Silverstars never gave me more than ten to twelve months before burning out. Been using Philips Vision Plus for several years. Have had the same pair for almost three years in my F150, and just put some in my wife's JK.
My 07 Tacoma's factory bulbs lasted 3 years. When 1 burned out I decided to give them a try. Yes, they do put out somewhat more light. But they only lasted about 10 months. I went back to standard bulbs 4 years ago and they are still burning.
The cost/benefit just isn't there for me. I paid 2X as much for a bulb that lasted 1/4 as long with only a slight gain in performance.
For the price, I just didn't get any value out of them considering their short lifespan. One blew at around 6 months and the other two months later. Granted, I had these on a '99 Dodge Ram, so they may have improved the quality of them since then. Never bought them again.
I used to use them. I asked not too long ago on here and people mostly got less than 12 months out of them. For less money and longer life I believe most people on here that replace their halogen bulbs did so with Phillips Xtreme Power 80. That's what I plan on doing when I install my new Cibies.
I have them in my daily driver, and have had them for close to three years. One just burned out about two weeks ago. Guess I got lucky! They did what I needed (I was driving home from work at 1am through rural areas with lots of deer, and they gave me more light and a slightly better spread. I've been happy, BUT I don't know if when I replace them I will get them again due to cost. I just threw the original bulb back in when this one blew as I still had it in the truck.
You'll find some good posts on this if you search around. I remember reading that while they do put out "more" light, it is not "good" light. The color is more harsh making it harder on your eyes to see objects on the road.
Like someone else mentioned, the Philips Xtreme are a highly recommended upgrade for the stock housing and what I use. They have been in the Jeep for a couple years now with no issues and they were a significant improvement over stock. When these go I will probably upgrade the housings to the Cibies or Hella with H4 bulbs.
I'm retired and 65. As discussed , the Wrangler headlights aren't very good. I decided to try the cheapest option first and installed Silverstar Ultras today. Will report back after driving at night. Hopefully when the 2017's come out, I can replace the whole assembly with what they will be using.
OK. Just took my Wrangler out for a night drive. The Silverstar bulbs are much better than factory. My only concern is how long they will last. Right now, very happy.
regardless of which bulb you select don't forget to make sure your headlights are aligned, especially after lifting etc. also, although a pain, fogs are adjustable.
If you plan to keep the vehicle another couple of years or less, silver stars can make sense. Else in the long run they are expensive. I am using them on one vehicle and they are lasting nine months each bulb on average. Make sure to buy them from cheapest source and keep a spare in the glove box. Think of it like a temporary solution like buffing headlight lenses. It does help but does not last.
If you are unhappy with the lighting on a vehicle you plan to keep longer than a couple of years your alternates of going LED may be better in long run.
