Simple Backspacing Question

Looking at 16" Wheels for my 12 JKUS because finding 15" all black aluminum seems impossible.

Most of what I am seeing for 16" Wheels have a BS of 4.25, I know 4.5 is the goal but will that .25 really make a difference?

4.25 will stick out more. The lower the Backspacing the more they will stick out

Discount Tire has many all black 15" alloy wheels. Here's an example, here's another, and here's one more. There are others.

I don't know why you would have trouble finding black alloy 15" wheels. there are a whole lot of good ones to choose from out there. But, if you're worried that the 16" rim, 4.25" backspace wheels will stick out more than 4.5" BS, you don't want 15s. Most of them are 3.65" or 3.75" BS and will stick out even more.....

I think that is why i was having troubles finding 15" wheels was because I couldnt find any that had 4.5 BS. Being a DD I dont think i would want tires sticking out that far. I just dont want to pay 2k for wheels and tires with the 17" option....

I found black pro-comps for like 80 bucks that are 16" but 4.25 BS I think I can deal with that .25 more than i could with a 3 something.

Yeap, I've been looking at the same thing. I want to run 33x10.5x15s, but even with the stock width tire, all the 15" wheels have too much backspacing. By California law, tires can't extend beyond fenders, so I'm going to run the stock 255/75/17s into the ground, and then make a decision. Bummer.

so run a 16x8.5 w 4.5" of BS... with a 285/75 or 305/70 tire you should be fine.

I dont think there is a law in Louisiana because I have seen many Jeeps on post and in the cities that have tires sticking out way far. Maybe all the Mudd Festivals they have here and in Texas its just not that big of a deal. I just dont want mud/water splashing up in my face when I am chilling without my doors on and dont want big old ugly flaps.....

I plan to run on "pizza cutters" because of the type of roads and trails I drive most of the time.

This is a great article that opened my eyes about tire selection. It's totally counter to the knee jerk wider-is-better assumption I used to have:

If you don't want the tire sticking out too far, then 15" wheels aren't for you. They have to have a shallow backspace to properly clear the rotors on the JK. The vast majority of 15" wheels for the JK will have 3.75" of backspacing. Some will have more (Black rock 909 = 4") others will have less (Level 8 Tracker = 3.32").

Too little backspacing, actually.

thinking i will just stick with the pro-comp all black 16x8's with 4.25 BS they are only like $85 so 5 wont be so bad at once....

Now the tires being a 33x12.50R16 that are in stock may be a problem lol.

Finding the ProComp wheels in stock may be a problem too. Many of them are on national backorder with no ETA.

The smaller wheels need the extra backspace. This keeps the wheel out further from the caliper and has a less chance of rubbing. If you notice the a wheel tappers ever so slightly towards the center. So the deeper the wheel sets back over the caliper the more chance it will rub. That why the 15" MB's fit without rubbing the calipers. They have a 3.75 bs for a 8" wide wheel. If they were a 4.5"bs they wouldn't fit
