Shifting between different gears

SO in my last car, which wasn't a jeep I used to shift from 3rd to 5th all the time and I blew my transmission that way. I was told by a mechanic that I need to use all the gears all the time, but that was a foreign car. Does it matter in a Jeep if I shift from 4th to 6th or 3rd to 5th? Will it hurt the transmission? Anyone know?

You can only skip gears if you are downshifting, and i honestly wouldnt recommend that, its not only bad for your gear synchros, but also puts insane ammounts of strain on your engine.

There are very few vehicles that can be defined as "made for offroad". Unfortunately, the Wrangler can definitely be defined as "made for offroad" by its inability to handle well on road

Why would you want to skip gears? I know you can do it in a Transport truck if your really careful, but why would you want or have to do it in something as light as a Jeep?

I have driven manuals for almost 20 years. I sometimes switch in between 3rd to fifth if I was gunning it onto a highway and around 45 50 mph then iu want to cruise I will go straight from 3rd to 5th. Dont do it all the time but it is usualy in that situation and i have never blown up gears, but that is just me.

Found this on another thread...


There is no problem skipping gears as long as you rev match. When I'm on a road course and I am heel and toe downshifting you can save time in the braking zone by skipping gears. I downshift from 5th or 4th to 2nd at the hairpin. Studies have shown that when heel and toe downshifting most professional drivers will lift on the brake pedal pressure sligthly on each downshift extending the braking zone unnecessarily. If you wait till the same spot and drive speed that you normally downshift into 2nd and do it at the same place and speed, it doesn't matter whether you are coming from 5th or 3rd into 2nd as long as you rev match carefully which of course is the whole point of heel and toe downshifting. I don't think my passengers would even notice but my lap times will.

Rev matching is the key here. There is no difference is skipping a gear on a 6 speed transmission (6 to 4) or not skipping a gear on a 4 speed transmission (4 to 3).

There is no problem skipping on the upshift either. If I squirt the car up to 40mph quickly in 1st gear but then want to level off at 40mph because of a speed limit or traffic conditions there is absolutely no reason not to put the car into 5th gear and avoid having to run through 2,3,4, and 5th to get there.

Exactly. I did this with some frequency in my last car and never had a problem in over 100k miles.

The Wrangler, not so much -- just because you're still barely moving when it's time to shift out of first.

On some cars you can do that, are even forced to. For instance was playin in a friend's new vette and if you weren't hammering on the gas, the car would block gear to force you to skip gears on the upshift, but when you got on it all gears were opened up. I don't know of all the manuals are like that in them, but I found it interesting, if a bit of a pain, but supposedly it helps mpgs

I agree, but it goes to an example and is a given that not all vehicles are geared to do such. A turbo cummins or vette, no biggy, a jeep negative. A vehicle by vehicle basis on if it is acceptable practice

Thanks for all the info....I think I am going to just shift through the gears...she's my baby and I don't want to hurt her I have also been driving stick for 15 years and the last car I had I blew 4th gear because i never used it, I shifted from 3rd to 5th ALL the time. I don't want to do that to my new jeep.
And btw, having an automatic is not my idea of a good time

Are you sure that you know how to drive a manual properly. I learned to drive stick on my first car while pulling it out of the car dealership, and i never ruined a gear? Gears are not like 4wd, you wont lose it if you dont use it, otherwise lots of wrangler owners would be screwed for not using 6th gear.

uh...yeah! There's no doubt. Thats what the mechanic at the Honda dealership told me about my civic's transmission and why I blew it....maybe he was wrong because my dad is a grease monkey and he said he has never heard of that happening either. Who knows...the second person that posted in here also said that its not good for a car to skip gears....who knows who is really right?

My dad always said, "while you are listening to what someone is telling you, you should also be thinking WHY, they are telling you this. It's quite possible they are trying to get out of something, that they are responsible for" Not saying they were trying to take advantage of you, but it has happened. On my Denali XL there had been a pinhole poked in the fuel tank. I spoke with a mechanic and he said he had heard that when a recall was done on the vehicle he heard if the tank was not taken out properly it could cause a pinhole puncture. So when I spoke with the service manager and informed him about conversation he asked did I have a record of the recall work done. Well I told him that I bought the vehicle from the previous owner and the work had been done in another state. Well as soon as I said that, it was over. He said well since you didn't own the vehicle and we didn't do the work your only recourse is to buy another fuel tank. Cost me $1000 because the tanks are not metal but plastic. Had I had documentation of the recall being done they probably would have covered it, but he started talking real fast to get out of responsibility. No harm no foul, but if they can get out of covering something, they will. Period.

The car wasn't under warranty anymore...and I had my buddy do the work in his shop to replace my transmission. I spoke to a mechanic after the fact and he told me that Hondas are built to use every gear all the time and not using a gear can ruin your transmission. He wasn't the one fixing my car but I was questioning why it happened after I had it fixed. That sucks about your gas tank...I agree that people in the car business try to screw people over specially women when they think they don't know what they are talking about. It's good to have good friends that are mechanics

Well, I'm certainly not going to out-of-hand disagree with a mechanic on the minutiae of Honda transmissions and their operation. I will admit, though, that the idea that you could ruin your transmission by shifting high on 3rd directly into 5th is a baffling one to me.

Whatever the reasoning is though, I don't think you'd really even have to think about that too much with the Wrangler. It's not like an S2000, where I could easily see shifting at 8000 rpm in third gear and leveling off directly into fifth as you reach your cruising speed. I did that (well, not at 8k rpm lol) in my Eclipse all the time. But the Wrangler feels to me like it needs every previous gear in order to get comfortably into the next one without bogging.
