Show me the "POWER" - need some ideas

OK - 2008 Rubicon - Airaid Intake, 34" wheels, 18" rims, 2.5" lift, winch, custom bumpers.

I understand - Jeep is like a brick going down the road. I find it hard to keep this thing at 70. I mean going 70 down the road - windy day - I shifting out of overdrive going up a overpass to maintain 70.

I'm not a foot in the motor kind of driver, but I feel that I must do this to keep my Jeep at 70.

Here is my question - anyone have any good mods that have helped to keep the Jeep "comfortable" at 70?

I know this conversation will probably move to re-gearing, but this is a Rubicon - the whole reason I bought the Rubicon was to have the better gearing.

Has anyone added new exhaust headers - does that help?

I cruise my JKU Rubi at 70/2000rpm and I have BIG Hankooks 33.2" (installed)-

I go out of O/D when near hills or climbing the Sierras and average about 16 mpg when I'm on level freeway (not often)

You don't mention what tranny you've got and evidentally you never read anything in the forums before you modified your JKU-

Mine cruises easy with the auto and passing is no problemo-

4.11's do great with a stock rubi, but add bigger tires and other mods.. and just like any jeep you need to go lower with them.

Really, none of the engines mods make enough difference to justify the cost. The only thing people can get that extra boost from is re-gearing and since you have an automatic the Superchips Flashpaq

The only two things I've seen produce results on here are:

a. engine swap

b. supercharger

Yep, you'll want to get a flashpaq or other good tuner to improve your auto trans shift points. That'll help. Spend some more money to regear now that you've got some bigger tires and you should have as much if not more pull than you did when it was stock.

As for getting a Rubi for the bigger gears, that is one reason, but there are a number of other things you got on your Rubi too. Electronic sway bar disconnect is one and I think it came with electronic lockers too if I'm not mistaken. It's not just the gears.

I've got 4,10 gears and Can't justify the cost/time to regear-and mine is also an auto-and my cruise is fine for the jeep-

Like I said, I don't have any troubles with my bigger tires/lift/auto and I use the AEV Procal Module, you should read the pros/cons on the AEVPM vs the flash pacs and Do some googling, for lots of opinions on both-I'm very happy with mine

Good luck

The Rubicon does just fine in it's stock form, but you have changed the playing field with a lift (more air under the jeep for greater resistance) 34" tires ( greater rolling resistance ), winch & bumpers (heavier load to carry). Everything you have done to your Rubicon has demanded more power. Forget about the intake and exhaust mods. They will sound like more power but will give you very little improvement at best. Those mods are a big waste of money. You have three choices. A supercharger for about $5000 will give you about a 50% increase in performance. 2nd, a hemi conversion will make it into a pretty nice rig, but that will run you mega bucks. The last option is one most of us have gone to. 513 gears with an automatic will put the engine into its power band even better than it was before you did your mods. @ 70 mph you will run about 2550 rpm which is right in the middle of the power band of the 3.8. Add to the gears a Superchip or other programer to correct the shift points and you will have a better performing Rubicon than it was when stock. All for about $1500. It'll be the best $1500 you spend on your Jeep.

So what is a typical cost of re-gearing? I read @1500 above - is that correct? Is that a auto shop doing the work or me doing the work? Do you have to re-gear the front and back or just the transfer case?

most 4x4 shops can do it. you need to re-gear front and rear diffs to match.. No need to touch the t-case.
