maybe 15 minutes including the time it took to schlep it into storage.
