The deer population in my town is getting heavy. To avoid running into one (future jerky), I've started driving slowly and carefully to work. Yesterday going through my EVIC, I saw that I was averaging 20 mpg. Today, I tested a trip which got me 26 mpg. It was actually 26.3mpg but it took sometime to get phone out for pictures after parking. I lost 0.3mpg in the process. I have a 6sp manual JKU sport with 3.21 gearing. I take suburban roads for 10 miles at an average speed of 40 mph on a fairly hilly trip.
A lot of the more rabid Jeepers here forget, or never knew, how good the fuel economy can be on a JK set up like yours.
Mine came with the 3.21 gears, six speed manual, two door. I had no problem averaging 20 - 23 mpg on most trips.
Now that I've dropped the gearing to 4.10's, added a fair bit of weight, and heavy lugged 33" tires, I'm pretty happy when I see a mere 16-17 mpg on the same trips...
If you have the same size tank as me you drive close to empty every time Sweet ;-)
I have a stock 2013 JK Sport. 2 miles each way to work in a small city... Yes I'm lazy... And I don't drive much more than that 9 months of the year. Get about16 mpg. But I can go up to 3 weeks between fill ups. Other times I drive across country on freeway. Doing 80 mph getting between 14-17 mpg depending on wind and hills. However, at 55-60 mph highway speeds can get 22-23 mpg.
Sounds like even newer jeeps are getting better mpg overall. Interesting.
Extra comments... Forget to mention this automatic. Also, since I got my jeep exactly two years ago I've also slightly modified my driving habits. Don't accelerate like a race boy. But I like the fact that wrangler has quite a zip to it if you want to. Surprises other drivers I think. Also, I let the brick slow down without using brakes when approaching stop lights and signs. This also annoys drivers behind you.
My, what has become an "addiction" to 23+mpg is what has kept my "Mod Bug" at bay. I drive about 80 miles a day and getting like 435 miles on a tank has me in its grasp.
that's incredible!! My fuel indicator lights up at 300 miles and usually fill up at 320-330. My personal best was 343 miles w/ 33 distance to empty according to the computer.
Almost the exact same commute as me in the same area. with stock tires and 3.73's & automatic, I am averaging 17-18 under these conditions. I can def see 2-3 mpg drop in the cold weather too. I will be back up to 19-20 under the same conditions when its hot out again
This makes me question my MPG on my 2013 Rubicon 10A. It a Auto with 3.73 greats and pretty much stock at the moment. I get 13 mpg max on the expressway at 70mph. Driving 55mph I get about 16mpg.
I always assumed that was just the normal MPG for a Rubicon? No?
Using Fuelly.com, I only got 14.8 mpg.
I just started tracking though, so maybe it'll get better. Wowzers.
2013 JK Sport, manual with 3.21 gears, soft top, 285/70R17 Duratracs on 17" ProComp series 51 wheels. I've even used the Superchips Flashpaq to adjust for the bigger tires.
It's only about 15 miles per day, with a mix of city + highway. I guess I need to pay way more attention to my acceleration!
I have nearly the same set-up but automatic transmission. I'm at 16.1 mixed but around high-14s in town. 16.1 is with is with a couple road trips though to counter my city driving. It's comforting to know someone else is in my shoes.
Absolutely not. That'll have the opposite effect. On modern vehicles, if the engine isn't actively pulling the vehicle, the computer cuts fuel. So when you let off the gas in gear, you're burning little or no gas at all. Put it in neutral, you're idling no matter what's going on...and burning gas.
Maintaining speed is pretty key...use the cruise control. Its the repetitive acceleration that kills a lot of folks' fuel economy.
33"s, Unlimited, 3.73 gears. Auto. heavy front bumper, winch, rocker armor. 2.5" lift. Get about 14 MPG average. Mostly city driving. My work commute is about a mile, lol. Then driving to client sites, evening drives. Rarely go over 40MPH.
I will average 22mpg with the stock 2d 5speed. This is a 2011 with the old engine. I drive it easy and not too hard on it, then I get 22. Bigger tires will drop it down to 20mpg.
Forgot to mention that I have the 3:73 for all that extra power.
2012 JKU 20 mile round trip to work every day..I'm showing 17.2 now.....usually between 30-45 mph driving, stop and go, back roads. Jeep is stock, 3.21 gears bought new.
2014 JKU 3.21 gears, best so far was 13.2 litres per 100 kms, imperial would be about 17.8 miles to the gallon. I am sure it will improve once the weather warms up more. The Wrangler has about 11,000 kms on it now that is about 6,900 miles.
In the deep cold winter we had when I was warming the thing up for 15 minutes every morning I hit an all time low of 11.9. Now I'm back up my about 15.6. I average 30 MPH on my ride to and from work and sometimes even get it into 5th gear. I have 9 traffic lights between my home and work and the drive is 4.5 miles 1 way.
I don't care what the window sticker says, I've never seen that advertised 17 city.
I didn't buy a Jeep for it's mileage though so...... If I wanted mileage I would have gotten something else.
Over the year I have had mine, I've averaged 17.87 MPG, cumulative. Mine is, drivetrain-wise, a stock Sport. The best gas mileage I've ever made, according to the EVIC, was 27 MPG, flat freeway, low winds @ 65 MPH.
I rarely reset my MPG indicator and most of the winter I was averaging about 18.3 or 18.4. For what the wrangler is, and with my tires and but inflict, I'm ok with that.
Right now I'm around 13 overall. 3.8L with 3.73s and 35 inch pro-comp A/T! Depending on my mood it goes down to 12 or up to 15. Driving in a college town doesnt help!
In the Spring time with stock tires and 3.73's I'm getting about 16.5 around town. This past winter mpg plummeted down to 13.5. I'm really gonna hate to see what next winter brings when i have 35's on... But not to worried about mpg didn't get the Jeep for that... :lmao:
I'm getting around 16-18 and that's driving around right outside of DC. 2" lift on 255/75/17
