Question Should I bite? 2011 Rubicon

Hey everyone, first post here on the forums.

I've been a long time Jeep fan and am at a point where I can purchase one. This will likely be used for off-roading with my son and may become my DD.

I found a 2011 Rubicon that I can get for $26k (Canadian), taxes included from a reputable dealer. This was a lease return. I've always been told to be weary of leased vehicles and have found it to be true in the past through friends and family.

The Jeep has had 3 incidents. One was $300, another at $1,400, finally one at 7k. No idea what each entailed.

I feel the KM are high at 92k which is how I've talked them down from $29k plus tax, which would be about $33k all in. What sort of work needs to be done to these around the 100k mark?

Inside is reasonable looking. It drives nice and 4wd had no issues I could feel or hear. Tire wear is good with about 2/3 left.

I am a little concerned about the interior smell, smells musty which leads me to think it may have a leak. The roll bar covers have that dusty white look which happens from water residue if that makes sense. There is also a slight whistle when going over about 60km/h from the roof. Seal gone? Speaking of roof it's a freedom top. The jack is also slightly rusty. Engine looks clean.

Undercarriage shows signs of surface rust which seems normal, there is some scratching on the skid plates so I imagine it's seen off-road use. No gouges or noticeable dents.

Advice welcomed.

I'm in no rush to buy and can wait for a good deal. I even considered a 2015.

Thanks!

I would get a 13 or newer for the better motor if you can swing it. I say 13 due to the issues with the heads on the 12s.

Welcome to the Forum!

From reading your post, I think deep down inside you know the answer. About the only positive references are a clean looking engine and the fact that you were able to negotiate the price $3K.

As Trapjaw stated, if you can get a late build '12 or even a '13 you would be much happier with the performance. IMO, it would definitely be worth a slightly higher payment or saving for a larger down payment. Unless you are really going to put the Rubi hardware to use, you can get a newer Sport for the same exact price.

Thanks for the replies. very quick.

Spinlock, I agree with your first sentiment. I passed because I felt it was not worth the possible headaches. I wanted to make sure the experts felt the same way. I'd hate to pass on a great deal.

Trapjaw, I thought the same about the engine.

I almost bought a 2014 Sport last week, ended up needing to refine the order and go with a 2015 Sport S which raised the price due to lack of rebates. I was approved but have yet to take the plunge as the trade in offer on my current car is not what I'd like to get. Private sale or DD is the way to go on that.

If I get new I'll just put what would be my monthly payments into savings and for 7 months or so and get it for my birthday with a good 1/3 paid off right off the bat. Hopefully have some rebates available to sweeten the deal.

In the mean time I'll keep looking for a good used Rubicon in the same price range or slightly higher. 2013 or newer by the looks of it.

Honestly I'd rather a Rubicon, this will be a vehicle for my son and I to 4x4 in, camp, etc. As well as summer use.

I'd hate to get a sport and wish I'd gotten a Rubicon.

The mentioned vehicle doesn't sound very appealing. That "white dust" from the water is most likely mold and that musty odor will never dissipate. As well you mentioned it had 7K in damage? That's fairly significant. I'd keep "looking" for something a bit cleaner all around.

I just bought a '14 Sport S package on Thursday night and there are zero rebates on Wranglers. Hardly ever actually..

I am a member of Chrysler Affiliate Rewards due to my company though. So that helped a lot.

Does the Tread Lightly discount for affiliate pricing work in Canada? That would be the route I would go/went.

Trapjaw, what is Tread Lightly? I briefly saw the .org site and see a 1% discount, is there something more than that? Not sure if it applies in Canada.

xSZYDx, on the Canadian site for BC there is 3500 dollars in savings. Perhaps not rebates, but that's what the dealer called them. I could be mistaken though.

It gets you pricing 1% below invoice. I would call them and see if it works in Canada. It the same affiliate pricing mentioned above. Not as good as employee pricing though.

Good call on the pass, 7k in damage and mild issues with 92k km at 27-29k is definitely a rip off.
If you want a Rubicon you maybe waiting awhile for a used one. My brother and I wear searching for him a few weeks ago and there was only 1 for sale and that was a 500 square km search of us(Toronto). They aren't as popular due to the extra cost for features most won't ever use.
My dealer couldn't even find one I wanted with the options so I ended up building it to order. Couldn't be happier!!! Got exactly what I wanted with out any compromise.

If you truly want a Rubi. Wait till you have the extra funds and build it to order.

I just bought a used 2012 Rubicon in immaculate condition... very loaded and 23K miles for $27K USD and a clean CarFax - other than the trans tube recall still sitting out there, which is now resolved. I guess they had been asking $31K with no takers (I saw the original for-sale sign stuffed in the back seat pocket after I bought it) and just reduced it to $28K and I walked out the door with it for $27K. Not sure what the prior owner did with the OEM wheels/tires because this has 2013 Rubicon wheels on it and new Toyo Open Country tires - which I really like. I drive <10K miles per year and with the engine warranty for this model year being extended to 150K miles/10 years I figured what the heck - the new Pentastar gives my Jeep plenty of pep (I can't hear no stinkin' ticking... I just turn up the radio ).

Anyway, maybe Canada is a much different resale place than the U.S. (I'm near Detroit), but the offer you are faced with does not sound too exciting.

I agree with all of you. Since I've only been researching a month to buy a Wrangler (I've wanted one for nearly 20 years now, probably should have started sooner.) I wanted to make sure you all thought as I did on this particular Rubicon.
