side air bags

I assume this is a dumb question but want to be sure. I found the Jeep I want almost exactly as I want it except it doesn't have the side air bags. I don't think it's quite a deal breaker but it's close. So I'm wondering if anything has changed in the last couple of years to make it possible to add those after the fact.

If I had to guess, I suppose the only way to properly do it, if at all, would be to swap seats with one that did have them built in. But I assume that would be a huge no-no as far as removing a factory safety feature from the donor Jeep. Any thoughts, or am I out of luck? Thanks!

No idea what it would cost or the part numbers - but the two sources that I can see that wouldn't involve causing problems for some donor would be:

Seats from Jeep that's been totalled + replacement air bags from Mopar.

Replacement seat from Mopar + replacement air bags.

If it didn't come as a factory installed option I would leave it alone. I would think a dealer could add it; order new seats, wiring, sensors, etc., and tie it into the canbus, but it's going to be real expensive.

Side airbags was a big deal for me to have on my 2012 wrangler unlimited. Tough to find on the lot, but with jeeps horrendous side impact safety studies I got them. Might be worth ordering the jeep as you want it. Hopefully I'll never need them but........

Two door or four? They only protect the driver and front passenger. Decided if the accident was bad enough for them to work and my child was in the jeep unprotected, I didn't want to be there to see what happened to her

Side impact rating is NOT 'horrendous'! It's "Marginal" based on a single test on one vehicle. There is no way you can draw ANY conclusion from a sample size of one!

Read the whole narrative on the test. Bunch of "might" and "could" in there.

IIHS-HLDI: Jeep Wrangler 4-door

In "Injury Measures", the JKU gained the highest possible rating in 5 of 6 parameters.

Head protection was downgraded to marginal because there might have been injury in different circumstances....

The test vehicle was a 2008 Unlimited Sahara, so no Rubicon rail or added rock rails to protect the side.

All that said, I got side air bags. Seems they could help in the main weakness noted in the tests and stop front seat passengers heads from hitting the side windows.

I'm curious why IIHS hasn't tested with the side air bags. It can't be because they are optional.

Looking at IIHS crashworthiness details they tested both a 2007 Nissan Pathfinder and a 2007 Nissan Xterra with and without side airbags. In fact, it seems to me if the purpose of IIHS performing these tests is to increase safety and the publication of these test results is to raise consumer awareness of the value of airbags, then testing (and publishing) the same vehicle both with and without (when available from the factory both ways) seems to be the most rational path to take.

Additionally, I'm curious if they 2011 interior changes or the 2013 seat changes will have any impact on the results - since they last tested a 2008 Sahara. In fact, it seems that testing both a Sport and a Rubicon makes the most sense - that a Sahara doesn't test either 'least lateral structure' (that would be the Sport) nor 'most lateral structure' (Rubicon)

In any case, lack of side air bags is why I didn't go with any of the local 2012s and when I placed my order, I got the side air bags. They aren't much when factory ordering compared to the overall cost of the Jeep, and unlike ABS and seatbelts, side airbags don't have any day-to-day impact until they go off.

Do the airbags protect against head injury? When I was looking, I was told that they do not, that you need side curtain airbags to do that. I didn't really look at the issue too closely though. now I'm curious.

For whatever it's worth, my insurance company does not give a discount for having side air bags. Not sure that means much, but apparently my insurance carrier doesn't rate the car as meaningfully safer with them.

I hate to get into discussions about IIHS, but the answer to your question is that IIHS only tests the base model, additional tests, eg:optional side air bags, are done on the manufacturers dime. recall that in 2008 Chrysler was going thru a bankruptcy and reorganization, likely they didn't have the money to spend at the time.
