As a newbe, I tried a search to answer this, but didn't come up with an answer I needed, so here I am. I installed a Teraflex leveling kit (2" front 1" rear) and a set of 17x9 Black Rhino Mint rims with 32x1250 equivalent Mickey Thompson AZT P3's on them. Of course I notice the weight difference in the tires and rims and was thinking of going with an aftermarket shock more suited to the extra un sprung weight. I'm looking for a near stock street ride but realize the bigger tires need more dampening, so it is what it is. I've heard Fox is the best, but not sure if I need that quality of a shock since I don't really beat the jeep off road much. (not a lot of hills and rocks here in FL.) Is there a quality alternative to Fox that might be a little less expensive but still do the job? Also, do I need to get a longer shock? I am not against spending the extra for the Fox if it's that much better than the rest as I've found it's more cost efective to buy the best than replace a lesser item a couple times. Thanks for any help here...
A lot of people on the forum are running Rancho shocks. Specifically their adjustable shock. That lets you dial in the ride how you like it. As for the length, you can measure the space between your shock mounts at full bump and get the longest shock you can fit. The OE replacements will fit ok with that lift, but something a little longer will give you a bit more down travel.
Look at the Rancho 9000 shocks. You can adjust the dampening of the shock to your preference and Ryan stated. I have had them on my 2013 JKU for 8 months not and I really like them.
Thanks for the replies! I took a ride in a friend's JK that has the Fox 2.0 performance series shocks, and they ride like a luxury car. I'm still going to do a little research on it, but will be replacing them soon. I'll check out the Rancho's.
I settled on Fox performance shocks and installed a set yesterday. Took the wife out last night for a ride through the beach and WOW, what a difference in ride and handling.
