Shifting the transfer case????? Problem?

I just bought a 2013 Rubicon and the owners manuel is terrible. The first time I shifted the transfer case from 4L to 4H, following the instructions of rolling at about 3mph with the clutch in, there was a terrible gear noise and a clunk. Is this normal? Also, is it Ok to shift from 4L to 4H and vice versa with the vehicle stopped? It does not mention this in the manuel or video.

From your post, I take it that you have a 6 spd manual tranny. If so, try this--- stop the vehicle and pit the tranny in neutral and engage the clutch---then, with the tranny turning in neutral, in one smooth motion, move the TC lever to 4h. NOW you can feel the way you have to manipulate the lever around the detent to get from 4H to 4L. Again, one smooth motion, move lever from 4H to 4L. Once you get the feel of it, you can shift this way from 2H to 4L. And once things get "broke in" it will shift a lot smoother. If you have an auto. try doing the same thing with the vehicle stopped and the tranny in N.
Above all, do NOT try to force the lever, or you will probably break the plastic bushings on the ends of the cable linkage and have to replace them.

That's because the gears weren't lined up. Mine also did that the first time I put my transfer case in 4L.

1. Depress the clutch and put the vehicle in Neutral

2. Keep the clutch depressed and shift the TRANSFER CASE from 2H to 4H with one good, firm motion. Make sure this goes smoothly.

The transfer case has sort of a "zig-zag" when going from 4H to 4L. This is probably where you're getting "caught up" and winding up with some grinding noises. IMO, just completely STOP the vehicle instead of rolling.

1. Depress the clutch and put the vehicle in Neutral

2. Keep the clutch depressed and shift the TRANSFER CASE from 4H to 4L. It WILL work smoothly, it's just a matter of "finding" that "zig-zag" pattern. It took a few times for me to get it down.

I wanna say that once a week before I leave my driveway, I will engage the 4H and 4L prior to leaving, just to "line up" the gears or keep things "loose." I'd recommend doing this but I DO NOT turn the steering wheel, especially on dry asphalt.

Stopped works some times. Rolling very slow works all the time. That's why it says it in the manual. 4low is unsynchronized so which is why 1-3 works. Sometimes stopped the gears won't mesh. I find if I roll and the second before the vehicle stops moving, that's the best shift
